In this paper, we implement the Z matrix interpolation technique for ultra-wideband (UWB) transient analysis of antennas excited by short pulses. This kind of analysis usually requires a much larger frequency range in comparison with analysis of wideband time-harmonic antennas. Due to stronger variation of currents at low frequencies down to DC, generally more frequency points are needed in the frequency range. In this work, we attempt to find a general rule of thumb for determining the optimal selection of frequencies for analysis of antennas excited by UWB pulses, using MoM with the Z matrix interpolation technique.

High gain horns are used in multi-feed (cluster feed) reflector antennas, producing less spillover loss than conventional horns like dual-mode or corrugated horns. They can also be employed as an antenna element in limited-scan phased arrays, generating high aperture efficiency and good scan performance, and as a feed for quasi-optical amplifier arrays. The most promising high gain horns, high-gain hybrid-mode or "hard" horns and multi-mode horns, are compared with respect to their bandwidth potential. High-gain horns have, in general, considerably lower bandwidth than low-gain horns or "soft" horns. They have decreasing bandwidth and increasing aperture efficiency with increasing aperture diameter and with increasing dielectric constant of the wall material (hard horns). For apertures of about 3/spl lambda/, the hard corrugated horn yields the largest bandwidth, while for 4/spl lambda/ apertures, hard and multi-dielectric horns all exhibit similar bandwidth. The hard horns under study, although they are not optimized, exhibit approximately 50% higher bandwidth than the optimized multi-mode horns. The multi-dielectric horn yields considerably higher aperture efficiency than the other horns. The comparison study is not considered complete because of limited data being available.

In this paper, a physically-based numerical model is proposed to analyze single/double line-fed patch antennas and circuits based on the method of moments (MOM), where the number of unknowns can be significantly reduced using simplified meshes. In the proposed model, two kinds of new basis functions are used to describe the currents on the feedlines and the feedline-patch junctions. The accuracy and efficiency of the improved MOM model are illustrated by numerical results.

In radio networks, cell sizes are determined by the power needed to provide an acceptable signal-to-noise ratio to a certain percentage of a given coverage zone. Propagation within buildings introduces losses to the system. If the losses can be minimised, it is possible to use lower power levels, while still covering the same region, and increase the overall spectrum efficiency of the network. Theoretical and experimental work has been performed to show that propagation within buildings can be greatly improved by using techniques based on frequency selective surfaces (FSS). A novel structure is proposed that has the potential to enhance the propagation in corridors and stairwells. The structure, mode conversion FSS (MC-FSS), is highly efficient and converts and re-radiates the specular energy in a predefined direction away from the specular direction. The structure can easily be retrofitted into existing buildings, with minimal structural impact, and can be fabricated using very low cost materials. The technology has been demonstrated at 870 MHz but could be very useful for much higher frequency applications, for example future MM-wave wireless LAN systems.

The vector finite element-boundary integral method is adopted to formulate the radiation problem for the cavity-backed patch antenna. A robust well-conditioned asymptotic waveform evaluation (WCAWE) is employed to realize fast computing of input impedance of the patch antenna over a wide frequency band. Recent work on sparse MOM codes for PC applications has reduced LU matrix factorization time to significantly less than matrix fill for problem unknowns approaching 200,000. This paper reports on the use and results of applying the recently developed adaptive cross approximation for significantly reducing MOM matrix fill time. Results suggest that when problem sizes approach 500,000 unknowns, matrix fill can be reduced from 100 to 10 hours on a modern PC.
