A new wideband closed-form Green's function for a HED (horizontal electric dipole) over microstrip geometry is presented. The closed-form is valid over wide range of frequencies, and has the potential application for the time domain analysis of multilayer media by combining it with the MoM. It significantly reduces the computational time, as one only needs to sum few terms instead of repeating the time-consuming Sommerfeld's integrals. It may also be noted that the present method can be easily extended to other kinds of sources and applied to general lossy multilayer media.

This paper presents a novel method for the characterization of uniplanar electromagnetic band-gap structures. Their characterization requires the calculation of the dispersion diagram of the guided modes and the phase of the reflection coefficient under plane-wave illumination. The reflection coefficient is determined by using the MoM/BI-RME method. The same method is adopted in conjunction with a new technique for the efficient calculation of the dispersion diagram. This technique is based on the tracking of the eigenvalue path in the complex plane, and proved more reliable than the method based on the searching of the determinant zeros. The method is applied to the analysis of the classical Uniplanar Compact Electromagnetic Band-Gap structure, and some results show the accuracy of the method, its efficiency, and its convergence properties.

Rapid transit systems use running and third rails as mediums for electrical power and control signal transmission. Hence, the transmission line parameters (i.e., resistance, inductance, capacitance, conductance) are important. This paper concentrates on the calculation of the capacitance parameter. Because of the rail's irregular cross section shape, the calculation of capacitance is not as easy as that of a circular conductor. Two methods, the finite element method (FEM) and the method of moment (MOM), are proposed to solve this problem. The geometric allocation of the running and third rails in the Taipei rapid transit system is taken as an example and the results of calculation obtained using the two methods are to be compared.

The operation of a PIFA mounted on a finite ground plane is investigated. This includes the influence on the input and radiation characteristics caused by the placements of the short-circuit plate and the feed wire as well as where the antenna is mounted on a finite ground plane. It has been found that the location where the antenna is mounted on the finite ground plane has a significant impact on the resonant frequency, bandwidth and radiation characteristics. Moreover, the positions of both the short-circuit plate and the feed wire have little impact on the radiation characteristics of the PIFA. The numerical simulations have been validated by measurements.

The DFT-based approximate of the impedance matrix is employed as a preconditioner in the iterative method to provide an efficient and accurate solution of integral equations for solving electromagnetic scattering and radiation problems of large finite periodic antenna arrays in grounded layered media. The DFT-based preconditioner is shown to effectively improve the convergence of the iterative solutions. The complexity of the preconditioner implementation is O(KlogK) in computational cost and O(K) in memory requirement for problem size of O(K).

Base station antennas for sector coverage must frequently maintain tight control of the azimuth pattern shape, with elevation null fill and electrical downtilt capability often required as well. This is typically accomplished with one or more linear array elevation columns, using the minimum number necessary to produce the desired sector coverage. The azimuth pattern, then, is a function of the elevation column weighting and the elevation column patterns. Genetic algorithms are well suited to cross-section optimization for a desired azimuth pattern, either for a conventional chassis or a more complex shaped reflector surface. The key requirement is availability of an efficient scattering solution, provided in this work by 2D method of moments (MoM).

A miniaturized circularly polarized antenna based on the Sierpinski gasket is presented. In exchange for size reduction, minimum axial ratio and the bandwidth of this antenna are degraded. An additional new microstrip fractal antenna named the crown square antenna is also introduced and illustrated to have circular polarization when its feed location is near to the center of the antenna. We have also optimized this microstrip fractal antenna to get minimum axial ratio of 3.94 dB.

The method of moments transforms the antenna problem into a linear system. Wavelets are mainly used in MoM to render the system matrix sparse; clipping entries below a given threshold is an essential operation to obtain the desired sparse matrix. We present a novel way to estimate a priori the clipping threshold that produces an error on the solution lower than a desired error known as input. The procedure has a very low computational complexity, O(n). It is tested on a matrix obtained by applying the wavelet-based method of moments to a microstrip patch array structure.

JMS is an API specification that defines a standard way for Java applications to access messaging services. All JMS products promise good performance and to properly support the QoS attributes specified in the standard, making it hard to choose between them. Customers who want to determine which JMS product best meets their requirements need a simple, effective and fair methodology for evaluating and comparing competing implementations. This paper presents an empirical methodology for evaluating the QoS implementation of a JMS product. We present a number of test scenarios and define metrics for measuring performance and message persistence. We then illustrate this methodology by using it to evaluate two leading JMS products. Our evaluation results show differences between these products in terms of their overall performance and the impact of various QoS attributes. The case study demonstrates that our empirical methodology is an effective and practical way to test the performance of JMS and other messaging systems.
