This work deals with the application of the Time Domain Uniform Theory of Diffraction (TD-UTD) in wideband propagation predictions for urban scenarios. Results are presented and compared against those obtained by the application of an inverse Fourier transform upon the usual frequency-domain UTD and Method of Moments (MoM). In the frequency domain, multiple diffractions and lossy obstacles can be accounted for. However, in the adopted TD-UTD formulation only a single diffraction and perfect electric or magnetic conductors are considered. For the present TD-UTD analysis and for a typical urban radio channel where the antennas' heights are small compared to the buildings' heights, it is shown that the consideration of ground as a perfect magnetic conductor instead of an electric one provides a better approach for a vertical polarization over lossy ground. The buildings are treated as perfect electric conductors.

Using the method of moments, the paper solves the problem of diffraction of a plane, normally incident, H-polarized, electromagnetic wave over a periodic system of half planes of finite thickness, the spaces between which are filled with a dielectric having permittivity of the tensor type. A system of linear algebraic equations (SLAE) is written for the amplitudes of the field expansions in the homogeneous area (harmonics). The given computation results show a rather fast convergence of the harmonic amplitudes.

The EM-FAST feasible adjoint sensitivity technique has been proposed for use with frequency domain electromagnetic solvers. It employs finite differences to approximate the derivatives of the system matrix with respect to the design parameters. Here, we propose to estimate and update these derivatives by the classical Broyden technique. This significantly accelerates the response sensitivity analysis when EM-FAST is used for gradient-based optimization. Regardless of the number of design parameters, the response sensitivity is obtained with. computational overhead negligible in comparison with the system analysis. Our EM-Broyden technique is illustrated through the optimization of a Yagi-Uda antenna.

An efficient technique for the analysis of electromagnetic scattering by arbitrary shaped inhomogeneous dielectric objects is presented. The technique is based on a higher-order method of moments (MoM) solution of the volume integral equation. This higher-order MoM solution comprises recently developed higher-order hierarchical Legendre basis functions for expansion of the electric flux density and higher-order geometry modeling. An unstructured mesh composed by trilinear (8-node) and/or curved (27-node) hexahedral elements is used to represent the dielectric object accurately. It is shown that the condition number of the resulting MoM matrix is reduced by several orders of magnitude in comparison to existing higher-order hierarchical basis functions and, consequently, an iterative solver can be applied even for high expansion orders. Numerical results demonstrate excellent agreement with the analytical solutions for the dielectric sphere, as well as with results obtained by other numerical methods.

A novel design approach of frequency selective surfaces (FSS) using optimization tool based on real-coded genetic algorithm (RGA) method in conjunction with an electromagnetic solver based on the method of moments (MoM) method is proposed to tune the FSS unit cell dimensions in order to achieve desired frequency responses. The analysis of scattering from FSS screen is achieved by using the Galekin's method in MoM. The problem of FSS design can be cast into an optimization problem by minimizing the relative error function of frequency response coefficients affected by the optimization parameters. The object function is the relative error between the prescribed transmission coefficient and the simulated one. The validity of the proposed method is demonstrated by an example applying RGA to the design of a freestanding FSS with dipole element. The search robustness and simplicity of RGA are fully demonstrated.

One of the major challenges that appears in the design of microstrip arrays is the impact of mutual coupling on radiation properties. The mutual coupling between array elements can be calculated using the standard moment method procedure in spectral domain. However, with increased distance between elements, the high-oscillating part of the sub-integral in method of moments (MoM) matrix elements makes standard integration procedures inapplicable. A convenient method for overcoming this problem is to change the integration path towards imaginary values in the complex plane, thus transforming the oscillatory behaviour to an exponentially decaying one. The challenge consists in careful management of the loci of the poles and branch cuts of the Green's function in the spectral domain (Garino, M.S. et al., 2000; Kitchener, D. et al., 1987), which generally differs for each MoM matrix element and must be tailored differently. A method for calculating these high-oscillating integrals is developed, implemented and compared with experimental results. The developed software can handle either single or stacked rectangular patch configurations with arbitrary number of dielectric layers.

This paper introduces an e-business framework for developing rich and reliable client applications. The major advantages of our framework are: (1) it improves the usability of client applications, for example, providing a rich user experience (2) it increases the scalability of a server by exchanging small messages between the server and clients, (3) it provides reliable transactions by using message-oriented middleware, and (4) it provides disconnected operations. In this paper, we introduce our framework first, then described in detail our implementation of the server and client based on it, and show some new e-business examples made possible by our framework. Finally we point out some problems in constructing such a system and make comparisons with other possible approaches.

A novel three-layer neural network with knowledge-based neurons in the hidden layer (NNKBN) has been applied to model the microstrip T-junction structure. The NNKBN model is electromagnetically developed with a set of data that are produced by the MoM method. Numerical experiments show that the NNKBN model has many advantages over the conventional multi-layer perceptron model.

An elegant and efficient way to calculate and analytically show the main features of spiral patch antennas is presented in the following. The derivation of an approximate analytical expression for the dominant current density mode on the patch is firstly presented, from which it can be easily calculated the patch radiation pattern. Its invariance with frequency scaling, which is the main feature of such log-periodic antennas, is in particular shown, together with a good agreement with experimental results. An extension to higher-order modes for a MoM analysis of the current density is then suggested, which may be useful to study with more accuracy the other antenna characteristics, such as gain and input impedance at the feed.
