The most important application of fuzzy logic is designing controllers. Fuzzy logic controllers (FLC) are much easier to design than non-linear controllers of similar capabilities. The rules that a designer needs to create are often based on their current experience and knowledge. Conventional FLCs use Center of Gravity or Mean of Maxima defuzzification methods, though other methods have been studied. This paper compares the efficiency of many different models of the defuzzification process. The goal is to examine the accuracy of the output data and the amount of processing time required. A simple controller that backs a truck up to a gate is used in the study. All of the variables are granulated with trapezoidal fuzzy numbers. Some of the defuzzification methods examined are Fast Center of Gravity, Mean of Maxima, True Center of Gravity and various new methods that have shown promise in application.

Smart card integration in the Internet is growing in interest. However, most of proposed architectures focus on request-response interaction model, which limits the management of smart card mobility and intermittent connectivity. We propose an alternative approach, that is, the publish-subscribe model. This model is particularly suited to achieve decoupling of interacting peers. We have designed a publish-subscribe layer for the smart card that implements the SmartTP communication stack, which can be seen as an ultimate Internet node. We have given special attention to the security requirements that are natively achieved by smart cards.

In this paper, we have presented an efficient cascading procedure for analyzing an FSS composite system, comprising of multiple FSS screens of unequal periodicities, embedded in multiple dielectric layers. The numerical examples demonstrate the efficiency and effectiveness of the technique. Based on this procedure, a computer program has been developed for the analysis of dissimilar FSS systems.

The locally-corrected Nystrom (LCN) discretization method may offer improved computational efficiency and a more systematic means of incorporating higher-order representations (and better accuracy) than traditional MoM approaches. In this research, we consider applying the LCN method to multilayer planar problems in package designs. Several examples will be used to illustrate the modeling.

We introduce new methodologies employing a genetic algorithm (GA) to evolve classes of antenna shapes that are circularly polarized and offer optimal performance characteristics such as input impedance, VSWR, bandwidth, and/or gain. These new methodologies are also capable of producing designs that are significantly smaller when compared to a conventional crossed-dipole antenna. It is demonstrated that, by utilizing these design approaches for miniature, circularly polarized, stochastic, crossed-dipole antennas, size reductions of over 40% are typically achieved, and in some cases, it is even possible to realize designs with size reductions up to 86%. An important feature of these antennas is that the size reduction achieved is in terms of area, which differs from the case of stochastic linear dipoles where a reduction in length is achieved at the expense of an increase in width.

A new method is presented for efficient computation of the matrix elements in the method of moment (MOM) solution of electromagnetic problems. This method is based on expressing the free space Green's function as a finite series of plane waves. In this way, the surface integrals involved can be obtained analytically as closed form expressions. Using this method, the complexity of filling the matrix is reduced from O(N/sup 2/) to O(N).

Messaging systems, which include message brokers built on top of message-oriented middleware, have been used as middleware components in many enterprise application integration projects. There are many COTS-based messaging systems on the market, but there is little concrete understanding in the software industry on the performance of these different technologies. The authors have carried out a scenario-based evaluation of three leading messaging systems to provide insight into performance issues. The evaluation process includes a study of the sustained performance of the system under load. The result of this study is used to derive a generic metric for quantifying a messaging system's performance. The paper describes a synthetic transactional scenario, which is used for load tests and performance measurement. The results from executing this test scenario with three messaging systems are then presented and explained. Copyright (C) 2003 John Wiley Sons, Ltd.

The paper discusses the choice of the element shape in planar periodic structures (frequency selective surfaces and reflectarrays). On the one hand, the element shape mainly determines the performance of the periodic structure (e.g., in terms of bandwidth, cross-polarization level), and, on the other hand, it is strictly related to fabrication issues. The analysis tools, based on the MoM/BI-RME (method of moments/boundary integral-resonant mode expansion) method (which allows for dealing with arbitrarily shaped elements), are briefly presented, and the solutions adopted in some practical cases are reported. With regards to reflectarrays, a novel method, based on a perturbation technique, is outlined and applied to the fast calculation of the phase diagram.

An approximate full-wave method for the electromagnetic analysis of thick apertures is presented. The method has the great advantage of not increasing the computational burden with respect to the zero-thickness case. At the same time, the hindrance of evaluating the cavity Green's function for arbitrary shaped structures is avoided. The method shows good results when compared to the full-wave cavity analysis of apertures in metallic screens of practical thicknesses up to /spl lambda//10.

A new approximation method is presented to aid the development of G-E closed-form Green's functions for single-layer and multi-layer structures. Based on this closed-form Green's functions, a closed-form method of moments (MoM) is developed for accurate, full-wave analysis of microstrip components and antennas. The key advantage of the new MoM is that, because of the simplicity of G-E closed-form Green's functions, the MoM matrix elements can be calculated without any numerical integration. It is found that the new method generates results that are as accurate as those from conventional moment methods, but with less number of unknowns.
