The paper presents novel performance results for p-adaptive hybrid FE-BI (finite element-boundary integral) analysis of externally excited, homogeneous, lossy regions in free space. The problems are considered with the object of calculating average specific absorption rate (SAR) and far-field values. Such problems are of interest, since problems of antenna-human interaction for establishing safety guidelines, fall into this category, which motivates the focus on SAR and far-field values. After reviewing the theory, results are presented, leading to the conclusion that the adaptive scheme cannot reduce the solution time, but can reduce the memory requirements by 15-25%.

To obtain good performance in messaging over mobile networks, we have developed a Gateway. Gateway is a message hub that transmits information using store-and-forward messaging and provides powerful optimization and data transformation. The SmartCaching component provides generic caching in an N-tier architecture, an essential function of Gateway. Gateway can be integrated into Pronto, a middleware system for mobile applications with messaging as a basis [15]. Pronto then offers: 1) a lightweight client of message oriented middleware (MOM) based on Java message Service(JMS), 2) Gateway for reliable and efficient transmission between mobile devices and a server and 3) Serverless JMS based on IP multicast. Integration of Gateway within Pronto provides a solution for mobile application-specific problems such as resource constraints, network characteristics, and data optimization.

A theoretical method is presented to compute electromagnetic fields due to a radiating wire inside a lossy ground. The method uses a modified image theory for replacing the ground, and utilizes the method of moment (MoM) for solving the governing electric field integral equation (EFIE). The new method can include the inevitable leakage current along the wire, and end-point contribution. As a case study, the transient performance of a conducting wire inside a lossy medium and illuminated by a Gaussian pulse is investigated. It is shown that the leakage currents can considerably affect the field distribution around the wire.

The German along-track stereo scanner MOMS-2P delivered 3-line stereo imagery of many parts in the world from 1996 till 1999. Its satellite platform was the Russian space station Mir. The relative accuracy of the exterior orientation of the MOMS camera based upon GPS and gyro measurements (1 m and 1-2 arcseconds, respectively) was sufficient with respect to MOMS ground pixel size of 17 m. In order to get the absolute orientation, bias and drift parameters and some values of the interior orientation of the camera have to be estimated via bundle adjustment. For this task, ground control points (GCP) have to be provided. For large areas in Afghanistan, Jordan, and Libya, geocoded thematic mapper imagery was available. Automated image matching is used to extract thousands of GCP even though the time gap between Landsat and MOMS imaging ranges from 8 to 11 years. The geoid height of the GCP is taken from available digital elevation models (DEM) of lower accuracy. The GCP enter a bundle adjustment which results in improved values of exterior and interior orientation. These are then used in DEM derivation and orthoimage production for the three MOMS viewing directions. DLR's MOMS stereo workstation software is used for all these tasks. The fit between TM and MOMS orthoimages and between the orthoimages of the off-nadir looking MOMS channels is checked via automated image matching. Mean and standard deviations of the shifts are found to be in sub-pixel range.

A new and efficient scheme for the adaptive integral method (AIM) is presented for solving the RCS of large scattering objects. An interlaced grid system is introduced to reduce the memory requirement for the FFT calculation. The total memory resource required for FFT calculation with the new scheme is approximately 5.6 times less than the conventional AIM method. Interactions between the different grid systems are obtained by using interpolation. It is proven that the /sup c/omplexity of the newly proposed scheme is the same as the conventional AIM.

Some astronomers theorize that the universe is filled with "dark matter" that we can?t see. We can apply a similar analogy to middleware because the "mass" of the middleware universe is much greater than the systems. We can't see them, and we don't talk about them, but they're out there solving real-world integration problems - and profoundly influencing the middleware space. These systems are the dark matter of the middleware universe.

Web services interaction models, part 1: Current practice

Each middleware approach has one or more interaction models associated with it that determine how applications built on top of the middleware interact with each other. message-oriented middleware (MOM) applications interact rather simply, for example, by posting messages to and retrieving messages from queues. Object-oriented middleware applications such as those based on Corba or Enterprise Java Beans (EJB) interact by invoking methods on distributed objects. Because interaction models significantly influence the types of abstractions a middleware system makes available to applications, they figure prominently in determining the breadth and variety of application integration that the middleware supports. As Web services evolve, they too will acquire standard interaction models; otherwise, their use will be limited to small-scale proprietary systems, rather than providing the standards-based "middleware for middleware" for uniting disparate islands of integration. At this point, however, the industry and standards bodies have yet to reach consensus on Web services interaction models. I consider some of the problems associated with a popular current approach to Web services interaction models.

Conventional method of moments (MoM), when directly applied to integral equations arising in numerical solution of electromagnetic(EM) scattering problems, leads to a dense( fully populated) matrix which often becomes computationally ungovernable even for supercomputers, especially when the electrical size of the scatterer becomes large. To overcome this difficulty, wavelet bases have been used recently which lead to a sparse matrix that can be solved easily by an efficient sparse solver. Using wavelet in solving EM integral equations has been widely studied. The purpose of this paper is to develop a strategy for efficient wavelet solution of integral equations by connecting and using efficient studies have been done in this area. Numerical results are provided to illustrate the validity of the proposed approach.
