We study the performance of the metropolis algorithm for the problem of finding a code word of weight less than or equal to M, given a generator matrix of an [n, k]-binary linear code. The algorithm uses the set Sk of all k x k invertible matrices as its search space where two elements are considered adjacent if one can be obtained from the other via an elementary row operation (i.e by adding one row to another or by swapping two rows.) We prove that the Markov chains associated with the metropolis algorithm mix rapidly for suitable choices of the temperature parameter T. We ran the metropolis algorithm for a number of codes and found that the algorithm performed very well in comparison to previously known experimental results.

In this work, the thermodynamic and magnetic properties such as total and partial magnetizations, magnetic susceptibility, internal energy, total specific heat, magnetic hysteresis loops and compensation temperature of a ferrimagnetic mixed spins-3/2 and spins-5/2 hexagonal Ising nanowire, have been determined by using Monte Carlo method based on the metropolis algorithm. The effects of the longitudinal crystal field, the exchange interactions and the temperature on the magnetic properties and hysteresis loops are examined in detail for different values of the system parameters. Moreover, different interesting magnetic phenomena were obtained, such as the seven and triple hysteresis loops at low temperatures, the tricritical point and compensation behavior under certain physical parameters were detected. Our results are also compared with some experimental and theoretical results.

A Bayes Study of Human Fertility Curve Using Mixture of Two Weibull Densities

The paper considers the use of a mixture of two Weibull densities to represent fertility patterns with a hump or bimodality behaviour, a pattern in fertility that has been noticed by researchers in the last two to three decades. Assuming the births to be distributed as a binomial variate and taking into account the period age-specific fertility rates, the paper relies on the Bayes paradigm to provide the complete posterior analysis. Guided by the results of the proposed mixture of two Weibull densities, the paper then proposes two other mixture models, that is, the mixture of normal and Weibull and the mixture of normal and generalized gamma densities. The metropolis algorithm with a properly chosen candidate generating density is considered to generate the posterior samples in each case. The unabridged data are used for numerical illustration. Finally, the proposed models are compared to recommend the most appropriate model after establishing the compatibility of the proposed models with the data in hand. The work is, of course, motivated by the earlier studies that overlooked the use of more flexible lifetime models in studying fertility patterns with hump or bimodality and, as such, prompting us to integrate them into our analysis.

Transient Behavior of Damage Spreading in the Two-Dimensional Blume-Capel Ferromagnet

We study the transient behavior of damage propagation in the two-dimensional spin-1 Blume-Capel model using Monte Carlo simulations with metropolis dynamics. We find that, for a particular region in the second-order transition regime of the crystal field-temperature phase diagram of the model, the average Hamming distance decreases exponentially with time in the weakly damaged system. Additionally, its rate of decay appears to depend linearly on a number of Hamiltonian parameters, namely the crystal field, temperature, applied magnetic field, but also on the amount of damage. Finally, a comparative study using metropolis and Glauber dynamics indicates a slower decay rate of the average Hamming distance for the Glauber protocol.

Until now, the correspondence between the Alexander-Kolmogorov complex, and the de Rham one, by means of a small scale parameter, has not gone that far as passing to the limit of the resolvent of the associated Laplacian, when the small parameter tends towards zero. Along these lines, a result proving a complete Hodge decomposition was missing. We bridge this gap by means of our own rescaled h-cohomology, h being a very small parameter. Passing to the limit of the resolvent enables us to consider the extension to singular spaces, in particular, our h-differential operators also enable us to also make the connection with those of analysis on fractals, as introduced by Jun Kigami, and taken up by Robert S. Strichartz.

Monte Carlo simulation of recrystallization and grain growth in Annealed Al-4% Cu alloy: Validation through experimental microstructure comparison

The study of recrystallization and grain growth in annealed metals has been extensively investigated using various computational approaches, with Monte Carlo (MC) simulations proving particularly effective. This research highlights the application of the MC method in simulating microstructures that closely resemble experimentally observed ones. The experimental microstructures were obtained from a 50% cold-worked Al-4% Cu (Duralumin) alloy, annealed at different conditions. The metropolis algorithm was employed to simulate the microstructures using a two-dimensional Potts model on a square lattice. The simulated results strongly correlate with the actual microstructures, validating the effectiveness of the MC method in exploring grain growth phenomena. This study underscores the potential of MC simulations as a robust tool for investigating recrystallization and grain evolution in annealed metals.

A Bayes analysis of autoregressive model having functional-coefficients and its application on exchange rate data

The paper provides a Bayes analysis, based on free-knot spline technique, of the popular autoregressive model having functional-coefficients. The model was initially proposed by Chen and Tsay (1993). The technique of polynomial splines of different orders is used to approximate the functional-coefficients. A sample based approach using the Gibbs sampler algorithm with intermediate metropolis steps is adopted to draw the posterior estimates for the parameters involved. Additionally, the technique of reversible jump Markov chain Monte Carlo is incorporated to update the location and number of knots in the polynomial spline. The paper then proceeds with the motive of obtaining both retrospective and prospective predictions based on the selected model. The complete procedure is illustrated by both simulated and a real dataset representing the exchange rate of Indian rupees relative to the US dollars.

In this paper, we show the application of the quantum metropolis sampling (QMS) algorithm to a toy gauge theory with discrete non-Abelian gauge group D4 in (2+1)-dimensions, discussing in general how some components of hybrid quantum-classical algorithms should be adapted in the case of gauge theories. In particular, we discuss the construction of random unitary operators which preserve gauge invariance and act transitively on the physical Hilbert space, constituting an ergodic set of quantum metropolis moves between gauge invariant eigenspaces, and introduce a protocol for gauge invariant measurements. Furthermore, we show how a finite resolution in the energy measurements distorts the energy and plaquette distribution measured via QMS, and propose a heuristic model that takes into account part of the deviations between numerical results and exact analytical results, whose discrepancy tends to vanish by increasing the number of qubits used for the energy measurements.

Multinomial Logit Processes and Preference Discovery: Inside and Outside the Black Box

We provide two characterizations, one axiomatic and the other neuro-computational, of the dependence of choice probabilities on deadlines, within the widely used softmax representation p(t) (a, A)= e(u(a)/lambda(t) +) (alpha(alpha))/Sigma(b is an element of A)e (u(b)/lambda(t) + alpha(b)), where p(t) (a, A) is the probability that alternative a is selected from the set A of feasible alternatives if t is the time available to decide, lambda is a time-dependent noise parameter measuring the unit cost of information, u is a time-independent utility function, and alpha is an alternative-specific bias that determines the initial choice probabilities (reflecting prior information and memory anchoring). Our axiomatic analysis provides a behavioural foundation of softmax (also known as Multinomial Logit Model when alpha is constant). Our neuro-computational derivation provides a biologically inspired algorithm that may explain the emergence of softmax in choice behaviour. Jointly, the two approaches provide a thorough understanding of softmaximization in terms of internal causes (neuro-physiological mechanisms) and external effects (testable implications).

Dynamic phase transitions in Ba2NiWO6 and Sr2NiWO6 perovskites were investigated using the Monte Carlo simulations and ab initio calculations based on full potential linearized augmented plane wave method. Monte Carlo simulations have shown that the magnitude or period of the time-dependent magnetic field increases and the critical temperature remains almost constant. This behavior makes it possible to affirm that a time-dependent magnetic field induces a disorder while a time-independent field induces order. We have studied these dynamic phase transitions in these systems to obtain the information on the dynamics of these systems, relevant and interesting for many scientific fields.
