In order to develop thermal power plants operational capabilities to face the new operational challenges of electrical power, in this paper we propose an approach to design operational procedures on a drum boiler of a thermal power plant. The proposed approach uses a coupled system of a simulation model and a metaheuristic optimization algorithm. The simulation model is developed in the modeling and simulation environment OpenModelica and the metaheuristic optimization algorithm is a micro-genetic algorithm (mGA). The results show that optimized operating profiles minimize the startup time to reach the drum boiler goal state by at least 35 percent and generate control valves operating sequences that must be carry out to achieve the desired profile. Optimum design of cold-formed steel columns by using micro genetic algorithms

Cold-formed steel members such as beams and columns have the great flexibility of cross-sectional profiles and sizes available to structural steel designers. However, this flexibility makes the selection of the most economical section difficult for a particular situation. In this study, micro genetic algorithm (MGA) is used to find an optimum cross section of cold-formed steel channel and lipped channel columns under axial compression. Flexural, torsional and torsional-flexural buckling of columns and flat-width-to-thickness ratio of web, flange and lip are considered as constraints. The design curves are generated for optimum values of the thickness, the web flat-depth-to-thickness ratio, the flange flat-width-to-thickness ratio for columns. As numerical results, the optimum design curves are presented for various load level and column lengths. (C) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

This paper introduces the intelligent sequence design system of multi-stage cold extrusion. It discusses the method to build the part feature modeling and to realize feasibility checking, process planning and evaluation, process parameter optimization and sequence optimal selection, mainly focuses on the feature modeling and system implementation strategy. According to the given input data, the system can generate the forgeable geometry and the basic sequence design and evaluates the sequences, depending on the initial billet size and material or the evaluation knowledge in the knowledge base. Robust decentralised frequency stabilisers design of static synchronous series compensators by taking system uncertainties into consideration

This paper presents a new robust decentralised frequency stabilisers design of Static Synchronous Series Compensators (SSSCs) by taking system uncertainties into consideration. As an interconnected power system is subjected to load disturbances with changing frequency in the vicinity of the inter-area oscillation mode, system frequency may be severely disturbed and oscillate. To compensate for such load disturbances and stabilise frequency oscillations, the dynamic power flow control by an SSSC installed in series with a tie line between interconnected systems can be applied. The proposed decentralised design translates SSSCs installed in interconnected power systems into a Multi-Input Multi-Output (MIMO) system. The overlapping decompositions is used to extract the decoupled Single-Input Single-Output (SISO) subsystem embedded with the inter-area mode of interest from an MIMO system. As a result, each frequency stabiliser of SSSC can be independently designed to enhance the damping of the inter-area mode in the decoupled subsystem. In addition, by incorporating the multiplicative uncertainty model in the decoupled subsystem, the robust stability margin of system against uncertainties such as various load changes, system parameters variations etc., can be guaranteed in terms of the multiplicative stability margin (MSM). In this study, the configuration of frequency stabiliser is practically based on a second-order lead/lag compensator. Without trial and error, the control parameters of the frequency stabiliser are automatically optimised by a micro genetic algorithm, so that the desired damping ratio of the inter-area mode and the best MSM are acquired. Simulation study shows the high robustness of the decentralised frequency stabilisers against various load disturbances and system parameter variations in the three-area loop interconnected (c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. This study presents vibration and lateral buckling optimisation of thin-walled laminated composite beams with channel sections. While flanges' width, web's height, and fibre orientation are simultaneously treated as design variables, the objective function involves maximising the fundamental frequency and critical buckling moment. Based on the classical beam theory, the beam element with seven degrees of freedom at each node is developed to solve the problem. micro genetic algorithm (micro-GA) is then employed as an optimisation tool to obtain optimal results. A number of composite channel-section beams with different types of boundary conditions, span-to-height ratios, and lay-up schemes are investigated for the optimum design. The outcomes reveal that geometric parameters severely govern the optimal solution rather than the fibre orientation and it is considerably effective to use micro-GA compared with regular GA in term of optimal solution and convergence rate. Prediction and optimization of influential kerf width parameters for machining of aluminum hybrid ceramic composite material

In this study, the effectiveness of different wire feed rates, pulsed current, spark gap voltage, pulse on time, and pulse off time was investigated to determine their impact on kerf width. The ideal parameters for wire-EDM machining of aluminum hybrid ceramic composite were determined through experimental investigation and an adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS). Additionally, five distinct predictive models for influential kerf width parameters were developed as an innovative approach. A hybrid learning methodology combining back propagation and least square estimations was employed to create these predictive models. The prediction ranked the machining parameters affecting kerf width dimensions as wire feed rate, pulsed current, pulse on time, pulse off time, and spark gap voltage. Experimental findings showed that the kerf width of the machined workpiece significantly increased as the wire feed rate increased. This exploratory study suggested a wire feed rate setting of 3 mm/min with a current of 2 A and a pulse on time of 0.6 mu s to achieve the best quality machined surface for the aluminum hybrid ceramic composite. Similarly, the proposed optimization model results proved that the experimental findings were near-optimal solutions.

Development of performance model and optimization strategy for standalone operation of CPV-hydrogen system utilizing multi-junction solar cell

Despite highest energy potential, solar energy is only available during diurnal period with varying intensity. Therefore, owing to solar intermittency, solar energy systems need to operate in standalone configuration for steady power supply which requires reliable and sustainable energy storage. Hydrogen production has proved to be the most reliable and sustainable energy storage option for medium and long term operation. However, at the first priority, solar energy must be captured with high efficiency, in order to reduce the overall size of the system and energy storage. Multi-junction solar cells (MJCs) provide highest energy efficiency among all of the photovoltaic technologies and the concentrated photovoltaic (CPV) system concept makes their use cost effective. However, literature is lacking the performance model and optimization strategy for standalone operation of the CPV-hydrogen system. In addition, there is no commercial tool available that can analyze CPV performance, utilizing multi-junction solar cell. This paper proposes the performance model for the CPV-hydrogen systems and the multi-objective optimization strategy for its standalone operation and techno-economic analysis, using micro genetic algorithm (micro-GA). The electrolytic hydrogen production with compression storage and fuel cell, is used as energy storage system. The CPV model is verified for the experimental data of InGaP/InGaAs/Ge triple junction solar cell. An optimal CPV system design is provided for uninterrupted power supply, even under seasonal weather variations. Such approach can be easily integrated with commercial tools and the presented performance data can be used for the design of individual components of the system. A new adaptive genetic algorithm for fixed channel assignment

This paper presents a new genetic algorithm (GA) with good convergence properties and a remarkable low computational load. Such features are achieved by on-line tuning up the probabilities of mutation and crossover on the basis of the analysis of the individuals' fitness entropy. This way, a brand new method to control and adjust the population diversity is obtained. The resulting GA attains quality solutions, thus offering an interesting alternative to other global search techniques, such as simulated annealing, Tabu search and neural networks, as well as to standard GAs. The new algorithm is applied to solve the problem of frequency reuse in mobile cellular communication systems, where the main aim is to obtain a conflict-free channel assignment among the cells such that the resulting bandwidth is close to the minimum channel span required for the whole network. The algorithm performance has been tested and compared by making use of a selection of the most well-known benchmark instances;optimal bandwidth solutions have been achieved within a reasonable computation time. Development of Small Dielectric Lens for Slot Antenna Using Topology Optimization with Normalized Gaussian Network

This paper reports a novel 3D topology optimization method based on the finite difference time domain (FDTD) method for a dielectric lens antenna. To obtain an optimal lens with smooth boundary, we apply normalized Gaussian networks (NGnet) to 3D topology optimization. Using the proposed method, the dielectric lens with desired radiation characteristics can be designed. As an example of the optimization using the proposed method, the width of the main beam is minimized assuming spatial symmetry. In the optimization, the lens is assumed to be loaded on the aperture of a waveguide slot antenna and is smaller compared with the wavelength. It is shown that the optimized lens has narrower beamwidth of the main beam than that of the conventional lens.

Comparative Study of Optimization Technique for the Global Performance Indices of the Robot Manipulator Based on an Approximate Model

This paper presents the procedure and results of the multi-objective design optimization of a seven-degrees-of-freedom (7DOF) robot manipulator for better global performance, which pertains to the Global Conditioning Index (GCI) and the Structural Length Index (SLI). The concepts of, and the calculation techniques for, GCI and SLI are introduced to allow their use as objective functions for optimization. The optimization techniques, which are Sequential Two-point Diagonal Quadratic Approximate Optimization (STDQAO), the Progressive Quadratic Response Surface Method (PQRSM), the micro genetic algorithm (mu GA), and the evolutionary algorithm (EA), were explained briefly, and they are being used to optimize the global performance indices of the robot manipulator. Also, the results of the optimization and comparison of the four optimization methods are summarized in tables.
