Single-cell analysis serves as an important approach to study cell functions and interactions. Catering to the demand of Big Data Era, fast reactions for single cells and paralleled high-throughput analysis have become an urgent need. Microdroplet in microfluidics has advantages of modularity and integrity, as well as high throughput and sensitivity, which present great potential in the field of single-cell analysis. This review is carried out on three aspects to introduce microdroplet chips for single-cell analysis: droplet formation, droplet detection and practical functions. Structures of droplet formation are categorized into three types, including T-shaped channel, flow-involved channel and three-dimensional micro-vortice. The detection methods, including fluorescence, Raman spectroscopy, mass spectroscopy and electrochemical detection, are summarized from applications. Both pros and cons for existing techniques are reviewed and discussed. The functions of microdroplets-on-chip cover cell culture, nucleic acid test and cell identification. For each field, principles/mechanisms and/or schematic images are laconically introduced. Microdroplet in microfluidics has become a major research direction in single-cell analysis. With updated methods of droplet formation such as inertial ordering and micro-vortice, microdroplets-based biochips will expect high throughput detection and high-accuracy trace detection for clinical diagnosis in the near future.

The current designs of commercial artificial hands have a low level of innovation. As feedback to the user is difficult to achieve reliably, most devices are simple in design and operation, and limited in functional range. If information on the state of the hand, the forces and any slippage that is occurring is fed back to a microcontroller then more than one degree of freedom can be controlled and a greater and more natural functional range is possible. This paper describes the development of such a device. It outlines the design requirements, the methods of detection of the signals and the training required to operate the hand.

New lab experiments were developed for the students to investigate the effect of electromagnetic interference on the operation of microcontrollers. The objectives of the experiments include exposing students to the effect of noisy power supply on microcontroller performance and to learn how to use modern instruments for recording the results. In the experiments, the noise is restricted to electromagnetic interference from external sources at radio frequencies picked up by the power supply conductors. As wireless communication technologies have been widely used, such lab investigation is of current interest to the students. There was no simple way to produce the radio frequency interference of sufficient magnitude in our lab. A method was used to emulate the picking up of such interference on the power supply conductors. This paper describes such a method. It also describes the new experiments, their benefits for the students, the evaluations, and suggestions for improvements.

A set of reference designs suitable for our student design projects was developed and tested. The purpose is to make them available for students to choose the ones suitable for integration into their projects with confidence. All the reference designs are available on our website. Some of those that are intended for embedded control applications are described in this paper. They are reference designs for DC motor driver, stepper motor driver, and GPS module. These reference designs were adopted into our embedded control projects before. Other reference designs were also developed but due to limited space are not included into this paper but the hyperlinks to them are provided. Some of the interesting projects and their evaluations are also described in this paper. Another aspect of this paper is the description of the structure of the reference designs and the various issues encountered. The information should be useful to those intend to develop reference designs for their own design courses.

This paper discusses the tradeoffs of using two different approaches for designing and implementing digital control systems for electrical engineering course projects. The usage of an off-the-shelf microcontroller unit (MCU) is explored and contrasted to the more traditional approach based on personal computers (PCs), data acquisition cards (DaqCs), and programs like RTW, Lab View, and Matlab/Simulink. We discuss how an MCU-based approach was developed and tested in the design and implementation of a two-loop digital feedback control system for a Ball-and-Beam mechanical system. Results show that by using an MCU it is possible to achieve a performance comparable to that of using PC's and data acquisition cards with the added advantage of exposing students to an experience closer to the actual way most digital control systems are implemented in practice.

A complete adjustable and automated system has been developed on the base of three blocks: the first one is the mechanical and adjustable structure, which is composed by a mobile base and a rectangular arc, where the photo-detector is located. The structure describes semi-spherical trajectories by means of two servomotors. Its lightweight and robustness constitutes two advantages which make it portable. The second stage corresponds to the automation of the structure movements. For controlling the motors and data acquisition, a microcontroller is employed that in turns helps keeping the cost of the overall system low. One of the servomotors is located on the lateral axis of the device;that displaces the sensor along a semi-circular trajectory of 160 degrees, almost half meridians;the other one is located at the base of the illumination source, which enables it to realize an almost complete rotation around its axis. Finally, the last stage is formed by the graphical interface. The communication protocol between the data acquisition stage and the computer is USART. The graphical user interface (GUI) is developed using Visual C#. In the same window the data acquisition deployment and the data graph generator are given;the graphs can be shown in a polar or Cartesian formats showing more than one curve, if necessary, avoiding the use of additional software. The GUI keeps the low cost of the device, obtaining a comprehensive solution to generate the irradiance patterns of light sources.

Tire inflators are widely used all around the word and the efficient and accurate operation is essential. The main difficulty in improving the inflation cycle of a tire inflator is the identification of the tire connected for inflation. A robust single hidden layer feed forward neural network (SLFN) is, thus, used in this study to model and predict the correct tire size. The tire size is directly related to the tire inflation cycle. Once the tire size is identified, the inflation process can be optimized to improve performance, speed and accuracy of the inflation system. Properly inflated tire and tire condition is critical to vehicle safety, stability and controllability. The training times of traditional back propagation algorithms, mostly used to model such tire identification processes, are far slower than desired for implementation of an on-line control system. Use of slow gradient based learning methods and iterative tuning of all network parameters during the learning process are the two major causes for such slower learning speed. An extreme learning machine (ELM) algorithm, which randomly selects the input weights and biases and analytically determines the output weights, is used in this work to train the SLFNs. It is found that networks trained with ELM have relatively good generalization performance, much shorter training times and stable performance with regard to the changes in number of hidden layer neurons. The result represents robustness of the trained networks and enhance reliability of the mode. Together with short training time, the algorithm has valuable application in tire identification process.

Motor vehicle accidents are one of the main killers on the road. Modern vehicles have several safety features to improve the stability and controllability. The tire condition is critical to the proper function of the designed safety features. Under or over inflated tires adversely affects the stability of vehicles. It is generally the vehicle's user responsibility to ensure the tire inflation pressure is set and maintained to the required value using a tire inflator. In the tire inflator operation, the vehicle's user sets the desired value and the machine has to complete the task. During the inflation process, the pressure sensor does not read instantaneous static pressure to ensure the target value is reached. Hence, the inflator is designed to stop repetitively for pressure reading and avoid over inflation. This makes the inflation process slow, especially for large tires. This paper presents a novel approach using artificial neural network based technique to identify the tire size. Once the tire size is correctly identified, an optimized inflation cycle can be computed to improve performance, speed and accuracy of the inflation process. The developed neural network model was successfully simulated and tested for predicting tire size from the given sets of input parameters. The test results are analyzed and discussed in this paper.
