The underlying potential of NLP for microcontroller programming education

The trend for an increasingly ubiquitous and cyber-physical world has been leveraging the use and importance of microcontrollers (mu C) to unprecedented levels. Therefore, microcontroller programming (mu CP) becomes a paramount skill for electrical and computer engineering students. However, mu CP poses significant challenges for undergraduate students, given the need to master low-level programming languages and several algorithmic strategies that are not usual in "generic" programming. Moreover, mu CP can be time-consuming and complex even when using high-level languages. This article samples the current state of mu CP education in Portugal and unveils the potential support of natural language processing (NLP) tools (such as chatGPT). Our analysis of mu CP curricular units from seven representative Portuguese engineering schools highlights a predominant use of AVR 8-bit mu C and project-based learning. While NLP tools emerge as strong candidates as students' mu C companion, their application and impact on the learning process and outcomes deserve to be understood. This study compares the most prominent NLP tools, analyzing their benefits and drawbacks for mu CP education, building on both hands-on tests and literature reviews. By providing automatic code generation and explanation of concepts, NLP tools can assist students in their learning process, allowing them to focus on software design and real-world tasks that the mu C is designed to handle, rather than on low-level coding. We also analyzed the specific impact of chatGTP in the context of a mu CP course at ISEP, confirming most of our expectations, but with a few curiosities. Overall, this work establishes the foundations for future research on the effective integration of NLP tools in mu CP courses.

Embedded systems and applications have recently emerged as a domain of high interest to the general public in developing countries. Unfortunately, these countries lack the technological infrastructure for the design, testing, and implementation of projects in the domain. This paper presents a Very Simple programming Kit (VSPK) for Embedded Systems suitable for practical training, project design, and testing in the domain for use in developing countries. The microcontroller-based system makes it easy to test, teach and train in various areas of embedded systems including programming, communication, signal acquisition and processing, remote control, and domotics. A VSPK prototype has been produced and is used for real-time simulation of Embedded applications. This operation involves the VSPK, the PIC programmer, the PC and the application program to be tested progressively and the displays observed on the LCD and LEDs. The debugging process is easily performed and errors are detected and corrected. The main features of VSPK are low production cost, low power consumption, flexible peripheral pin selection, integrated LCD module, and simple hardware and software environment. Unlike similar kits available for educational purposes, VSPK possesses some advantages such as an integrated graphic color LCD, a configurable internal oscillator, numerically controlled oscillators, testing LEDs, testing buttons, and complete access to multiple programming languages. Two experimental and simple tests for validation of VSPK have been carried out, and the results show that VSPK performs satisfactorily.

CanSats represent an excellent educational tool for introducing undergraduate students to disciplines related to space technologies. Their construction involves knowledge in programming, mechanics, electronics, telecommunications, among other fields. Despite their inherent accessibility and affordability, the scarcity and difficulty in acquiring high-quality electronic components, SMT components, and high-precision PCB manufacturing services can complicate, increase costs, and prolong their development in regions like Bolivia. This article addresses the development of an accessible, modular, extensible, and low-cost CanSat designed to perform standard functions such as collecting environmental data using various sensors (pressure, altitude, temperature, humidity, angular velocity, acceleration, and geographic positioning), executing pseudo-space missions, and serving as educational material in related fields.

In smart highways and smart roads, detection and measuring the vehicle speed is essential for monitoring purposes and proper traffic and lane keeping operations. In our previous work, we presented a piezoelectric harvester and speed sensor by embedding, in the asphalt, two piezoelectric modules at a known distance. Each one generates pulses when stressed by the vehicle wheels. These pulses are collected by the Arduino microcontroller. Then, the vehicle speed is estimated using an estimation algorithm. The practical testing was carried out using the Hamburg Wheel Tracking machine which has limitation in varying the speed. In this work, we extend the practical testing of the system using two free fall objects that sequentially stress the two piezoelectric modules, thus generating two pulses have a time delay that is controlled using timing circuit. The pulses are acquired using the Arduino microcontroller. Then, the vehicle speed is estimated from the time difference between the two pulses. The experiment is repeated for different time delays to evaluate the sensing accuracy. Results have shown considerable accuracy in sensing the speed when the time delay between the pulses varies from 2s to 10s.

This paper presents the utilization of the ESP32 microcontroller as a teaching tool for signal acquisition, processing, and control theory in biotechnological engineering. The ESP32 microcontroller, equipped with Bluetooth and WiFi capabilities, offers an affordable and versatile solution for educational purposes. By leveraging the Arduino (c) software, students can easily learn microcontroller programming and utilize various peripherals such as sensors and actuators. Several practical exercises related to process control have been conducted using this microcontroller. Additionally, remote process monitoring and control are enabled through integration with a database. Furthermore, concepts of artificial intelligence are explored using the Edge Impulse platform to obtain an artificial neural network that can be downloaded onto the ESP32. Positive feedback from students highlights the effectiveness and engagement of utilizing these microcontrollers, and the integration of internet connectivity enhances the overall learning experience.

The desire to understand gravitational effects on living things requires the removal of the very factor that determines life on Earth. Unfortunately, the required free-fall conditions that provide such conditions are limited to a few seconds unless earth-orbiting platforms are available. Therefore, attempts have been made to create conditions that simulate reduced gravity or gravity-free conditions ever since the gravity effects have been studied. Such conditions depend mostly on rotating devices (aka clinostats) that alter the gravity vector faster than the biological response time or create conditions that compensate sedimentation by fluid dynamics. Although several sophisticated, commercial instruments are available, they are unaffordable to most individual investigators. This article describes important considerations for the design and construction of low cost but versatile instruments that are sturdy, fully programmable, and affordable. This paper describes the development of a portable, easy to use, and standalone Continuous Passive Motion (CPM) device for ankle which intend to reduce the workload of physiotherapist due to increased number of patients, long term of treatments with Ilizarov Ring, and inconvenience of patients to attend to physiotherapy session frequently. The main elements in constructing CPM device for ankle were discussed in two parts: hardware and software. Hardware parts include the design of mechanical structure, and the specification of motors. While software parts are the programming codes using PIC18F4520. Expected results are the functionality of CPM device with user control.

A Wheatstone resistive bridge is modified, adding a capacitor and a switch. The switch allows alternatively the charge and discharge of the capacitor trough the first, respectively second resistor in the reference resistor branch. The command for the switch is a logical signal, with constant frequency and variable duty factor. The voltage on the capacitor is compared to the voltage generated by the bridge's measuring branch. The result is a square wave with its duty factor dependent on the unbalance of the bridge. The command signal duty factor is modified such a way to bring the comparator output duty factor to 0.5. This means that the bridge is balanced, and the duty factor of the command signal represents the transducer branch resistor ratio. When the transducer is located far away from the measuring point, long connection cables interfere the measurement both trough significant parasitic impedance and high noise susceptibility. The controller algorithm needs to allow, beside high resolution (precision) and reasonable balancing (measuring) time, noise attenuation and connection wires compensation. Adaptive algorithms are tested.
