The phase equalisation analyser is a microprocessor-based instrument which is used for measuring the phase response of sophisticated instrumentation tape recorders. This instrument adjusts the phase difference between the fundamental and third harmonic components of a complex input signal to the recorder such that the phase difference between them at the output of the recorder is zero. This project, completed while the author was working at Racal Recorders prior to commencing an MEng course at Cambridge University, won Caroline Gledhill the Engineering Council's 1992 'Young Engineer for Britain' award.

The paper describes the development of a rapid-response frequency-tracking instrument for use in the control of power systems. The microprocessor-based instrument employs a quasi-rate-of-change of frequency algorithm to minimise the delay in detecting abnormal frequency deviations without introducing erroneous fault indications, and is intended for use in the control of a flywheel energy storage scheme to replace conventional spinning reserve in power systems.
