microprogramming is a rapidly emerging technology for the implementation of the control section of modem digital processing systems. An assessment was made of this approach to control unit design three years ago in a series of papers derived from the Third Annual Workshop on microprogramming and published as a special issue of this TRANSACTIONS. This technology has matured in the ensuing three years, and an updated assessment has been prepared again as a special issue of this TRANSACTIONS based upon the papers presented at the Sixth Annual Workshop. The extent of realization of past predictions is reviewed and current trends are discussed. Finally, an attempt is made to assess future developments that may be expected to occur in the applications of microprogramming.

The purpose of this article is to provide a brief survey of current work in microprogramming and to assess future developments in microprogramming in terms of probable advances in semiconductor technology. The article is primarily directed toward readers who understand that "microprogram control" refers to implementation of the control function of a digital computer by means of control sequences that are stored in a memory rather than generated by a hardware control sequencer. The reader should also realize that the "machine" instructions of microprogrammed computers provide a means for organizing microinstructions into logically convenient modules.

All commercial computing products to date have employed complex instruction sets, which often required extensive, highly optimized microcode to achieve performance goals. In response, the Technical Committee on microprogramming was formed to support, mainly by sponsoring an annual workshop, the people who generated and debugged all manner of microcode. Since then, research have focused on exploiting parallelism at the instruction level. Microcoders, who were continually trying to achieve this very goal, were obviously well equipped to lead this type of parallelism research. This article discusses the commercial importance as well as the new research into fast execution.
