Fifth generation (5G) is a new generation mobile communication system developed for the growing demand for mobile communication. Channel coding is an indispensable part of most modern digital communication systems, for it can improve the transmission reliability and anti-interference. In order to meet the requirements of 5G communication, a dual threshold self-corrected minimumsum (DT-SCMS) algorithm for low-density parity-check (LDPC) decoders is proposed in this paper. Besides, an architecture of LDPC decoders is designed. By setting thresholds to judge the reliability of messages, the DT-SCMS algorithm erases unreliable messages, improving the decoding performance and efficiency. Simulation results show that the performance of DT-SCMS is better than that of SCMS. When the code rate is 1/3, the performance of DT-SCMS has been improved by 0.2 dB at the bit error rate of10-4compared with SCMS. In terms of the convergence, when the code rate is 2/3, the number of iterations of DT-SCMS can be reduced by up to 20.46% compared with SCMS, and the average proportion of reduction is 18.68%.

A low-density parity-check code (LDPC) is one of the classical error-correcting code for message transmission over noisy channel. It meets desired Shannon limit performance and is adopted as a data channel for the 5th generation new radio (5G NR) standard. This paper investigates the LDPC decoder by applying minimum-sum (MS) algorithm on the base matrix (BG1) of 5G standards. The performance of the decoder such as bit-error-rate (BER) and frame-error-rate (FER) has been improved when the number of iterations increased for larger code word. The variable node and check node architecture based on the MS algorithm with pipelining stage has been implemented in the field programmable gate array (FPGA). Based on the implementation results, it is observed that the LDPC decoder shows better performance in throughput and hardware resource usage (HUE) with some additional look-up-tables (LUT) and flip-flops (FF).Copyright (c) 2022 Elsevier Ltd. Underwater acoustic channel is a typical high bit error rate (BER) wireless channel. It is characterized by poor communication quality and high propagation delay. Based on comparing and analyzing the performances of RS code, convolutional code, Turbo code, and RA code, a RA coding based underwater acoustic channel coding scheme is proposed in this paper. The results of Matlab-based simulations show that the coding scheme can get a 100 times, or even more, performance improvement. In order to accelerate RA coding, aiming at the random mapping process of RA coding, based on the minimum sum algorithm, a look-up table based circuit design for fast iteration is introduced. Then, the experiments to test the RA coding are carried out in different channel environments, including underwater acoustic test platform and harbor. The results show that the coding scheme reduces the BER 38 times in the underwater acoustic test platform, increases the correct packet rate from 18.92% to 72.45% in the harbor(1).
