Adaptive large neighbourhood search for the multi-depot arc routing problem with flexible assignment of end depot and different arc types

This article introduces an advanced solution to optimize street sweeping operations by extending a multi-depot arc routing problem. The key enhancement involves flexible end depot assignments, where vehicles start and conclude shifts at designated depots. A notable constraint requires subsequent shifts to begin from the destination depot of the preceding shift. The problem involves servicing highway exclusively during night shifts, while other arc types can be addressed during both day and night. The objective is to identify optimal shifts meeting practical criteria while adhering to constraints like maximum shift duration. To address this, a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) model is presented. It aims to minimize the number of shifts and total travel time. Given the computational complexity of large instances, an adaptive large neighbourhood search (ALNS) metaheuristic was developed. This approach incorporates specialized operators that address unique attributes such as arc type and depot assignments, ensuring arcs are repositioned based on their type and proximity to depots. This tailored approach provides a distinct advantage over classical ALNS operators, as numerical tests indicate that the specialized operators are more efficient in comparison. The approach is evaluated on larger and a real-world instances, demonstrating notable performance in solution quality and computational efficiency.

Considering the circular economy for designing closed-loop supply chain under hybrid uncertainty: A robust scenario-based possibilistic-stochastic programming

Due to the significance of environmental and economic topics and limited resources, integrating Circular Economy (CE) principles is necessary for Supply Chain (SC) to improve sustainable competitive advantage. The integration of CE in SCs leads to a Closed-Loop Supply Chain Network Design (CLSCND) and a circular SC to achieve the economic, environmental, and social aspects of outputs and processes. On the other hand, the integration of CE in CLSCND faces hybrid uncertainties in different time horizons and scenarios due to the strategic and long-term nature of decisions. Due to the impact of random and cognitive uncertainties in the long term, it is necessary to consider these factors in the integration of CE in CLSCND. So, the aim of the present study is CLSCND to achieve the principles of CE and provide a robust scenario-based possibilistic-stochastic programming approach to consider cognitive and random uncertainties simultaneously. The contributions and innovations of the present study are the integration of CE in CLSCND, considering cognitive and random uncertainties at the same time, developing the Me criterion to achieve flexible solutions based on the convex combination of opinions of experts, and proposing the use of the absolute possible deviation to consider the possibilistic deviation. A case study was investigated for CLSCND in the paper industry to assess the presented approach, and the results indicated the accuracy and robustness of the solutions. The numerical simulation results demonstrated the appropriate performance of the proposed method, that the lowest average and standard deviation values of the constraints violation were 601 and 48, respectively, in the developed approach. Analytical findings show that implementing CE in the paper CLSCND provides insights for managers in demand and capacity constraint violations based on different risk levels. Static and Dynamic Routing, Fiber, Modulation Format, and Spectrum Allocation in Hybrid ULL Fiber-SSMF Elastic Optical Networks

Traditional standard single-mode fibers (SSMFs) are unable to satisfy the future long-distance and high-speed optical channel transmission requirement due to their relatively large signal losses. To address this issue, the ultra-low loss and large effective area (ULL) fibers are successfully manufactured and expected to deployed in the existing optical networks. For such ULL fiber deployment, network operators prefer adding ULL fibers to each link rather than replace existing SSMFs, resulting in a scenario where both of SSMF and ULL fiber coexist on the same link. In this paper, we investigated the routing, fiber, modulation format, and spectrum allocation (RFMSA) problem in the context of an elastic optical network (EON) where ULL fiber and SSMF coexisting on each link under both the static and dynamic traffic demands. We formulated this RFMSA problem as a node-arc based mixed integer linear programming (MILP) model and developed Spectrum Window Plane (SWP)-based heuristic algorithms based on different fiber selection strategies, including spectrum usage based (SU), optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) aware, ULL fiber first (UFF), and random strategies. Simulation results show that in the static traffic demand situation, the RFMSA algorithm based on the OSNR-aware (OA) strategy exhibits optimal performance, attaining a performance similar to that of the MILP model regarding the maximum number of frequency slots (FSs) used in the entire network. Moreover, in the dynamic traffic demand scenario, the SU strategy remarkably surpasses the other strategies in terms of the lightpath blocking probability.

Cooperative dispatch of demand response and stability constrained transfer capability for inter-connected power systems: A hybrid learning-aided method

Reverse peak conditions in generation and load profiles, as well as limiting total transfer capability (TTC) of power transmission inter-corridors, are critical inducements of renewable curtailment. Despite demand response (DR) incents loads to better complement renewable generations, it can in turn aggravate hindrance of renewable energies' exporting consumption. To solve this issue, spatiotemporal cooperation between DR and TTC must be involved. Further challenge relates to complicated interaction between price-incentive DR and stability constrained TTC. A hybrid learning-aided cooperative dispatch method is thus proposed. Firstly, to mitigate overconservative power transfer and reduce the high-dimensional dynamic security bounds, a neural network is introduced to fast track dynamic TTC varying with the dispatch model. It is then reformulated as mixed integer linear programming (MILP) and seamlessly integrated into the optimization process along with price-based DRs. At last, to help fast approach optimum of the DR-TTC-cooperative model, a physics-regularized temporal graph convolutional network is utilized to warmly initialize units' on/off status, DRs and energy storages' active states, and auxiliary integer variables introduced from MILP-reformed TTC estimator as well. Case studies on the modified IEEE 39-bus system verify that our method outperforms traditional method regarding security adherence and efficiency, and reveal the importance of DR and TTC's cooperation in releasing renewable consumption latency.

A Probabilistic Hesitant Fuzzy Multi-Criteria Decision-Making Method Based on CSOGRMILP and Borda-CoCoSo

This paper proposes a multi-criteria decision-making method based on CSOGRMILP and Borda-CoCoSo in a probabilistic hesitant fuzzy environment. In this method, we utilize a probabilistic hesitant fuzzy scoring function to process the probabilistic hesitant fuzzy information, obtaining a processed decision matrix. Then, based on the processed decision matrix, we propose the "Combined Subjective-Objective, Gray Relational Analysis, mixed integer linear programming" (CSOGRMILP) method to determine the weights of decision criteria. Next, an improved method called Borda-CoCoSo is proposed for ranking solutions based on the Borda rule modification of the Combined Comprise Solution (CoCoSo) method. Finally, a case study on the selection of degradable dynamic plastic products was used to validate the proposed method. In the comparative analysis, we compare the proposed method with traditional methods. This further validates the rationality of the Borda-CoCoSo method. Additionally, we compare CSOGRMILP with EWM (Entropy Weight Method), MEREC (MEthod based on the Removal Effects of Criteria), CRITIC (CRiteria Importance Through Inter-criteria Correlation), and ROSOSD (The Robustness, Correlation, and Standard Deviation). The comparison results indicate that CSOGRMILP demonstrates better stability (0.046) and the best consistency (96.43%).

The Exchange Attack and the Mixture Differential Attack Revisited: From the Perspective of Automatic Evaluation

Recent results show that the differential properties within quadruples boom as a new inspiration in cryptanalysis of Advanced Encryption Standard(AES)-like constructions. These methods include the exchange attack proposed in Asiacrypt'19, the mixture differential attack proposed in To SC'18, etc., where the essential properties are obtained by manually scrutinizing the structures of the AES-like constructions. This paper presents a novel framework and an automatic tool based on mixed integer linear programming to search for mixture differential distinguishers for general constructions. This framework considers what equality patterns among quadruples can make a distinguisher and traces how the patterns propagate through cipher components with accurate probability *** this tool, a 5-round AES distinguishing attack with lower complexity and more 6-round distinguishing attacks in the chosen plaintext scenarios are deduced. We prove that no exchange-type or mixture differential distinguisher exists for 7 and above rounds AES if the details of the Sbox and Mix Columns matrix are not taken into account.

A decision support system for optimised industrial water management

Water scarcity and the low quality of wastewater produced in industrial applications present significant challenges, particularly in managing fresh water intake and reusing residual quantities. These issues affect various industries, compelling plant owners and managers to optimise water resources within their process networks. To address this cross-sector business requirement, we propose a Decision Support System (DSS) designed to capture key network components, such as inlet streams, processes, and outlet streams. Data provided to the DSS are exploited by an optimisation module, which supports both network design and operational decisions. This module is coupled with a generic mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) model, which is linearised into a compact mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) formulation capable of delivering fast optimal solutions across various network designs and input parameterisations. Additionally, a Constraint programming (CP) approach is incorporated to handle nonlinear expressions through straightforward modelling. This state-ofthe-art generalised framework enables broad applicability across a wide range of real-world scenarios, setting it apart from the conventional reliance on customised solutions designed for specific use cases. The proposed framework was tested on 500 synthetic data instances inspired by historical data from three case studies. The obtained results confirm the validity, computational competence and practical impact of our approach both among their operational and network design phases, demonstrating significant improvements over current practices. Notably, the proposed approach achieved a 17.6% reduction in freshwater intake in a chemical industry case and facilitated the reuse of nearly 90% of wastewater in an oil refinery case.

A prospective approach to the optimal deployment of a hydrogen supply chain for sustainable mobility in island territories: Application to Corsica

This study develops a framework for designing hydrogen supply chains (HSC) in island territories using mixed integer linear programming (MILP) with a multi-period approach. The framework minimizes system costs, greenhouse gas emissions, and a risk-based index. Corsica is used as a case study, with a Geographic Information System (GIS) identifying hydrogen demand regions and potential sites for production, storage, and distribution. The results provide an optimal HSC configuration for 2050, specifying the size, location, and technology while accounting for techno-economic factors. This work integrates the unique geographical characteristics of islands using a GIS-based approach, incorporates technology readiness levels, and utilizes renewable electricity from neighboring regions. The model proposes decentralized configurations that avoid hydrogen transport between grids, achieving a levelized cost of hydrogen (LCOH) of 8.54/kg. This approach offers insight into future options and incentive mechanisms to support the development of hydrogen economies in isolated territories.

A Coordination Optimization for Train Operation and Energy Infrastructure Control in a Metro System

An advanced metro system becomes imperative towards efficient and sustainable operations with the rapid growth of urban construction. As the essential factors to implement transport sustainability, a referred energy-efficient trajectory and an energy-saving infrastructure for train operations could guide trains running through with conquering complicated environmental impacts and help to control the energy flows in traction processes. Thus, we attempt to discover the optimal way of adapting to the track changes and resistances in train running and evaluate the energy exchanges with Energy Storage System (ESS) in an extended power supply network. In this study, we firstly optimize a train trajectory with consideration of air and track resistances by using a modified Q-Learning (QL) method. Secondly, for coordinated application between ESS and trains, an integration module is designed by implanting train trajectories. Specifically, based on the working properties of ESS, a deceleration-acceleration time separation is matched for supplementing the charging/discharging times of the devices. The space-time presentation is introduced to portray train running phases for connections with control processes of ESS. Then, a mixed integer linear programming (MILP) model is proposed for minimizing deceleration-acceleration overlaps. A Tabu Search (TS) algorithm is introduced to solve such complex problems. Finally, a numerical test is conducted to demonstrate the feasibility of the model in Beijing, China.

Runway assignment optimisation model for Istanbul Airport considering multiple parallel runway operations

The aviation industry has rapidly developed in recent years. Due to the increased number of flight operations, managing air traffic has become essential. The air traffic management system aims to reduce the air traffic control workload and use existing resources more efficiently. This study proposed a new mixed integer linear programming model to minimise the total fuel consumption during taxi operations for the runway assignment problem, comparing the actual Istanbul Airport runway assignment data. The average taxi times are calculated using the 30,000-flight operations data for each arrival and departure taxi route. Also, 47 different aircraft types are obtained using the data for the fuel consumption calculation. The International Civil. Aviation Organisation (IACO) aircraft engine emissions databank provides the fuel consumption values for each aircraft according to engine type. This approach allows our model to calculate more realistic fuel consumption for taxi operations, as each aircraft engine type has a different fuel consumption value. The proposed model is implemented at Istanbul Airport, the busiest airport in Turkey, where multiple parallel runway operations are applied. The results showed that the proposed model reduced total fuel consumption for taxi operations between 6.6% and 14.4% compared to the actual Istanbul Airport runway assignment data.
