Enhancing expansion of rooftop PV systems through mixed integer linear programming and Public Tender Procedures

Concerning the growth rate in Renewable Energy share, especially in the EU, it is fact that Rooftop PV systems have a significant role to play. Nevertheless, it is also accepted that with current policies, schemes and scientific methods, today's Renewable Energy growth rate is still far from the desired one. Based on that, this study proposes a novel integration of a mixed-integer linear programming based model in a Public Tender Procedure, which enables the bulk installation and thus, the rapid expansion of Rooftop PV systems, in a least-cost manner. The main objective and contribution of this paper is to provide an economic solution to interested Public Bodies for utilizing the rapid growth of rooftop PV systems through novel mechanisms and hence, to better achieve the desired Renewable Energy targets. To further highlight the capabilities of the proposed method, the results from a real-life project, showed that the bulk installation of PV systems, in 404 public schools with a total PV capacity of 4.8 MWp, can be realized at an optimum cost. The main achievements are: (i) high-level competition, due to the ability of the proposed model to select multiple PV Installers, (ii) a 35% lower project cost compared to the initial estimated budget and (iii) a significantly lower unit cost of about 0.7 million euro/MWp, compared to about 0.91 and 1.54 million euro/MWp obtained from other similar projects. Finally, the outcomes of the proposed MILP model are validated by those obtained from an exhaustive optimal solution search procedure. (c) 2022 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Microgrid with distributed energy resources and energy storage system provides sustainability and resiliency. In this research, residential community microgrid is examined with responsive loads that create flexible generation-demand model. An optimization algorithm using mixed integer linear programming (MILP) has been formulated to minimize the operating cost and emission of dispatchable power generation, with the help of demand response. Usually, in renewable energy-based grid-connected microgrid, the batteries are managed under partial state of charge (SoC) conditions due to the limit of power imported from grid. The proposed MILP model ensures full SoC operation and safe charging or discharging dynamics of the battery in order to enhance its lifespan. Moreover, the day-ahead scheduling of household appliances is carried out using a novel hybrid knapsack method, which combines binary and fractional knapsack algorithms. An electric vehicle battery is considered as a flexible power load, which offers an unique way of approach in scheduling of appliances. The results confirm that the power demanded by the appliances is fulfilled at the user-specified hour for maximum comfort along with minimum operating cost of microgrid. Generic algebraic modeling system (GAMS) tool is used to run the proposed algorithms.

Unmanned systems swarm task allocation is one of the key issues of unmanned systems collaborative control. Aiming at the multiple objectives and multiple constraints task allocation issue of unmanned systems swarm, under the multi-constrained conditions of comprehensively considering the benefits of unmanned systems swarm against multiple targets, weapon costs, disabling costs, time costs and energy costs, taking the largest net income, the smallest number of unmanned systems dispatched, and the least number of weapons carried by unmanned systems as the optimization goals respectively, the mathematical models of multi-constrained task allocation based on mixed integer linear programming is established. The Cplex solver is used to solve the specific examples. And the calculation results are analyzed. The results show that the task allocation model based on "platform-weapon-target" can effectively solve the assignment issue of multi-constraint unmanned system swarm.

The integration of hybrid energy systems (HES) into the electric power grid is gaining traction due to the need of establishing a clean and sustainable energy system for satisfying the increasing load demand. Such integration enables integration of renewable energy sources in the form of HES that is scalable from small as well as large-scale integration. Nevertheless, the commonly preferred renewable energy sources (RESs), such as, solar and wind energy have significantly limited economic feasibility owing to their unpredictability and intermittency. Energy storage systems (ESSs) are among the key solutions to mitigate the impact of variable renewable energy sources on the grid by acting as an energy buffer. In this paper, a multiperiod optimization technique is formulated for the appropriate scheduling of ESSs in a HES that acts as a model of a residential district consisting of several houses with installed PV systems and connections to the main electricity grid. To further verify the method's effectiveness, the results are obtained for both summer and winter season scenarios.

In this paper we analyze different mixed integer linear programming (MILP) models in order to produce 1D and 3D Spread-Out Bragg peaks (SOBP) for protons in water. Our techniques do not use much computational resources;in particular, all our experiments have been performed by a standard personal computer. As main result we give the proof of concept that the techniques that we use to create parameterized uniform SOBP can be fruitfully used in Treatment Planning Systems (TPS) for Intensity Modulated Proton Therapy (IMPT). As technical result we show, for the first time to our best knowledge, that there is a trade-off between the minimum number of energies (or layers) to be used to have a SOBP peak within a uniformity tolerance parameter Dt and the same parameter Dt. Minimizing the number of energies also has the advantage of reducing the delivery time using the facilities in operation nowadays.

A large part of the services provided on the Internet resides in virtualized environments of 'cloud' providers, whose IT infrastructures adopt, for the most part, the containers virtualization technique to house the various applications that must run independently and isolated. The management of such containers predominantly adopts the Kubernetes solution, whose standard algorithm for allocating containers on physical machines (nodes) is not capable of optimizing the cost/performance ratio of the cloud environment. As a solution to this problem, this work proposes a mixed integer linear programming approach based on the Capacitated Facility Location Problem to optimize the distribution of containers in nodes of a Kubernetes cluster, taking into account the cost of installing a new node, the history of failures of the nodes in operation and the consumption of resources by each application running in a container. The experimental results show that the proposed approach significantly improves the performance of Kubernetes cluster concerning the conventional scheduling strategy while ensuring the efficient execution of applications demands. © 2023 IEEE.

With the ever growing number of technologies that interact with the grid, optimization and control strategies become critical to ensure the quality of service without disruption. This work analyses the application of two operational planning optimization methods, mixed integer linear programming (MILP) and Hybrid-adaptive Differential Evolution with decay function (HyDE-DF) metaheuristic, applied to an Energy Community including generation, consumption flexibility, energy storage systems, electric vehicles with vehicle-to-grid capability and the electricity exchange with the main network, with the aim of minimizing operation costs. Throughout this work, differences between approaches are highlighted, as well as considerations for each method to help convergence and improve solution quality. Both methods achieve comparable operation costs, 159.3330 and 153.4883 for MILP and HyDE-DF, respectively. © 2023 European Union.

This paper presents two mixed integer linear programming (MILP) models that extend two basic Flow Shop Scheduling problems: Fm/prmu/Cmax and Fm/block/Cmax. This extension incorporates the concept of an overall demand plan for types of jobs or products. After using an example to illustrate the new problems under study, we evaluated the new models and analyzed their behaviors when applied to instances found in the literature and industrial instances of a case study from Nissan's plant in Barcelona. CPLEX solver was used as a solution tool and obtained acceptable results, allowing us to conclude that MILP can be used as a method for solving Flow Shop Scheduling problems with an overall demand plan.

China has become the world second largest energy consumer, and IEA predicted that its primary energy demand will double from 2025 to 2030. Offshore wind power construction is difficult and carries high risk. It is extremely difficult to control the cost, of which the construction period is the biggest variable. As to meet the requirements of cost reduction and efficiency increase in the coming era of flat rate, the construction procedures, primary vessels, and equipment need to be properly planned prior to the project startup. For this purpose, an algorithm based on mixed integer linear programming (MILP) for accurately calculating weather window and construction efficiency of offshore wind power was firstly proposed in this study, which comprehensively takes the complex construction procedures, duration of each link and environmental restrictions into account. Focusing on the offshore seas of Fujian province, utilizing the 1-hour hindcast wind and wave data respectively from the validated reanalysis wind field and SWAN model with a time span of 25 years (1996-2020), the weather window and construction efficiency for monopile foundation construction and offshore wind turbine installation were evaluated both on spatial and temporal scope. With respects to the specific wind farms that will be constructed, the detailed analysis and construction suggestions were provided.

Bridging mixed integer linear programming for truss topology optimization and additive manufacturing

One crucial advantage of additive manufacturing regarding the optimization of lattice structures is that there is a reduction in manufacturing constraints compared to classical manufacturing methods. To make full use of these advantages and to exploit the resulting potential, it is necessary that lattice structures are designed using optimization. Against this backdrop, two mixed integer programs are developed in order to use the methods of mathematical optimization in the context of topology optimization on the basis of a fitted ground structure method. In addition, an algorithm driven product design process is presented to systematically combine the areas of mathematical optimization, computer aided design, finite element analysis and additive manufacturing. Our developed computer aided design tool serves as an interface between state-of-the-art mathematical solvers and computer aided design software and is used for the generation of design data based on optimization results. The first mixed integer program focuses on powder-based additive manufacturing, including a preprocessing that allows a multi-material topology optimization. The second mixed integer program generates support-free lattice structures for additive manufacturing processes usually depending on support structures, by considering geometry-based design rules for inclined and support-free cylinders and assumptions for location and orientation of parts within a build volume. The problem to strengthen a lattice structure by local thickening or beam addition or both, with the objective function to minimize costs, is modeled. In doing so, post-processing is excluded. An optimization of a static area load with a practice-oriented number of connection nodes and beams was manufactured using the powder-based additive manufacturing system EOS INT P760.
