In this paper, we propose a new formulation for solving the channel assignment problem for Multi-cell WLANs as a mixed integer linear programming (MILP) problem. The objective is to minimize the total interference seen by all Access Points (APs). The main advantage of the proposed algorithm is that it provides a global solution and at the same time guarantees non-overlapping channel assignment. The proposed channel assignment formulation can be used for different topologies of WLAN as demonstrated in the simulation. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms the pick-first greedy algorithm and the single channel assignment method. The proposed channel assignment technique reduces the total interference at all APs which leads to an improved throughput.

The investment of connecting charging stations into distribution networks should be considered in the optimal planning of charging stations for electric vehicles (EVs). This paper proposes a mathematical model for multistage distribution network expansion planning taking optimal siting and sizing of EV charging stations into account. In the proposed model, the capacity of existing substations can be increased, existing network feeders can be replaced with wider section feeders, new feeders and new charging stations can be built. Network security constraints are considered. A new constraint is formulated to guarantee the topology of the obtained distribution network is radial. Numerical results indicate that the proposed method can allocate charging capacity among candidate charging station sites optimally, and the total investment and operating cost of the distribution network is reduced.

In this study, we consider the minimum power broadcasting problem in wireless actuator networks. We attack the problem with a method-the shared incumbent environment-that executes two algorithms in parallel: a mathematical programming approach and a simulated annealing approach. According to the shared incumbent environment paradigm, when an incumbent solution is found by one method, the other method is notified and profits from the information received. Experimental results show that the shared incumbent environment lead to results which are better than those of the two algorithms combined in it taken singularly.

Some Renewable Energy Sources (RES), such as wind and solar, produce power intermittently according to the weather conditions rather than to the power demanded. Energy Storage Systems (ESS) may be used to mitigate the intermittent generation from RES and to increase the quality of power supply. This study aims to find the relationship between the generation from RES and the needed amount of ESS. An autonomous microgrid has been analyzed in which a part of electricity demanded during one year is generated by Wind Turbines and Photovoltaic plants (PV), while the remaining part is produced by fuel based generators. An intelligent Energy Management System (EMS) optimally schedules the fuel based generators according to the load demanded, the weather conditions and to the electricity generation costs. The optimal storage needed to balance the system for different scenarios were investigated and results of this investigation are shown and discussed in this paper.

Wireless Mesh Networks (WMNs) are designed to provide broadband wireless services;however, capacities of WMNs are fundamentally limited in bandwidth because of the scarcity of RF spectral resources. A solution is to design a WMN using multiple wireless technologies. Since the optical spectrum remains unlicensed and under-utilized, we propose to augment RF WMNs with free space optical (FSO) systems. FSO links do not interfere with RF links and have higher capacity than RF links. In this paper, we study the throughput improvement of FSO-augmented RF WMNs. We address two questions. First, given a fixed number of FSO links, where should we install them to achieve the maximum improvement of network throughput for given traffic demands? Second, how do we route and schedule the flows in the hybrid FSO/RF network to achieve this throughput? We jointly formulate the above problems as one mixed integer linear programming problem. The results show that the throughput of the network increases dramatically by properly allocating FSO links. We also provide a computationally efficient algorithm to evaluate upper and lower bounds on the throughput of this hybrid FSO/RF network. The network administrator can use these bounds to determine the tradeoff between the number of FSO links (which are expensive) and the throughput improvement.

Energy consumption of communication networks is growing very fast due to the rapidly increasing traffic demand. Consequently, design of green communication networks gained a lot of attention. In this paper we focus on optical Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) networks, able to support this growing traffic demand. Several energy-aware routing and wavelength assignment (EA-RWA) techniques have been proposed for WDM networks in order to minimize their operational cost. These techniques aim at minimizing the number of active links by packing the traffic as much as possible, thus avoiding the use of lightly loaded links. As a result, EA-RWA techniques may lead to longer routes and to a high utilization on some specific links. This has a detrimental effect on the signal quality of the optical connections, i.e., lightpaths. In this study we quantify the impact of power consumption minimization on the optical signal quality. and address this problem by proposing a combined impairment and energy-aware RWA (IEA-RWA) approach. Towards this goal we developed a complete mathematical model that incorporates both linear and non-linear physical impairments together with an energy efficiency objective. The IEA-RWA problem is formulized as a mixed integer linear programming (MILP) model where both energy efficiency and signal quality considerations are jointly optimized. By comparing the proposed IEA-RWA approach with existing RWA (IA-RWA and EA-RWA) schemes, we demonstrate that our solution allows for a reduction of energy consumption close to the one obtained by EA-RWA approaches, while still guaranteeing a sufficient level of the optical signal quality.

A multi-stage software router overcomes scalability issues related to a single, PC-based, software router by introducing parallel forwarding paths. However, since the architecture includes different internal components, energy inefficiency at low loads may arise if the multi-stage internal architecture does not adapt to currently offered traffic. This paper presents an energy-saving scheme to improve energy efficiency of the multi-stage router architecture by focusing on the back-end stage and sizing it to the offered load to reduce energy needs. The problem is defined as a mixed integer linear programming model, shown to be NP-hard. We tackle the scalability issues of the optimal problem by defining a two-step heuristic which takes advantage of existing BIN PACKING algorithms. Our results shows that the two-step solution is within 10% relative error with respect to the optimal solution for different realistic scenarios.

A mixed-integer linear programming model for bulk grain blending and shipping

This paper addresses a blending and shipping problem faced by a company that manages a wheat supply chain. The problem involves the delivery of bulk products from loading ports to destination ports, which may be served by different vessel types. Since the products demanded by customers are mainly exported in bulk to overseas customers, the shipment planning is of great economic importance. The problem is formulated as a mixed-integer linear programming model. The objective function seeks to minimize the total cost including the blending, loading, transportation and inventory costs. Constraints on the system include blending and demand requirements, availability of original and blended products;as well as blending, loading, draft and vessel capacity restrictions. When solved, the model produces: (1) the quantity of each original product to be used to make blended products, (2) the quantity of each product to be loaded at each port and to be transported from each port to each customer, and (3) the number of vessels of each type to be hired in each time period. Numerical results are presented to demonstrate the feasibility of the real world bulk grain blending and shipping model. (C) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

This article presents a platform, which aims at energy savings in residential neighborhoods via coordination of energy generation and consumption. The platform includes hardware infrastructure and service oriented information system. While an overview of the platform is given, the energy management services are described in more detail. Assessment of platform robustness, flexibility and scalability is provided and demonstrated on examples.

A vast variety of feature selection methods have been proposed according to different metrics, such as information gain, entropy, chi-square test, t-test. Yet when applied to multi-class classification task, these methods generally suffer the “siren pitfall” of a surplus of predictive features for some classes while lack of predictive features for the remaining classes. A number of solutions to the “siren pitfall” have been proposed, yet there are still problems with these methods. For example, the selected features by “randomized feature set” method are not re-configurable; the “rand-robin” method and the “round-robin” method may miss some important features whenever the one v.s. others binary partition does not work; the computation cost of the wrapper's method is rather high. In this paper, we propose an adaptive feature selection method for multi-class classification task. With our method, the “siren pitfall” could be avoided, the selected features could be reproduced, the feature selection scheme does not rely on any prior knowledge, and the corresponding computation cost is low. Experimental results indicate the effectiveness of our adaptive feature selection method.
