Optimisation of ship-based CO2 transport chains from Southern Europe to the North Sea

Among the technologies for climate change mitigation, carbon capture and storage is considered as a technically and economically viable option to reduce CO2 emissions from hard-to-abate industrial sectors. When it comes to CO2 logistics, ship-based chains are emerging as an attractive alternative to other CO2 transport modes (e.g., pipelines), as these could exhibit lower operational risk, higher infrastructural flexibility, and lower costs. This work provides insights into the cost of optimal ship-based CO2 transport chains at a European level, by proposing a detailed economic model of CO2 transport by ship, including all the echelons of the infrastructure (i.e., liquefaction, buffer storage, loading, ship, conditioning, and unloading). The final aim is to determine the minimum CO2 transport cost from Southern Europe to North Sea sequestration. Different unloading scenarios (port-to-port, port-to-floating storage and injection, and port-to-direct offshore unloading) and carbon reduction targets are investigated. The minimum unitary transport cost is 26 euro/t of CO2 for transporting 103 Mt/y.

This paper addresses the problem of planning the motion of a mobile robot that has to visit some points of interest, each point having a specific time interval in which it can be reached. The robot is omnidirectional and it evolves with constant speed in an environment cluttered with polygonal obstacles. In the case of no obstacles, the problem would be a Travelling Salesman Problem with Time Window (TSPTW) constraints. Our solution is innovative by enabling obstacles for TSPTW scenarios, and it accomplishes this by coupling visibility graphs, graph reduction and mathematical programming. The method first constructs a visibility graph based on the obstacles and points to be visited, and then it maps this graph to another graph whose nodes correspond only to robot's initial position and points of interest. Finally, a TSPTW problem is solved on the reduced graph by using a mixed integer linear programming (MILP) mathematical formulation, and the solution is projected to the initial environment. The solution development is accompanied by illustrative numerical simulations.

Additional electricity meters behind the grid access point can improve understanding of energy consumption patterns and thus, adjust consumption behavior. For this study, smart meters were installed in three hostels, out of which two are analyzed further in this paper. Starting from an onsite inspection, all appliances were assigned to reasonable groups for submetering. Based on data for the year 2021, the sites are characterized according to the sub-metering concept. In addition, load profiles for type-days are derived, which allows to establish a baseload during COVID lockdown and compare it to consumption patterns for normal occupation. In the prescriptive part, the demand profiles are analyzed regarding their economic potential for load shifting. Consumption data for one week with normal occupation is used as input for techno-economic modeling. The mixed-integer model minimizes electricity purchasing costs for different scenarios including dynamic tariffs and onsite generation from photovoltaics.

The integration energy systems has been recognized as a promising approach to curbing carbon emissions. However, energy coupling intricacies render ensuring the reliability of such systems a challenging task. Demand response, as a load-side regulation mechanism, presents a viable solution to bolster the operation of energy systems. In this research, we establish a comprehensive scheduling model for an energy system, which considers both reliability and economy. The model incorporates a carbon capture device to mitigate the carbon emissions of the system. We also conduct probabilistic modelling of the fan to simulate its output, and assess the reliability of the system by introducing different fault types. Furthermore, we investigate the effects of integrated demand response (IDR) on the reliability of the system. Our results demonstrate that IDR effectively mitigates energy supply gaps and improves the reliability of the system. The study underscores the pivotal role of comprehensive approaches that integrate multiple energy resources towards a sustainable energy future.

The concept of positive energy districts (PED) encompasses a range of policies and strategies in response to climate protection targets in urban areas. Due to the limited potential of renewable energy in urban neighborhoods, broader definitions of PED are proposed that allow for energy exchange through the grid infrastructure. This study evaluates demand side management in combination with a virtual power plant (VPP) to assess the impact on the design of PED. In particular, the optimal customer behavior in response to flexible electricity tariffs is analyzed. A techno-economic energy system model is proposed for an urban area in Germany that optimizes the customer cost and the VPP's margin. This includes electrical energy generation, storage, demand, and access to the short-term electricity market. Based on economic analysis, a dynamic market-based tariff allows the VPP to maximize profit margins. Consumers benefit when the local balances of renewable energy supply and demand are integrated into the dynamic tariff.

Electric vehicles (EVs) are widely used in urban last-mile logistics. This paper addresses a two-echelon electric vehicle routing problem with time windows (2E-EVRPTW). Traditional vehicles, which depart from a single depot, are operated on the first echelon to serve intermediate satellite stations, while EVs depart from these satellite stations to deliver products to customers. Due to the limited battery capacity of EVs, access to charging stations needs to be considered in the route. This study aims to find the optimal routes in both echelons such that the total transportation costs, including vehicle cost, driving cost, charging cost, and carbon emissions cost, are minimized. We propose a mixed-integer linear program for the 2E-EVRPTW, which is solved directly by a commercial solver CPLEX. To solve this NP-hard problem, we develop adaptive large neighborhood search-based heuristic method. Results show that the proposed method can find high-quality solutions in reasonable CPU time.

With the growing awareness of environmental issues globally, there is a shift towards converting fossil energy systems into multi-energy systems powered by renewable energy resources. Establishing multi-energy systems in active distribution networks is considered an efficient approach to reducing carbon emissions, which in turn demands the development of innovative planning methodologies to ensure their cost-effectiveness and reliability. This paper establishes a novel mixed integer linear model to optimize the capacity allocation, equipment selection, placement, and corresponding operation plan for the active distribution networks incorporating multi-energy microgrids and demand response. Compared with traditional static reserve constraints for N-1 generator contingency, we propose a set of novel linear equations to dynamically allocate reserve in the active distribution network, which greatly reduces the computation time and improves the robustness against potential generator failure. Several case studies demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed optimal planning model and give valuable insights into the low-carbon design for multi-energy systems in active distribution networks.

The surgical services provided in the operating rooms of the hospital are an essential part of the healthcare system. These services are usually life-threatening and time-sensitive, and require highly trained surgeons and staff, as well as the latest medical equipment. Furthermore, because of the high cost of these resources, hospitals can have only a limited number of operating rooms and staff members. Thus, it is crucial to optimize various aspects of operating room functions to maximize overall utilization. This survey summarizes various optimization models proposed in the literature for such problems faced in operating rooms. The goal of this work is to provide researchers with a guide for further research in the field. Methods: This survey includes articles from Pubmed, since 2010. The search queries were related to the terms scheduling operating room, optimization model, and queuing. More than 400 articles were found, and the authors filtered the articles based on their relevance to this survey. The analysis found that a) the studies are usually very specific to optimizing a particular problem related to the operating room, b) datasets are not available in the literature and it is difficult to conduct comparative analysis, similarly c) the source code is not available on publicly available repositories like GitHub, and d) it is difficult to replicate the studies and establish benchmarks.

A production battery in the oil industry is a set of equipment and facilities used in the initial stages of crude oil processing at an oilfield. At various stages of operation, it may be necessary to restrict or increase its processing capacity, meaning that the gross volume to be received must be adjusted. In remote areas where connectivity and infrastructure may be limited, it is necessary for an operator to approach the well in person to make manual adjustments directly to the pumping system. Proper planning of the well route for adjusting regimes directly impacts the operating costs of the oilfield. In this work in progress, a mixed integer linear programming model for this problem is proposed, by considering the production, operation, and modification restrictions of the pumping regime of each well. Preliminary results are presented, which show that the model can be used in practice.
