In the era of Artificial intelligence (AI), internet data centers (IDCs) play a crucial role in supporting the global information infrastructure. However, large language model (LLM) training consumes a lot of energy, which poses unique challenges to IDC, especially in power emergencies. In order to prevent power outages from causing huge economic losses to IDC, a good energy management system is essential. In this study, we propose a new mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) model of an IDC during an electricity emergency to maximize the profit while minimize operation cost. On power side, we considered renewable energy, traditional thermal power generators, uninterruptible power supply (UPS), heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system. On IT job scheduling side, we allow jobs to be done, held, discarded and transferred to other IDC. Finally, we analyze and visualize the computational results and verify the correctness of the proposed model.

In the pursuit of reducing carbon emissions, the integration of renewable energy into society's energy portfolio plays a crucial role despite challenges tied to their inherent unpredictability and seasonal variations. Hydrogen, as a mean of storing and transporting renewable energy becomes crucial in addressing these challenges. Notwithstanding its potential, the misalignment of cost-competitive hydrogen production hubs with demand centers calls for a thorough examination of global hydrogen distribution. The versatility of hydrogen transportation (e.g., pipelines, ships, trucks) and various forms like compressed hydrogen, liquid hydrogen, ammonia, and liquid organic hydrogen carriers (LOHC) adds complexity to designing an economically efficient hydrogen supply chain (HSC). Addressing previous scholarly limitations focused on existing technologies, this study advocates for a superstructure-based modeling approach for HSC that includes promising technologies. Through a case study involving a production site in the Middle East and a demand site in Texas, a dedicated HSC superstructure network is formulated, facilitating the identification of cost-effective hydrogen supply pathways using mixed integer linear programming Ultimately, this effort aims to establish a comprehensive framework to discern the most sustainable and financially viable technologies, identifying the optimal configuration within the HSC. Notch-based speed trajectory optimisation for high-speed railway automatic train operation

Automatic train operation (ATO) systems are fast becoming one of the key components of the intelligent high-speed railway (HSR). Designing an effective optimal speed trajectory for ATO is critical to guide the high-speed train (HST) to operate with high service quality in a more energy-efficient way. In many advanced HSR systems, the traction/braking systems would provide multiple notches to satisfy the traction/braking demands. This paper modelled the applied force as a controlled variable based on the selection of notch to realise a notch-based train speed trajectory optimisation model to be solved by mixed integer linear programming (MILP). A notch selection model with flexible vertical relaxation was proposed to allow the traction/braking efforts to change dynamically along with the selected notch by introducing a series of binary variables. Two case studies were proposed in this paper where Case study 1 was conducted to investigate the impact of the dynamic notch selection on train operations, and the optimal result indicates that the applied force can be flexibly adjusted corresponding to different notches following a similar operation sequence determined by optimal train control theory. Moreover, in addition to the maximum traction/braking notches and coasting, medium notches with appropriate vertical relaxation would be applied in accordance with the specific traction/braking demands to make the model feasible. In Case study 2, a comprehensive numerical example with the parameters of CRH380AL HST demonstrates the robustness of the model to deal with the varying speed limit and gradient in a real-world scenario. The notch-based model is able to obtain a more realistic optimal strategy containing dynamic notch selection and speed trajectory with an increase (1.622%) in energy consumption by comparing the results of the proposed model and the non-notch model.

Influence of Inherent Characteristic of PV Plants in Risk-Based Stochastic Dynamic Substation Expansion Planning Under MILP Framework

A suitable probabilistic scenario set of load demand and natural characteristics of renewable energy is becoming a crucial issue in power system planning studies. Properly addressing the impact of potentially thousands of residential PV plants on the resilience and reliability needs of substations necessitates the representation of inherent relations between photovoltaics and the load throughout the long-term planning period. The optimal planning of substation expansions is achievable through proper modeling of input parameters which describes the characteristics of the service areas. In this paper, the co-existence of PV plants and the load in a service area under three different states such as daytime with clear-sky and no-fault, daytime with abnormal events, and nighttime are incorporated into the stochastic dynamic optimization problem by using scenario-based approach. The scenario tree of the problem is branched from three different bases simultaneously instead of only one as in conventional approach. This paper also combines the risk-constrained stochastic dynamic SEP problem and mixed integer linear programming (MILP) framework under one roof. The comparison between integrating inherent characteristics of PV plants with and without considering abnormal events into the optimization is performed to show the impact of suitable probabilistic model on dynamic nature of investment decisions.

Part-grouping and build-scheduling with sequence-dependent setup time to minimize the makespan for non-identical parallel additive manufacturing machines

This paper addresses a part-grouping and build-scheduling problem for an additive manufacturing process with non-identical parallel additive manufacturing machines. Parts with the same material can be simultaneously manufactured as a build in the machine. The total areas of parts in the build cannot exceed the area capacity of the machine. Each machine has different heights in a build area. The maximum height of parts in the build is less than or equal to the height of each machine in the build area. The processing time of each build is the maximum processing time of parts belonging to the build. When the material is changed in each machine, the setup time occurs. The objective function is minimizing the makespan. To find optimal and near-optimal solutions for the problem, a mixed integer linear programming model and three meta-heuristic algorithms are presented. For small problem instances, the performance of three meta-heuristic algorithms is compared with the optimal value obtained mixed integer linear programming model. For large problem instances, the performance of three meta-heuristic algorithms is compared to each other.

This paper presents exact and approximate methods for constructing daily walking tours for parking enforcement officers the Parking Enforcement Routing Problem (PERP), a problem faced by EMEL, a municipal company that manages parking in Lisbon. Parking Enforcement Officers (PEO) must ensure that the users of the street parking lots pay the corresponding fee, and that they also comply with the parking rules imposed by the legislation in force. The duration of the tours must be compatible with the PEO daily work schedules. A street cannot be supervised more than once in consecutive hours, nor supervised simultaneously by two PEOs. The PERP is a new generalisation of an Arc Routing Problem with profits aiming to maximise the total criticality, a concept defined to represent the need for enforcement of the street segments, related to the number of vehicles parked in transgression. Moreover, parking rules lead to some specificities regarding the underlying network, which needs to be built with additional unusual characteristics. A flow-based mixed integer linear programming model and heuristics which return two daily trips for each PEO are proposed. Computational results carried out on 50 instances based on real data show that it was appropriate to propose both types of methods, exact and heuristic. Furthermore, PEOs working for EMEL reacted positively to the trips corresponding to the generated solutions. Combined heat and power plants (CHP) maximise the usable energy from combustion processes. By providing both usable heat and electricity, it is a flexibly adjustable technology to industrial plants' energy demand. Today, CHP units are mostly fueled by fossil energy carriers, such as natural gas. However, CHPs must be operated with renewable fuels to comply with net-zero transition pathways. This study explores the economics of a biomass CHP plant in combination with an electrolyser, a dedicated renewable generation plant, and a small hydrogen storage tank for a Spanish case study. Using an optimisation model that combines electrolyser and biomass CHP operations, the cost-optimal operation is explored, considering various electricity prices and other scenarios. Under the assumption that heat generation from alternative sources can be flexibly reduced, we investigate if there are synergies between hydrogen and biomass use for CHP plants.

This paper deals with the Steelmaking and Casting phases of a real integrated plant. We focus on the scheduling of the casts on the machines of the process and on the cranes that perform the internal transport. The casting phase is made by Continuous Casting and Ingot Casting machines. A mixed integer linear programming model is presented for the schedule of operations, with the objective of minimizing the makespan. The model is divided into four sub-models: the steelmaking and casting processes, the cranes, the continuous casting machines and the ingot casting machines. An example is presented to show the application of the proposed model.

Greedy-Heuristic-Aided mixed-integer linear programming Approach for Arrival Scheduling

Scheduling arriving aircraft in terminal airspace can be formulated using mixed-integer linear programming and solved by a branch and bound algorithm. Given that the problem is intrinsically nondeterministic polynomial-time hard, success in solving the problem within a reasonable time is not always guaranteed. This paper proposes an efficient optimization approach that calculates the minimum total delay necessary for a conflict-free arrival sequence. Agreedy heuristic is developed to find a feasible solution quickly, which serves as a "hot start" so that the branch and bound algorithm can prune as many search tree nodes as it can. Unnecessary searching is thus saved. The greedy heuristic also provides an estimated upper bound for the maximum delay that guarantees a feasible solution for the mixed-integer linear programming. In addition, it identifies a group of aircraft associated with high delays, which are suspended in the first stage of scheduling and sequenced in the second stage based on available time slots. This tactic decreases the computational difficulty. The proposed approach is validated using arriving traffic in 40 major United States airports. Compared to a standalone mixed-integer linear programming, the greedy-heuristic-aided mixed-integer linear programming yields suboptimal solutions in a more efficient manner, and the compromise of optimality is limited.

Review of frequency response strategies in renewable-dominated power system grids: Market adaptations and unit commitment formulation

This study provides a thorough analysis of unit commitment (UC) formulations in the context of low-inertia power systems, which are increasingly prevalent as the transition to Renewable Energy Sources (RES) gain momentum. Given the move towards more sustainable energy models, incorporating RES presents unique challenges in maintaining grid stability due to their inherent lack of synchronous inertia. This review examined the intricacies of modelling energy market designs and UC strategies to tackle these challenges. The study explores the expansion of frequency response services, emphasizing the increasing dependence on ancillary services, particularly in markets with a substantial presence of RES, attention is focused on the unique operating challenges in regions like Sub-Saharan Africa, where dispersed grid networks and generation inadequacies compound the problem. The paper delves into different methodologies and modelling approaches used in frequency-constrained optimization, shedding light on the strengths and weaknesses of current practices. A crucial outcome of our study is that the use of uniform frequency response models to deduce post-fault frequency parameters will not give adequate results in sparsely connected power system networks. Also, studies primarily focus on generation adequacy and the reliability criterion of the largest generator outage, overlooking the potential impact of network constraints and congestions in their formulation. Our analysis provides valuable insights into creating market frameworks that optimize energy and ancillary services, ensuring a stable and efficient grid operation in a power system dominated by RES. Based on our findings, it is essential to establish electricity market frameworks that can effectively maximize the utilization of energy resources and address the specific regional challenges associated with frequency regulation services in the future.
