A mixed integer Formulation for Energy-efficient Multistage Adsorption Dryer Design

This work presents a mixed integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) formulation for the design of energy-efficient multistage adsorption dryers within constraints on product temperature and moisture content. Apart from optimizing temperatures and flows, the aim is to select the most efficient adsorbent per stage and product to air flow configuration. Superstructure models consisting of commonly used adsorbents such as zeolite, alumina, and silica-gel are developed and optimized for a two-stage, low-temperature, adsorption drying system. Results show that the optimal configuration is a hybrid system with zeolite as the first-stage adsorbent and silica-gel as the second-stage adsorbent in counter-current flow between drying air and product. A specific energy consumption of 2,275 kJ/kg is achieved, which reduces to 1,730 kJ/kg with heat recovery by a heat exchanger. Compared to a conventional two-stage dryer at the same drying temperature, this represents a 59% reduction in energy consumption. The optimal system ensures the exhaust air temperature of the first-stage regenerator is high enough to regenerate the second-stage adsorbent so no utility energy is spent in the second stage. A higher second-stage adsorbent wheel speed favors energy performance as it becomes optimized for energy recovery while the first is optimized for dehumidification. Although this work considers three candidate adsorbents in a two-stage system, the same reasoning can be applied to systems with more stages and adsorbents. The developed superstructure optimization methodology can, by extension, be applied to optimize multistage hybrid drying systems in general for any objective.

In this study, we tackle the problem of locating a facility in a region where a fixed line barrier divides the region into two. The resulting subregions communicate with each other through a number of passage points located on the line barrier. Our contribution is threefold. First, we formulate the problem as a mixed integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) model and provide an optimal solution methodology based on an Outer Approximation (OA) algorithm. Second, we discuss the minimax version of this problem for locating an emergency facility and use the OA algorithm to solve the problem. We then provide simple example problems and extensive computational results for both problems. Finally, we propose a one-infinity approximation approach for the latter problem which yields a linear model. Practical uses of the models have been discussed in the border crossing context. Imposing Radiality Constraints in Distribution System Optimization Problems

Distribution systems commonly operate with a radial topology, so all models of optimization problems in these distribution systems should consider radiality in their formulation. This work presents a literature review, a critical analysis, and a proposal for incorporating the radiality constraints in mathematical models of optimization problems for radial distribution systems. The objective is to show that the radiality constraints on such optimization problems can be considered in a simple and efficient way. The reconfiguration and expansion planning problems of distribution systems are used to test and verify the proposed radiality constraints. A generalization of radiality constraints is also examined.

In this paper, we describe the implementation of some heuristics for convex mixed integer nonlinear programs. The work focuses on three families of heuristics that have been successfully used for mixed integer linear programs: diving heuristics, the Feasibility Pump, and Relaxation Induced Neighborhood Search (RINS). We show how these heuristics can be adapted in the context of mixed integer nonlinear programming. We present results from computational experiments on a set of instances that show how the heuristics implemented help finding feasible solutions faster than the traditional branch-and-bound algorithm and how they help in reducing the total solution time of the branch-and-bound algorithm.

A numerical study of MIDACO on 100 MINLP benchmarks

This article presents a numerical study on MIDACO, a new global optimization software for mixed integer non-linear programming (MINLP) based on ant colony optimization and the oracle penalty method. Extensive and rigorous numerical tests on a set of 100 non-convex MINLP benchmark problems from the open literature are performed. Results obtained by MIDACO are directly compared to results by a recent study of state-of-the-art deterministic MINLP software on the same test set. Further comparisons with an established MINLP software is undertaken in addition. This study shows that MIDACO is not only competitive to the established MINLP software, but can even outperform those in terms of the number of global optimal solutions found. Moreover, the parallelization capabilities of MIDACO enable it to be even competitive to deterministic software regarding the amount of (serial processed) function evaluation, while the black-box capabilities of MIDACO offer an intriguing new robustness for MINLP.

Extension of this problem is investigated for situations that coverage areas are elliptical;these ellipses can locate anywhere on the plane with any angle. mixed integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) is applied for formulation. This problem can be used in many practical situations such as locating wireless transmitter towers. A heuristic algorithm named MCLPEA for solving this problem was designed. This algorithm can produce very good results in efficient running time. Finally, the comparison of the results for this study was carried done.

This paper deals with Benders’ Decomposition techniques applied to Volt Var Control algorithms for MV distribution networks. This partitioning technique helps to solve certain classes of mixed integer nonlinear programming problems with decomposable structure. Therefore, this approach can be applied to the standard case of Volt Var Control algorithms in distribution systems which use continuous and discrete control variables. Considering the mathematical properties of prior algorithms, such as mixed continuous and discrete variables, Bender’s Decomposition techniques allow an effective global optimum research. The effectiveness of this method is tested on the academic 30 bus distribution system and on a typical French MV network with 150 nodes/ 149 lines/ 5 onload tap changers transformers/ 3 DGs/ 1 capacitor bank.

The present paper compares the application of one deterministic and three non-deterministic optimization algorithms to global transformer design optimization. One deterministic optimization algorithm (mixed integer nonlinear programming), is compared to three non-deterministic approaches (Harmony Search, Differential Evolution and Genetic Algorithm). The comparison yields significant conclusions on the efficiency of the algorithms and the selection of the most suitable for the transformer design optimization problem.

This study addresses the problem of designing a new natural gas transmission network or expanding an existing network while minimizing the total investment and operating costs. A substantial reduction in costs can be obtained by effectively designing and operating the network. A well-designed network helps natural gas companies minimize the costs while increasing the customer service level. The aim of the study is to determine the optimum installation scheduling and locations of new pipelines and compressor stations. On an existing network, the model also optimizes the total flow through pipelines that satisfy demand to determine the best purchase amount of gas. A mixed integer nonlinear programming model for steady-state natural gas transmission problem on tree-structured network is introduced. The problem is a multi-period model, so changes in the network over a planning horizon can be observed and decisions can be made accordingly in advance. The problem is modeled and solved with easily accessible modeling and solving tools in order to help decision makers to make appropriate decisions in a short time. Various test instances are generated, including problems with different sizes, period lengths and cost parameters, to evaluate the performance and reliability of the model. Test results revealed that the proposed model helps to determine the optimum number of periods in a planning horizon and the crucial cost parameters that affect the network structure the most.

Combining Mathematical programming and SysML for Automated Component Sizing of Hydraulic Systems

In this paper, we present a framework for automated component sizing to extend a designer's ability to evaluate a particular configuration during the architecture exploration phase of a design process. Component sizing is a hard problem to solve, both from a computational and modeling aspect. This is because of competing objectives, requirements from multiple disciplines, and the need to find a good solution quickly for the architecture being considered. In current approaches, designers rely on heuristics and iterate over the multiple objectives and requirements until a satisfactory solution is found. To improve on this state of practice, we introduce advances in the following two areas: (a) solving the problem efficiently so that all of the imposed requirements are satisfied simultaneously and the solution obtained is mathematically optimal and (b) modeling a component sizing problem in a manner that is convenient to designers. An acausal, algebraic, equation-based, declarative modeling approach using mathematical programming (GAMS) is taken to solve these problems more efficiently. The object management group systems modeling language (OMG SysML (TM)) is used to model component sizing problems in order to facilitate problem formulation, model reuse and automatic generation of low-level code that can be solved using GAMS and its solvers. This framework is demonstrated by applying it to an example of a hydraulic log splitter. Based on this initial example, we discuss two advantages of this framework-total time taken in solving multiple scenarios for a given configuration and the graphical representation of a problem in SysML.
