Optimization and analysis of the profitability of tariff structures with two-part tariffs

Service providers often offer tariff structures with several two-part tariffs that consist of a fixed fee and a usage price, such that consumers may pick the tariff they prefer. Prices of tariffs have significant impacts on service providers' profit, because they simultaneously influence consumers' tariff choices and their usage. The number of tariffs also plays an important role, because more tariffs segment the market better but also increase the administrative burden and require more marketing effort. This article presents a mixed-integer nonlinear programming optimization problem to determine profit-maximizing tariffs;compares several heuristic search methods, in particular, the gradient method, stochastic search, and simulated annealing, to solve this problem;analyses the profitability of different tariff structures;and outlines the factors that drive differences in profitability across various tariff structures. The results show that especially for large samples of more than 100 consumers, simulated annealing performs best and deviates only 0.2% from the optimum. Structures with fewer two-part tariffs are generally sufficient, because additional two-part tariffs only negligibly increase service providers' profit. (C) 2010 Published by Elsevier B.V.

In this paper, a mixed integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) based model is proposed for optimal allocation of thyristor controlled phase angle regulator (TCPAR). The optimization is conducted to minimize overall system cost (i.e. operating cost and investment cost of TCPAR). The rating of TCPAR is first obtained based on N-1 contingency analysis. The impact of optimal placement of TCPAR has also been investigated by means of several security and reliability indices. The simulations are carried out on the Roy Billinton test system (RBTS) to show the effectiveness of adding TCPAR.

This is a summary of the author's PhD thesis supervised by Edoardo Amaldi and defended on 3 April 2009 at the Politecnico di Milano. The thesis is written in English and is available from the author upon request. In this work, we extensively study two challenging variants of the general problem of clustering a given set of data points with respect to hyperplanes so as to extract collinearity between them. After pointing out the similarities and differences with previous work on related problems, we propose mathematical programming formulations for our problem variants. Since these problems are difficult to handle due to the nonlinear nonconvexity that arises because of the a"" (2)-norm in the distance function and a large number of binary assignment variables, we develop column generation algorithms and heuristics to tackle them. The efficiency of the methods developed is demonstrated on realistic randomly generated instances along with applications in piecewise linear model fitting and line segment detection in digital images.

Device-to-device (D2D) communication as an underlaying cellular network empowers user-driven rich multimedia applications and also has proven to be network efficient offloading eNodeB traffic. However, D2D transmitters may cause significant amount of interference to the primary cellular network when radio resources are shared between them. During the downlink (DL) phase, primary cell UE (user equipment) may suffer from interference by the D2D transmitter. On the other hand, the immobile eNodeB is the victim of interference by the D2D transmitter during the uplink (UL) phase when radio resources are allocated randomly. Such interference can be avoided otherwise diminish if radio resource allocated intelligently with the coordination from the eNodeB. In this paper, we formulate the problem of radio resource allocation to the D2D communications as a mixed integer nonlinear programming (MINLP). Such an optimization problem is notoriously hard to solve within fast scheduling period of the Long Term Evolution (LTE) network. We therefore propose an alternative greedy heuristic algorithm that can lessen interference to the primary cellular network utilizing channel gain information. We also perform extensive simulation to prove the efficacy of the proposed algorithm.

An optimal scheduling and control method for a multiple pump system is proposed from the energy efficient point of view. The model-based optimal problem is first formulated and then converted to be a mixed integer nonlinear programming problem. The proposed method provides an optimal solution regarding to how many and which available pumps should be put into operation when the (head) demand to the system and/or system operating condition changes. The running speeds of operating pumps are also derived by the proposed algorithm. A feedback control mechanism is also introduced into the considered framework in order to enhance the system tracking performance and robustness. A nonlinear programming solution is derived and implemented in a testing facility. The experimental results show a clear and huge potential to improve multi-pump system's efficiency using the proposed algorithm and framework.

We seek to derive strong valid linear inequalities for Mn;this is motivated by the fact that many exact solvers for nonconvex problems use polyhedral relaxations so as to compute a lower bound via linear programming *** present a class of linear inequalities that, together with the well-known McCormick inequalities, defines the convex hull of M₂. This class of inequalities, which we call lifted tangent inequalities, is uncountably infinite, which is not surprising given that the convex hull of M₂ is not a polyhedron. Covering a line segment with variable radius discs

The paper addresses the problem of locating sensors with a circular field of view so that it given line segment is under full Surveillance, which is termed as the disc covering problem on a line. The cost of each sensor includes a fixed component f, and a variable component that is a convex function of the diameter of the field-of-view area. When only one type of sensor or, in general. one type of disc, is available, then a simple polynomial algorithm solves the problem. When (here are different types of sensors, the problem becomes hard. A branch-and-bound algorithm as well as an efficient heuristic are developed for the special case in which the variable cost component of each sensor is proportional to the square of the measure of the field-of-view area. The heuristic very often obtains the optimal solution as shown in extensive computational testing.

Global Transformer Optimization Method Using Evolutionary Design and Numerical Field Computation

This paper addresses the complex optimum transformer design problem, which is formulated as a mixed-integer nonlinear programming problem, by introducing an integrated design optimization method based on evolutionary algorithms and numerical electromagnetic and thermal field computations. The main contributions of this research are: i) introduction of a new overall transformer optimization method, minimizing either the overall transformer materials cost or the overall transformer materials and operating cost, ii) expansion of the solution space by innovative techniques that define the variation of crucial design variables such as the conductors' cross-section, ensuring global optimum transformer designs, and iii) incorporation of numerical field computation in order to validate the feasibility of the optimum designs. The proposed method is compared with a heuristic optimization method of the transformer manufacturing industry and the results demonstrate the robustness and the superiority of this new approach.

Simultaneously scheduling multiple turns for steel color-coating production

This paper investigates a large-scale scheduling problem in the iron and steel industry, called color-coating production scheduling (CCPS). The problem is to generate multiple production turns for the galvanized coils that dynamically arrive from upstream lines within a given scheduling horizon, and at the same time determine the sequence of these turns so that the productivity and product quality are maximized while the production cost and the number of generated turns are minimized. We formulate this problem as a mixed integer nonlinear program and propose a tabu search heuristic to obtain satisfactory solutions. Results on real production instances show that the presented model and heuristic are more effective and efficient with comparison to manual scheduling. A practical scheduling system for CCPS combining the model and heuristic has been developed and successfully implemented in a major iron and steel enterprise in China. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. The global solver in the LINDO Application programming Interface (LINDO API) finds guaranteed global optima to nonconvex, nonlinear and integer mathematical models using the branch and bound/relax approach. We describe (a) the class of problems for which it tends to be appropriate;(b) how to access it directly via the LINDO API or via various modelling language front ends;(c) heuristics used for finding good initial solutions;(d) methods for constructing easily solved relaxations;(e) branching rules for splitting a problem into more easily solved subproblems;and (f) some illustrative computational results.
