We investigated a multi-day distribution problem while supplies are limited. This scenario can be found in post-natural disasters or economic crisis such as floods, earthquakes, palm oil shortage crisis, etc. The objective function of this problem is to minimize total traveling distance, unsatisfied cost, and variance of supply delivery proportion. In order to solve this multi-day problem optimally, it requires large computing memory and takes a long computational time. Therefore, we divided these large problems into multiple daily sub-problems and solved the sub-problems with the exact method. The sub-problems were solved sequentially for which the prior daily sub-problem is to be tackle first and the following daily sub-problems are defined based on the prior daily sub-problem solution. Changes were applied to update demands and to adjust delivery priority. There are three delivery priority setups proposing in this paper. Also, we present an experiment using the three proposed methods to solve modified Solomon's vehicle routing problem datasets which extended a single period vehicle routing problem with time windows to be seven-day routing problems.

In this work we present a stochastic programming model minimizing costs, to support the decision process of inventory policy which best satisfies the demand for food in shelters when hurricane winds are about to impact a town. In this model we consider perishable products as well as the first in first out (FIFO) system for their consumption. In order to make the model closer to reality ordering cost is time-varying and we add a penalty cost in case the shortage exceeds a known limit for two days in a row. Finally the cost to dispose of expired food is greater than the purchase cost of the product since throwing away food has ethical implications. Starting from a stochastic programming model, we present a procedure to transform it to a deterministic mixed integer programming model (MIP) with non-convex objective function over its entire domain, which closely states the situation in reality. Preliminary computational results and discussion are presented. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd.

The mining programming of accumulated bauxite should comprehensively consider the site selection and rational utilization of resources. The mixed integer programming model on optimization of site selection and rational ore blending was constructed on the basis of the theories of logistics planning, operations research, etc. Take Taipingbei mine in Pingguo bauxite as the example, the results which were calculated by the operations research software Xpress-MP show that the model is rationality and feasible. The mathematical model is of great importance to the sustainable utilization of the bauxite resources, increasing mine service life and raising economic benefit of enterprises.

The world is witnessing the COVID-19 pandemic, which originated in the city of Wuhan, China, and has quickly spread to the whole world, with many cases having been reported in India as well. The healthcare system is going through unprecedented load on its resources while the available infrastructure is ***-19 samples are being tested at a massive scale and even small optimizations at this scale can save time, huge amounts of money, and resources. Particularly, the manual approach or even baseline greedy approach being used to allocate COVID-19 samples to medical labs across a state can lead to underutilization of resources. Hence, this work proposes a system to optimize the problem of allocation of medical samples to medical testing laboratories with high efficiency and minimal economic penalty. We use the mixed integer programming (MIP) model using high-performance MIP based solvers for custom applications by providing a tight integration with the branch-and-cut algorithms of the supported solvers to improve the results compared to baseline greedy approach. The system provides a transportation schedule optimized with respect to capacity of different labs and COVID-19 cases across the state of Karnataka. We tested the model on various datasets and observed significant improvement over the baseline greedy model.

Supply chain risks instigate disruptions and uncertainties in various supply chain operations thereby compromising its efficiency and effectiveness. Consequently, managing and mitigating the adverse effects of various exasperating supply chain risks have become a crucial decision-making activity in the current competitive industrial scenario. Enhancing the reliability and flexibility levels of supply chains is the most appropriate proactive strategy to mitigate the influence of these risk factors. However, the literature review conducted in the field of supply chain risk management indicates the unavailability of studies considering different aspects of supply chain reliability simultaneously that can yield formidable results in reality. To fill this gap, the present paper illustrates a framework for analyzing a supply chain considering different aspects of reliability such as the ability to deliver products in right quantity, at right time and with the right quality. Accordingly, a mixed integer programming model is developed for designing a four echelon serial supply chain network considering the above aspects of reliability. A case study is also presented to illustrate the application of this mathematical model for analyzing the reliability of existing supply chain processes, as well as utilizing it in supply chain network design. Due to the growing environmental pressure and resource antinomy, increasing attention is given to the reverse logistics. In this paper, a collection model based on circular economy, which is oriented to the third party reverse logistics, is proposed. The model, called mixed integer programming model, is solved by an algorithm based on Lagrangian heuristics. A numerical example is given to illustrate the rationality of the model and efficiency of algorithm.

This paper establishes a mixed integer programming model for the integrated scheduling problem of quay crane(QC), automatic straddle carrier (ASC) and split-platform storage/retrieval system(SP-AS/RS),the objective function of the model is the sum of the minimum working time of ASC, SP-AS/RS and the minimum delay time of QC. The model is solved by an improved genetic algorithm(IGA),which objective function solution is compared with the corresponding model using AGV, the comparison results are analyzed in different scales. The quality of the solution of IGA and SAA was compared by simulation experiments. which verified the effectiveness of IGA in different scales.

Minimizing the Total Weighted Completion Time of a Single Machine With Flexible Maintenance

This paper investigates the NP-hard problem of scheduling n jobs on a single machine, where the machine must be stopped periodically for maintenance after a certain continuous working time. The objective is to minimize the total weighted completion time. Two-phase heuristic algorithms are proposed: in the first phase, initial solutions are obtained by WSPT or look-ahead (LA) algorithms;then, in the second phase, the solutions are improved through improvement procedures. Additionally, a mixed integer programming (MIP) model and a branch and bound (BAB) algorithm are developed. The results of computational experiments demonstrate that when the number of jobs is less than or equal to 20, the BAB is competitive compared with an MIP model implemented in a commercial solver because in most instances the former can obtain optimal solutions faster. The results also indicate that the LA algorithm significantly outperforms the WSPT algorithm in terms of the solution quality, and the proposed improvement procedure is evidently useful in refining the solution quality for both the WSPT and LA algorithms.

Free-riding is one of the frequently occurring behaviors in dual-channel garment supply chain network. In this study, the effect of the free-riding behavior and market segmentation were considered. A mixed integer programming model was built to realize effective integration of the dual-channel supply chain network, which consists of multiple manufacturers, multiple distribution centers, and multiple markets. According to the characteristics of the model, the optimal solution was obtained with LINGO. Finally, numerical simulations were conducted to explore the effectiveness of the model. The findings indicate that the proposed model can effectively solve the dual-channel garment supply chain network design, and provided theoretical references to the modern garment enterprises in market competition.

Efficient 2D irregular layout by vector superposition NFP and mixed-integer programming

As a typical combinatorial optimization problem, two-dimensional (2D) irregular layout is a common problem in the engineering field. No-fit polygon (NFP) is a common geometric tool for solving layout problems. Although it is necessary to calculate NFP frequently in the process of layout, the search efficiency of the NFP generation algorithm is affected. The existing unfitting polygon algorithms have difficulties in dealing with complex contours, especially irregular contours with cavities. The large-scale layout process takes the long time with the low material utilization. A vector superposition NFP (VS-NFP) method is proposed in this paper to improve the solution efficiency of 2D irregular layout problems with complex contours. Based on the VS-NFP, an improved mixed integer programming (MIP) model is built. The model increases compression constraints for high solution search efficiency. A hybrid algorithm based on the VS-NFP and MIP is proposed to solve the problem. Comparing with the existing methods, the proposed method shortens the search time and improves the material utilization. The proposed method is verified in the application of large-scale layout problems.
