Bio-based supply chains are by nature complex to optimize. The new logistic concept of integrated biomass logistical center (IBLC) provides us the opportunity to make full use of the idle capacity for a food/feed plant to produce biobased products so that the entire chain efficiency can be improved. Although research has been conducted to analyze the IBLC concept, is yet to be an optimization model that can optimally arrange the activities in the supply chain where an IBLC stands in the middle. To fill the knowledge gap in the literature, this paper makes the first step to develop a MILP model that enables biobased supply chain optimization with the IBLC concept, which supports logistic and processing decisions in the chain. The model is applied in a case study for a feed and fodder plant in Spain where managerial insights have been derived for transferring the plant to a profitable IBLC.

Offsetting Inventory Cycles using mixed integer programming and Genetic Algorithm

We propose a mixed integer programming model to minimize the maximum storage space requirement over an infinite time horizon by offsetting the inventory cycles of items. We also develop a genetic algorithm to find the near-optimal solution. The mixed integer programming model and the genetic algorithm produce better results than the existing heuristic. We also develop a mixed integer programming model for the finite time horizon;this model is more general and realistic than that for the infinite time horizon. A warehouse management system is designed based on the algorithms we developed. Significance: We provide both a mixed integer program and a genetic algorithm to minimize the maximum storage space requirement for the warehouse. These methods can be practically implemented at warehouses and distribution centers for the utilization of the storage space and other resources.

Optimization of a rural bus service integrated with e-commerce deliveries guided by a new sustainable policy in China

Electronic business has expanded, resulting in flourishing rural e-commerce globally, and particularly in China. This paper introduces a novel rural public transit system that integrates passenger and freight services-a rural electric bus service that provides services for passengers and e-commerce packages. This blended service reduces logistical costs and generates additional income for the transit operator. The objective is to minimise cost for the transit user and operator by using a mixed-integer linear programming model that solves bus routing and bus trip scheduling for multiple rural towns;in addition, the model is tested by the Gurobi solver at small-scale instances. The developed solution is a hybrid heuristic algorithm based on adaptive large neighborhood search and tabu search approaches. Finally, a case study in China is conducted to examine the proposed cost-effective methodology and ensure that the integrated scheme will significantly save operational system costs without causing any passenger inconvenience. The research also shows how to optimally design the size of rural electric buses to reduce purchasing and maintenance costs. The optimal results of the case study, comprising 5 towns and 78 villages, show an annual cost saving of approximately yen 847,000 (approximately $121,000) and an annual mileage saving of approximately 66,000 km for the proposed scheme. In addition, the case study explicates key parameters selected for transfer package requirements and the effective deployment of the proposed scheme.

Integrated Optimization model for Split-platform AS/RS and ASC in an Automated Container Terminal

In this paper, a mixed integer programming model is established for the loading and unloading process of split-platform storage/retrieval system (SP-AS/RS), automatic straddle carrier (ASC) and quay crane (QC) in the automated terminal. In this model, the SP-AS/RS system operates in dual-command (DC) mode, where a storage operation is followed by a retrieval operation or a retrieval operation is followed by a storage operation. The model is solved by the improved genetic algorithm (IGA), in order to verify the effectiveness of IGA, the solution quality and solution speed of search algorithm, IGA and simulated annealing algorithm (SAA) are compared. By solving the single command (SC) mode and dual-command (DC) mode in small, medium and large scale, the influence of two working modes on loading and unloading efficiency is analyzed. The effects of ASC+SP-AS/RS and AGV+SP-AS/RS on the overall loading and unloading efficiency of the terminal are compared and solved by IGA.

Multi-period Supply Chain Network Design Considering Carbon Emissions, Transportation Methods and Quantity Discounts

Nowadays, competition is constantly intensifying, which is also reflected in the supply chain. For example, in order to be qualified, suppliers will offer discounts to attract customers. Quantity discounting is a real problem in the real world, but the relevant research literature is few, so we propose a mixed integer programming model for quantity discounting problem. This model is based on strategic planning and tactics. It offers a whole-unit quantity discount to suppliers, taking into account the mode of transport and the carbon emissions associated with the production and transport. Emissions. In addition, the model also makes decisions about the opening and expansion of factory warehouses and the production and distribution of goods. The proposed model can be used for strategic and tactical planning when suppliers have supply constraints and quantity discounts. In order to illustrate the application of the model and test the performance of the model, we assume some numerical cases and solve them through CPLEX. The results show that in the case of small and medium scale, the CPLEX solver can obtain high quality solution with short solution time, but in the case of large scale, although the solution quality is high, the solution time is shorter and longer. We can consider designing some heuristic algorithms in the future to reduce the solving time.

Supply chain risks instigate disruptions and uncertainties in various supply chain operations thereby compromising its efficiency and effectiveness. Consequently, managing and mitigating the adverse effects of various exasperating supply chain risks have become a crucial decision-making activity in the current competitive industrial scenario. Enhancing the reliability and flexibility levels of supply chains is the most appropriate proactive strategy to mitigate the influence of these risk factors. However, the literature review conducted in the field of supply chain risk management indicates the unavailability of studies considering different aspects of supply chain reliability simultaneously that can yield formidable results in reality. To fill this gap, the present paper illustrates a framework for analyzing a supply chain considering different aspects of reliability such as the ability to deliver products in right quantity, at right time and with the right quality. Accordingly, a mixed integer programming model is developed for designing a four echelon serial supply chain network considering the above aspects of reliability. A case study is also presented to illustrate the application of this mathematical model for analyzing the reliability of existing supply chain processes, as well as utilizing it in supply chain network design

Strategic Human Resource Management Simulation Considering Work Elements, Skills, Learning and Forgetting

The assembly line design and balancing problems have been widely documented in the literature. Generally, many previous papers assume the tasks do not depend on the stations, i.e., any task can be carried out at any station. On the other hand, some previous papers involve solving two assignment problems. For instance, resources must be assigned to stations, while tasks are assigned to the same stations simultaneously. On the other hand, some previous papers also introduce the lines where some tasks cannot be performed at all the stations and where performance times depend on the worker performing the task just like the real world. However, the models are processed to reduce the dimension of the problem, and therefore they have some shortcomings. Especially, the task time for temporary workers is expressed as the product of the task time for a permanent worker and a coefficient deterministically. Therefore, it cannot consider the strategic human resource planning even though the skill levels of various workers exist in the real world. In this paper, a multi-period worker assignment model considering work elements, skills, learning and forgetting is proposed by redefining new variables and parameters regarding worker skills. Using numerical experiments, we show better cases where the proposed model leads to less total processing time and higher production rate for each human resource strategy. In addition, we show the number of workers at a particular skill at the end of simulation to consider strategic human resource management simulation.

Coordinated operation strategy of hybrid storage system in wind power peak shaving scenarios

With more wind power being integrated into the power grid, its random and intermittent output has brought great impact on wind power utilisation. The new type of liquid compressed air energy storage has the advantages of high energy density, large capacity and free from geographical constraints. It can be used as a peak shaving device for wind farms to improve the accommodation of wind power, but its flexibility is relatively limited. Although electrochemical storage is flexible, large capacity requirements can lead to large costs when used for peak shaving. Considering the power and electricity capacity characteristics of different storage system as well as the output characteristics of wind farm, a hybrid storage system consisting of a new type of liquid compressed air energy storage and electrochemical storage is proposed for peak shaving of wind farm. Considering the power efficiency characteristics of storage system, a linear model for different storage is established. Then a mixed integer programming model is established to maximise the return of a wind farm under the cooperation mode of hybrid storage system in a wind farm. A case study shows that the proposed hybrid storage coordinated operation strategy can effectively improve the wind farm income and the accommodation of wind power.

Inventory routing problem (IRP) which is a problem integrated with inventory control and vehicle routing is a typical NP-hard problem, and also is the key of inventory and distribution coordinated optimization in the vendor managed inventory (VMI). An IRP of petrol secondary delivery system on the background of petroleum and petrochemical enterprise is investigated. Given a set of homogeneous vehicles with capacity constraint, which can be used for fuel distribution from one depot to a set of petrol stations that have deterministic fuel consumption, to minimize the total cost of the system, a mixed integer linear programming model of the inventory routing problem with soft time window (IRPSTW) is established. The model is solved by Lingo software. Simulations are done on an example. Based on solutions with different weight coefficients, we analyse the impact on the total cost by vehicle assignment cost and travel cost. The results of this paper provide a theoretical basis to solve the petrol secondary distribution problem of multiple terminal stations.
