Network design for a decarbonised supply chain considering cap-and-trade policy of carbon emissions

Decarbonisation of the supply chain necessitates the control of carbon emissions along with the minimisation of cost. This is quite challenging in a multi-echelon supply chain involving multiple suppliers, multiple products, multiple time periods and multimodal transportation. This research deals with the design of a decarbonised supply chain network, under a dynamic environment, considering carbon emissions at various stages of the supply chain. A mixed-integer linear program (MILP) has been developed for a four-echelon supply chain. The problem is solved by using two approaches. The integrated approach, which considers the entire supply chain network as a single entity, yields better results in terms of profitability and more so, when the selling price is lower. Scenario analysis reveals that as the carbon cap reduces, the gross profit shows concomitant reduction and when the former goes below a threshold value, carbon procurement becomes necessary lowering the gross profit further. As the carbon price per unit increases, the gross profit initially decreases and then stabilises. This study contributes by developing an integrated dynamic supply chain network model incorporating carbon emissions at different stages.

Optimal design of a distributed energy resource system that economically reduces carbon emissions

Distributed energy resources (DER) are commonly associated with reduced CO2e emissions. The decision to design such a system that reduces emissions typically results in increased costs. In order to economically select and operate a DER system that also reduces CO2e emissions, a mixed integer linear program for sizing and dispatching a DER system was developed and used with real data to determine the optimal DER design that reduces emissions at the lowest cost. The optimization program includes a novel formulation of constraints that govern utility natural gas, generator operation, and interaction with fleet vehicles. The results show that the least expensive way of reducing CO2e is through the use of renewable gas in a conventional combined heat and power engine (i.e., a gas turbine), resulting in a cost to reduce emissions of between $120 and $150 per CO2e tonne. Reducing emissions further requires the adoption of higher efficiency generators, or renewable generators, increasing cost of CO2e by up to $475 per tonne. Allowing for electrical export and the offset of grid operations results in the purchase of less energy storage, reducing the cost of CO2e to $190 per tonne under retail electricity rates, or $230 per tonne when the DER operator sends excess renewables back to the utility grid for free. Finally optimization results for this particular case indicate that changes to the transportation system occur last since the marginal costs of changing fleet vehicles is highest versus the CO2e reduction benefit.

Designing drone delivery networks for vaccine supply chain: a case study of Niger

This research aims to evaluate the use of drones to deliver pediatric vaccines in remote areas of low-income and low-middle-income countries. Delivering vaccines in these regions is challenging because of the inadequate road networks and long transportation distances that make it difficult to maintain the cold chain's integrity during delivery. We propose a mixed-integer linear program to determine the location of drone hubs to facilitate vaccine delivery. The model considers the operational attributes of drones, vaccine wastage in the supply chain, cold storage, and transportation capacities. We develop a case study using data from Niger to determine the impact of drone deliveries in improving vaccine availability. Based on our numerical analysis, regional centers should be considered potential locations for drone hubs. We demonstrate that outreach sessions supported by drone deliveries of vaccines can improve vaccine availability. These improvements depend on the available budget to build drone hubs and purchase drones, available cold storage capacity, and the population density in the study region.

Thermal storages that use phase-change materials are increasingly applied in heating systems with renewable energy sources. Their main advantage is storing energy of a high density while keeping the storage at lower temperatures. To exploit the full potential, optimal control is applied, which requires an appropriately designed model of the heating system. This paper proposes a model of the latent stratified storage in a mixed logical dynamical form. The proposed model is developed and verified on a real heating pilot system with a latent heat storage. Thermodynamic behaviour of this system is simulated, both by using mixed logical dynamical model and a non-linear thermodynamical model. Obtained results show high accuracy of the models. In light of the growth in the numbers of maritime disasters during recent years, there is a growing interest in the evacuation of passengers and crew at sea, as documented in recent discussions at the Marine Safety Committee of the IMO. NATO has also developed analogous regulations as part of its Naval Ship Code. In this paper we propose a simplified evacuation model based on the shortest emergency evacuation time for emergency evacuation of a naval ship, which using the theory of mixed-integer linear program to solve navy ship evacuation problem. This evacuation planning model focused on the average evacuation time to travel through the ordered sequence of consecutive arcs by each group. In addition, the model revealed the amount of flow per time unit through the door. Secondly, we proposed a heuristic algorithm to produce sub-optimal evacuation plan. A numerical example is given at last. Results show that the model based on the theory of the mixed-integer linear program can provide more available evacuation solution for naval ship evacuation process.

In this paper, we investigate the Multiple Traveling Salesman Problem with One Drone Station (mTSP-ODS). More precisely, given a fleet of trucks located at the central depot, several drones at a drone station, and a set of customers, we are interested in serving all customers exactly once either by a truck or a drone in the shortest possible time. In the mTSP-ODS, drones are at a drone station, which can be activated by a truck's visit to hand over some parcels, which are then delivered by the drones. We analyze the impact of serving multiple customers in single drone sortie versus several sorties delivering a single parcel. We formulate both cases as mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) models. We solve the models by the standard MILP solver Gurobi and an effective heuristic that we introduce. We evaluate the models and the heuristic through computational experiments on benchmark instances. According to the numerical results, in addition to the efficiency of the heuristic, we observe that multi-package payload of drones can show benefits under some conditions.

Due to the essential role that pilots play in the operation of airlines, the pilots should demonstrate a high level of skills and technical knowledge for safe conduct of aircrafts. For this purpose, pilots must pass specific training courses that are time consuming and expensive. Consequently, to keep the flights without interruption, to have the best use of resources, and to minimize the costs, the airlines need to find optimal training plans for their crew. In this paper, we formulate this process as a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) model. Due to complexity of the model, we propose a greedy heuristic algorithm. To test the validity of the MILP model as well as the performance of the heuristic, we conducted computational experiments on randomly-generated instances with realistic features, and we report the results which provide useful insights and show the effectiveness of the algorithm.

Demand response (DR) will be an inevitable part of the future power system operation to compensate for stochastic variations of the ever-increasing renewable generation. A solution to achieve DR is to broadcast dynamic prices to customers at the edge of the grid. However, appropriate models are needed to estimate the potential flexibility of different types of consumers for day-ahead and real-time ancillary services provision, while accounting for the rebound effect (RE). In this study, two RE models are presented and compared to investigate the behaviour of flexible electrical consumers and quantify the aggregate flexibility provided. The stochastic nature of consumers' price response is also considered in this study using chance constrained (CC) programming. The technology advancement and cost decline of renewable and sustainable energy increase the penetration of distribution energy resources (DERs) in power system. Peer-to-Peer (P2P) market is a typical energy transaction scheme in the smart grid. In a P2P market, a peer can share his surplus energy with local peers. Such a market mechanism can increase the revenue of DERs owners and reduce consumers' energy cost. P2P transaction has attracted wide attention from researchers. This paper proposes an equilibrium framework to model P2P energy transaction at multiple nodes. The structure of the market is given and stakeholders' optimal function is formulated as the joint Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) conditions of the optimization problems of individual participants, which can be further solved via a mixed-integer linear program (MILP). The energy flow is further embedded in the optimal power flow problem to ensure network operating constraints. Finally, case study demonstrates that our proposed P2P market benefits all participants.

We address an optimal control problem for a microgrid in islanded operation with bounded uncertain load and renewable infeed. While model predictive control (MPC) with worst-case cost evaluation is often employed to obtain robust optimal control laws in the presence of bounded disturbances, it suffers from an inherent conservativeness. To counteract this phenomenon, we propose an approximate closed-loop minimax MPC scheme, where the renewable energy sources output can be curtailed. The MPC is formulated as a mixed-integer linear program, solved online and applied in a receding horizon fashion. In the case study, the approximate closed-loop approach yields a better prediction accuracy and performance than the corresponding open-loop scheme.
