mixed-integer linear programming heuristics for the prepack optimization problem

In this paper we consider a packing problem arising in inventory allocation applications, where the operational cost for packing the bins is comparable, or even higher, than the cost of the bins (and of the items) themselves. This is the case, for example, of warehouses that have to manage a large number of different customers (e.g., stores), each requiring a given set of items. For this problem, we present mixed integer linear programming heuristics based on problem substructures that lead to easy-to-solve and meaningful subproblems, and exploit them within an overall meta heuristic framework. The new heuristics are evaluated on a standard set of instances, and benchmarked against known heuristics from the literature. Computational experiments show that very good (often proven optimal) solutions can consistently be computed in short computing times. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Optimal Operational Adjustment of a Community-Based Off-Grid Polygeneration Plant using a Fuzzy mixed integer linear programming Model

Community-based off-grid polygeneration plants based on micro-hydropower are a practical solution to provide clean energy and other essential utilities for rural areas with access to suitable rivers. Such plants can deliver co-products such as purified water and ice for refrigeration, which can improve standards of living in such remote locations. Although polygeneration gives advantages with respect to system efficiency, the interdependencies of the integrated process units may come as a potential disadvantage, due to susceptibility to cascading failures when one of the system components is partially or completely inoperable. In the case of a micro-hydropower-based polygeneration plant, a drought may reduce electricity output, which can, in turn, reduce the level of utilities available for use by the community. The study proposes a fuzzy mixed-integer linear programming model for the optimal operational adjustment of an off-grid micro-hydropower-based polygeneration plant seeking to maximize the satisfaction levels of the community utility demands, which are represented as fuzzy constraints. Three case studies are considered to demonstrate the developed model. The use of a diesel generator for back-up power is considered as an option to mitigate inoperability during extreme drought conditions.

Stencil Printing Optimization using a Hybrid of Support Vector Regression and mixed-integer linear programming

This research proposes an optimization approach to enhance the stencil printing process (SPP) in surface mount printed circuit board (PCB) assembly. Stencil printing behavior is affected by many variables including stencil design, solder paste composition, squeegee speed and pressure, and other environmental conditions. In this research, support vector regression (SVR) model is trained to capture the complex relationships among these variables, based on historical data. A mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) model is proposed to minimize the total absolute predicted deviation of average volume transfer from target. The optimal printing settings are retrieved for different sample problems with low computational cost. © 2017 The Authors

The efficient production of green energy plays an import role in modern economies. In this paper we address the optimization of cable connections between turbines in an offshore wind park. Different versions of this problem have been studied recently. In a previous joint project with Vattenfall BA Wind (a global leader in energy production) we have studied and modeled the main constraints arising in practical cases. Building on that model, in the present paper we address new features that have been recently proposed by Vattenfall's experts. Turbines are becoming still more customized, therefore it is important to be able to evaluate the impact of new technologies with a flexible optimization tool. We here show how some new features can effectively be modeled and solved using a mixed-integer linear programming paradigm. Computational results on a real-world case are briefly presented. © 2018 Elsevier B.V.

In a society where the demand for multimedia applications and data exchange is experiencing an unstoppable growth, multibeam systems have proven to be one of the most relevant solutions for satellite-based communication systems. Though already well represented among the geostationary satellites today, there are still several unresolved design optimization challenges for these complex systems that could lead to improved performances and to better system costs. The satellite platform, the repeater, and the antennas are examples of subsystems that should be designed jointly in order to reach an optimized technical solution that fulfills the service requirements. Traditionally, such complex tasks are addressed through a decomposition of the overall system design into a sequence of smaller decision problems. In this article, we propose to rely on operations research techniques to, on the one hand, take into account explicitly the interdependencies of these decomposed problems, and on the other hand, to handle the own constraints of each subsystem and their interactions. In this paper, the focus is laid on the optimization of the beam layouts of the multibeam satellites. Indeed, in addition to being a perfect example of the aforementioned importance of dealing with subsystem constraints, this problem appears early in the chain of design of a multibeam satellite system and is therefore critical for the quality of the telecommunication system: the weaknesses of a beam layout cannot be made up for later on in the system design. For this crucial optimization phase, the strength of the methodology we propose in this paper is to use mixed-integer linear programming to incorporate explicitly technological feasibility constraints of the subsystems involved, while preparing at best the subsequent design problems. Most importantly, our approach allows to overcome several resisting flaws of the already existing algorithms.

A mixed-integer linear programming approach for temporary haul road design in rough-grading projects

Temporary haul road plays a pivotal part in achieving cost-efficiency and successful project delivery in heavy civil and industrial construction. Temporary haul road layout design has been empirically performed by field managers, superintendents or even truck drivers largely based on experience instead of science. Previous research endeavors in earthmoving research devised analytical algorithms to minimize the total earthmoving cost and developed simulation models to optimize earthmoving resources and processes. In the same domain, this research introduces an optimization methodology for temporary haul road layout design in order to facilitate mass earthmoving operations and improve construction performances on a typical rough-grading site. A mixed-integer linear programming model, integrated with a cutting plane method, is established for the identified problem. In particular, the cutting plane method is introduced to refine the optimization formulation by maintaining field accessibility and haul road continuity, thus ensuring practical feasibility of the analytical solution. Performances of the newly devised algorithms were benchmarked against genetic algorithms in solving ten test cases. Further, feasibility of the proposed methodology was evaluated based on a real-world case study. In conclusion, the proposed methodology is capable of tackling the temporary haul road layout design problem with high computing efficiency and delivering optimal results that are ready for field implementation. An energy integrated, multi-microgrid, MILP (mixed-integer linear programming) approach for residential distributed energy system planning - A South Australian case-study

The integration of distributed generation units and microgrids in the current grid infrastructure requires an efficient and cost effective local energy system design. A mixed-integer linear programming model is presented to identify such optimal design. The electricity as well as the space heating and cooling demands of a small residential neighbourhood are satisfied through the consideration and combined use of distributed generation technologies, thermal units and energy storage with an optional interconnection with the central grid. Moreover, energy integration is allowed in the form of both optimised pipeline networks and microgrid operation. The objective is to minimise the total annualised cost of the system to meet its yearly energy demand. The model integrates the operational characteristics and constraints of the different technologies for several scenarios in a South Australian setting and is implemented in GAMS. The impact of energy integration is analysed, leading to the identification of key components for residential energy systems. Additionally, a multi-microgrid concept is introduced to allow for local clustering of households within neighbourhoods. The robustness of the model is shown through sensitivity analysis, up-scaling and an effort to address the variability of solar irradiation. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Optimal structural design of residential cogeneration systems with battery based on improved solution method for mixed-integer linear programming

An optimal structural design model of residential cogeneration systems with a battery is developed using an MILP (mixed-integer linear programming) approach. A battery is introduced as a device candidate to increase operational flexibility of cogeneration units without electric power export. In this model, the selection from device candidates and multi-period operation of selected devices, in which various operational restrictions are considered, are simultaneously optimized so as to minimize annual primary energy consumption. For a battery, not only charging and discharging losses and an upper limit of charging and discharging electric power but also charging-discharging status and electric power consumption in a built-in bidirectional inverter are uniquely incorporated into the model. In addition, the solution method for this MILP problem is improved using a simple decomposition approach. The developed model is then applied to the structural design of a residential cogeneration system with a battery for simulated energy demands in Japan. The results reveal the effectiveness of the simple decomposition approach and the increase in the energy-saving effect of the residential cogeneration system by the introduction of the battery, as a consequence of the increase in the electric capacity factor of the cogeneration unit by the charge of surplus electric power. Moreover, it is shown that this increase strongly depends on the battery performances. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
