This paper addresses the self-scheduling problem of determining the unit commitment status for power generation companies before submitting the hourly bids In a day-ahead market. The thermal unfit commitment model Is formulated as a deterministic optimization problem where expected profit is maximized using the 0/1 mixed-integer linear programming technique. This approach allows precise modelling of non-convex variable cost, nonlinear start-up cost, ramp rate limits and minimum up and down time constraints for thermal units. Model Incorporates long-term bilateral contracts with contracted power and price patterns, as well as forecasted market hourly prices for day-ahead auction. Solution is achieved using the homogeneous and self-dual interior point method for linear programming as state of the art technique, with a branch and bound optimizer for integer programming. The effectiveness of the proposed model optimizing the thermal generation schedule Is demonstrated through the case study with detailed discussion.

In many staff-assignment problems, a large variety of requirements has to be considered when assigning employees to work shifts. As the importance of the requirements is often described in a hierarchical manner, lexicographic goal programming has been used to minimize the number of requirement violations. The resulting schedules are in general of high quality with respect to requirement violations but may lack acceptance by employees because of an unfair distribution of the violations. We introduce a novel approach for lexicographic goal programming that allows to improve an existing schedule in terms of fairness without deteriorating its quality with regard to requirement violations. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is demonstrated for a test set derived from real-world data.

Reverse logistics' research has focused on how to improve current operations to recover some value from supply chains that distribute and sell products that end up with a customer. For high-value, low-volume supply chains, particularly those operating on a contract-loan basis such as specialized medical goods, reverse logistics has a different value proposition. As with most unidirectional supply chains, these have developed over time out of necessity and without a plan or design to operate efficiently. As health care has become widespread and universal, they have grown organically into systems that are far from optimal. In contrast to traditional supply chains, chains working on loan contracts are inherently closed, as products must be returned for re-fitting and conditioning before the next loan, and thus any inefficiencies in reverse logistics will directly impact the business. Moreover, at the consumer end of the health care sector (that is, the hospitals), efficiency for the supplier is not necessarily seen as a priority. In this paper, we investigate two important logistic questions that distributors of goods for the health industry face today. First, what are the efficiency gains if the medical good distributor assumes the lead role in centralising some operations (e. g., in sterilisation policies) which are currently distributed and owned by health staff? Second, can new sensors and the Internet of Things (IoT) assist reverse logistics of medical material in improving services, lead times and bottom lines of hospitals and distributors, without impacting patient care? We introduce an optimisation model to calculate an optimal distribution schedule to address these questions.

This paper presents an analytical mixed-integer linear programming model to improve reliability of distribution networks through the optimal allocation of automated switching devices. Optimal reliability is formulated as a multi-objective problem of minimizing customers' interruptions and the investment costs related to devices' acquisition, relocation and operation. In order to establish the optimal trade-off between these conflicting objectives the Goal programming approach is proposed. The presented model considers post-fault restoration constraints which limit load transfers and thereby the system reconfiguration capability. Restoration feasibility is ensured by a linear formulation of power flow equations as functions of geographical locations of automated switching devices in the feeder. Therefore, the model's solutions provide a more effective and economic application of automated switching devices, so that voltage and system capacity constraints are taken into account in selecting optimal locations of devices. The proposed methodology was validated using the IEEE 123-bus test feeder.

This paper presents a hybrid stochastic and deterministic unit commitment (SDUC) algorithm which takes into account the variability of wind generation. The proposed scheme is modeled as a chance constrained optimization, where the system ramping capability, required to meet changes in demand and variable generation, is also considered. The day-ahead predicted net load probability density function (PDF) is modeled including wind curtailment effect. The PDF is then used to define the chance-constraint. The proposed UC is then linearized to maintain the mixed-integer linear structure of the problem such that, it can be solved by highly efficient commercially available solvers. Numerical simulations indicate the effectiveness of the developed hybrid SDUC formulation, including high penetration of wind power, and underline the competitive features of the proposed solution approaches.

This paper presents a coordination approach to maximize the total profit of wind power systems coordinated with concentrated solar power systems, having molten-salt thermal energy storage. Both systems are effectively handled by mixed-integer linear programming in the approach, allowing enhancement on the operational during non-insolation periods. Transmission grid constraints and technical operating constraints on both systems are modeled to enable a true management support for the integration of renewable energy sources in day-ahead electricity markets. A representative case study based on real systems is considered to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

We consider a problem related to industrial production planning, namely the multi-product discrete lot-sizing and scheduling problem with sequence-dependent changeover costs. This combinatorial optimization is formulated as a mixed-integer linear program and solved to optimality by using a standard Branch & Bound procedure. However, the computational efficiency of such a solution approach relies heavily on the quality of the bounds used at each node of the Branch & Bound search tree. To improve the quality of these bounds, we propose a new family of multi-product multi-period valid inequalities and present both an exact and a heuristic separation algorithm which form the basis of a cutting-plane generation algorithm. We finally discuss preliminary computational results which confirm the practical usefulness of the proposed valid inequalities at strengthening the MILP formulation and at reducing the overall computation time.

We propose a mathematical programming formulation that incorporates annualized hours and shows to be very flexible with regard to modeling various contract types. The objective of our model is to minimize salary cost, thereby covering workforce demand, and using annualized hours. Our model is able to address various business questions regarding tactical workforce planning problems, e.g., with regard to annualized hours, subcontracting, and vacation planning. In a case study for a Dutch hospital two of these business questions are addressed, and we demonstrate that applying annualized hours potentially saves up to 5.2% in personnel wages annually.

Although smart grids are regarded as the technology to overcome the limits of nowadays power distribution grids, the transition will require much time. Dynamic pricing, a straightforward implementation of demand response, may provide the means to manipulate the grid load thus extending the life expectancy of current technology. However, to integrate a dynamic pricing scheme in the crowded pool of technologies, available at demand side, a proper energy manager with the support of a pricing profile forecaster is mandatory. Although energy management and price forecasting are recurrent topics, in literature they have been addressed separately. On the other hand, in this work, the aim is to investigate how well an energy manager is able to perform in presence of data uncertainty originating from the forecasting process. On purpose, an energy and resource manager has been revised and extended in the current manuscript. Finally, it has been complemented with a price forecasting technique, based on the Extreme Learning Machine paradigm. The proposed forecaster has proven to be better performing and more robust, with respect to the most common forecasting approaches. The energy manager, as well, has proven that the energy efficiency of the residential environment can be improved significantly. Nonetheless, to achieve the theoretical optimum, forecasting techniques tailored for that purpose may be required.

With the development of the ubiquitous computing and large-scale information processing systems, the demand for lightweight block ciphers which is suitable for resource constrained computing devices is increasing. Hence, the methodology for design and analysis of block ciphers is becoming more important. In this paper, we use the mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) based tools for automatic differential cryptanalysis in a clever way to find improved single-key and related-key differential characteristics for DESL (a lightweight variant of the well known Data Encryption Standard), and obtain tighter security bound for LBlock-s (a core component of an lightweight authenticated encryption algorithm submitted to the international competition for authenticated encryption -CAESAR) against related-key differential attack. To be more specific, in searching for improved characteristics, we restrict the differential patterns allowed in the first and last rounds of the characteristics in the feasible region of an MILP problem by imposing different constraints than other rounds, and we partition the differential patterns of the DESL S-box into different sets with 2-bit more information associated with each pattern according to their probabilities. In addition, we show how to use the Gurobi optimizer combined with a known good characteristic to speed up the characteristic searching and bound proving process. Using these techniques, we managed to find the currently known best 9-round related-key differential characteristic for DESL, and the first published nontrivial related-key and single-key differential characteristics covering 10 rounds of DESL. Also, we obtain the currently known tightest security bound for LBlock-s against related-key differential attack. These techniques should be useful in analysis and design of other lightweight block ciphers.
