Constraint programming models for the hybrid flow shop scheduling problem and its extensions

Proper scheduling of jobs is essential for modern production systems to work effectively. The hybrid flow shop scheduling problem is a scheduling problem with many applications in the industry. The problem has also attracted much attention from researchers due to its complexity. This study addresses the hybrid flow shop scheduling problem (HFSP), which considers unrelated parallel machines at each stage and the machine eligibility constraints. HFSP is a well-known NP-hard problem with the aim of minimizing the makespan. Owing to the complexity of the problem, this study develops constraint programming (CP) models for the HFSP and its extensions: the no-wait HFSP, the blocking HFSP, the HFSP with sequence-dependent setup times, the no-wait HFSP with sequence-dependent setup times, and the blocking HFSP with sequence-dependent setup times. We also propose two mixed-integer linear programming models (MILP) for no-wait and blocking HSFPs with sequence-dependent setup times. The performances of the CP models were tested against their MILP counterparts using randomly generated instances and benchmark instances from the literature. The computational results indicated that the proposed CP model outperformed the best MILP solutions for benchmark instances. It is also more effective for finding high-quality solutions for larger problem instances.

The heavy-haul flexible traction power supply system (HFTPSS), integrated with an energy storage system (ESS) and power flow controller (PFC), offers significant potential for improving energy efficiency and reducing costs. However, the state of ESS capacity and the uncertainty of traction power significantly affect HFTPSS operation, creating challenges in fully utilizing flexibility to achieve economic system operation. To address this challenge, a classical scenario generation approach combining long short-term memory (LSTM), Latin hypercube sampling (LHS), and fuzzy c-means (FCM) is proposed to quantitatively characterize traction power uncertainty. Based on the generated scenarios, and considering the energy balance and safe operation constraints of HFTPSS, a stochastic optimal energy dispatch model is developed. The model aims to minimize the operational cost for heavy-haul electrified railways (HERs) while accounting for the impact of online ESS capacity degradation on the energy scheduling process. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed strategy and model is validated using operational data from a real HER system.

Heavy-haul railways (HHRs) pose significant challenges due to their substantial traction weight, extended train length, and complex operational environments. Heavy-haul trains (HHTs), equipped with traditional pneumatic control braking systems, must adopt cycle braking strategies on long downhill slopes. The varying traction masses of HHTs on these railways lead to diverse maneuvering characteristics, presenting challenges for drivers and dispatchers in unforeseen circumstances. To enhance transportation efficiency and mitigate operational complexities, a trajectory optimization method is formulated for determining the optimal trajectory of HHTs with different traction masses under complex conditions, including long downhill slopes, temporary speed limit sections, and regular sections. It considers the dynamics of train traction, braking, and coasting at each phase, optimizing objectives such as train operation efficiency, energy consumption, and pneumatic braking times. A linear weight search algorithm ensures punctuality, and the model is linearized into a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) form using segmented and stepwise functions to align with operational realities. Simulation experiments utilizing real data and various HHT configurations validate the efficacy of the proposed approach against alternative methods. This method offers precise trajectory optimization under complex conditions, providing valuable guidance for dispatchers and drivers in the heavy-haul railway sector.

A novel and efficient mathematical optimization model for multi-stage assembly flow shop considering post-processing

We addressed the multistage assembly flow shop problem with post-processing and makespan minimization, a production environment commonly encountered in diverse industries such as automotive, dental, medical equipment, and clothing manufacturing. In this context, we presented an innovative mixed-integer linear programming model with a position-based strategy. Our proposed formulation demonstrated remarkable efficiency when compared to the model of the literature. It achieved optimal solutions in 77.16% of instances, with an average optimality gap of 10.59%. This study constitutes a significant contribution to the efficient resolution of a practical and frequently encountered scheduling problem that has received relatively limited attention in existing literature. The findings highlight the crucial role of mathematical optimization models as valuable decision-making tools for scheduling within the addressed production system. [GRAPHICS]

This paper proposes an optimization framework to deploy a large satellite constellation. The proposed framework consists of two phases: the mission viability evaluation phase and the optimal planning phase. The feasibility of the constellation deployment architecture with given resources is assessed in the first phase. The second phase uses mixed-integer linear programming to optimize the satellite deployment plan based on a dynamic logistics model. The effectiveness of the proposed framework is demonstrated through a case study for optimal deployment planning of a large satellite constellation.

To address environmental challenges resulting from transportation sector's carbon emissions, replacing conventional internal combustion engine vehicles with electric vehicles is a key solution. Comprehensive electrification of heavy-duty trucks can promote the decarbonization of the freight transportation. The mismatch of supporting infrastructures is one of the major barriers to the deployment of battery-electric trucks (BET). BET charging behaviors and vehicle daily operations could influence the charging station planning and electricity distribution systems, which will cause the costs of upgrading distribution grid. This paper studies centralized BET charging station planning, considering the impacts of plug-in fast charging mode on the distribution systems. First, the BET model is proposed to capture BETs charging load profiles based on real-world operating data. Then, a mixed-integer programming model is formulated for charging station planning considering the upgrade requirements for distribution systems based on the BET model. After the co-optimization of centralized charging station planning and charging strategies of BET, the size of charging stations and charging schedules are determined. The results of numerical experiments indicate that charging demand from 50 BET can be met at current charging infrastructure technologies (>60 kW per charger) with a 37% reduction in the upgrade of distribution systems if incorporating managed charging strategy. Restoration model for unbalanced distribution networks considering renewable sources uncertainties

Extreme events cause blackouts, resulting in the distribution network being unable to obtain power from the upstream transmission system. In this situation, local distributed resources can be fully utilized to improve system resilience. A distribution service restoration model is proposed in this paper, where three-phase unbalance condition and renewable sources uncertainty have been considered. The network reconfiguration strategy based on traditional tie switch operation is adopted to isolate faults. To cope with uncertainty, the chance-constrained method is introduced to enable renewable sources to participate in restoration, improving load recovery level. The proposed distribution service restoration model is essentially a mixed-integer nonlinear programming problem (MINLP) with probability constraints. To this end, linearization method is introduced to convert original MINLP into a deterministic mixed-integer linear programming problem. A dynamic rescheduling and speed management approach for high-speed trains with uncertain time-delay

This paper studies the problem of rescheduling trains with speed management in uncertain dis-ruptions that lead to temporary speed restrictions (TSRs) in high-speed railway systems. The disruption uncertainties are that the coverage and speed limit value of TSRs change randomly over time, and the start and end times of TSRs are unknown in advance. First, a mixed-integer linear programming model is formulated to reduce the total train traveling times and improve the passenger comfortability. The solutions of the model provide simultaneously the optimal train rescheduling strategies and train speed control strategies. Second, a rolling horizon algorithm is applied in consideration of the disruption uncertainties. The rolling horizon algorithm updates and solves the model in every time horizon, according to the disruption information newly detected. Therefore, the train rescheduling orders and speed control orders can be adjusted ac-cording to the real-time situation to guarantee effectiveness. The rolling horizon approach is terminated automatically once the disruption ends. Finally, based on the practical data of the Beijing-Tianjin intercity high-speed railway line, numerical experiments are carried out to test the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed approach.

DEVELOPMENT OF A MAINTENANCE POSSESSION SCHEDULER FOR A RAILWAY

Maintenance of rail infrastructure is an important element in rail operations to keep traffic moving. However, maintenance causes infrastructure to be taken out of service, which impacts traffic flow. In this study, the requirements of a maintenance possession scheduler for a South African application were investigated and a proposed solution was developed. The main objective of the scheduler was to minimise the deviation of the train service on a subset of rail infrastructure while ensuring that the required maintenance was done. An application case - the railway infrastructure between Bellville and Wellington in the Western Cape province of South Africa - was identified. A novel mixed -integer linear programming model that could do possession scheduling for 24 hours on a microscopic level was formulated for this case, and implemented in the software Cplex, after which it was validated. Finally, several experiments were conducted to investigate the model's performance and the results. It was found that the model delivered optimal results in less than nine minutes, which makes it a feasible maintenance possession scheduler for day-to-day work in the immediate planning horizon.

Technoeconomic and environmental optimization of combined heat and power systems with renewable integration for chemical plants

Chemical industry mainly uses fossil fuels as energy resources and thus causes substantial amount of carbon emissions. Combined heat and power (CHP) systems have become an effective solution for reducing energy consumption and carbon emissions. This paper presents a bi-objective mixed-integer linear programming framework for technoeconomic and environmental optimization of CHP systems for chemical plants, accounting for steam turbine network design and renewable integration. The bi-objective optimization problem is solved to achieve a trade-off between total annual cost (TAC) and carbon emissions. Two typical quad-pressure and dual-pressure chemical plants are employed for demonstration. The results show that the optimal CHP system has a TAC of 21.1 and 18.9 million USD as well as carbon emissions of 50 and 35 kton for quad-pressure and dual-pressure plants. Both systems feature a sharp reduction of 33.3% and 42.5% in emissions and a mild increase of 26.7% and 30.2% in TAC when comparing with TAC minimization. Moreover, we find that gas boiler is mainly responsible for carbon emissions, and replacing it with electric boilers is an promising alternative for further emission mitigation. We observe that photovoltaics capital price has a significant impact on system TAC and emissions, while employing only carbon tax is unable to achieve deep decarbonization. Hence, we recommend combining system design, renewable technology advances, and carbon tax synergistically for chemical industry decarbonization. Our methodology provides an effective and flexible framework for further investigation of decarbonization.
