The Chebyshev center as an alternative to the analytic center in the feasibility pump

As a heuristic for obtaining feasible points of mixed integer linear problems, the feasibility pump (FP) generates two sequences of points: one of feasible solutions for the relaxed linear problem;and another of integer points obtained by rounding the linear solutions. In a previous work, the present authors proposed a variant of FP, named analytic center FP, which obtains integer solutions by rounding points in the segment between the linear solution and the analytic center of the polyhedron of the relaxed problem. This work introduces a new FP variant that replaces the analytic center with the Chebyshev center. Two of the benefits of using the Chebyshev center are: (i) it requires the solution of a linear optimization problem (unlike the analytic center, which involves a convex nonlinear optimization problem for its exact solution);and (ii) it is invariant to redundant constraints (unlike the analytic center, which may not be well centered within the polyhedron for problems with highly rank-deficient matrices). The computational results obtained with a set of more than 200 MIPLIB2003 and MIPLIB2010 instances show that the Chebyshev center FP is competitive and can serve as an alternative to other FP variants.

Centralized charging station planning for battery electric trucks considering the impacts on electricity distribution systems

To address environmental challenges resulting from transportation sector's carbon emissions, replacing conventional internal combustion engine vehicles with electric vehicles is a key solution. Comprehensive electrification of heavy-duty trucks can promote the decarbonization of the freight transportation. The mismatch of supporting infrastructures is one of the major barriers to the deployment of battery-electric trucks (BET). BET charging behaviors and vehicle daily operations could influence the charging station planning and electricity distribution systems, which will cause the costs of upgrading distribution grid. This paper studies centralized BET charging station planning, considering the impacts of plug-in fast charging mode on the distribution systems. First, the BET model is proposed to capture BETs charging load profiles based on real-world operating data. Then, a mixed-integer programming model is formulated for charging station planning considering the upgrade requirements for distribution systems based on the BET model. After the co-optimization of centralized charging station planning and charging strategies of BET, the size of charging stations and charging schedules are determined. The results of numerical experiments indicate that charging demand from 50 BET can be met at current charging infrastructure technologies (>60 kW per charger) with a 37% reduction in the upgrade of distribution systems if incorporating managed charging strategy. In the poultry industry, the meat market requires a careful coordination of the broiler chicken supply chain comprising breeders, hatcheries, farms, slaughterhouses, wholesale, and retail vendors. Aside from the inherent challenges of coordinating a supply chain, animal husbandry systems face additional complex tasks. The lack of integrated decisions within the poultry chain could lead to a production plan that (a) does not comply with the biosecurity standards required in meat production for human consumption at the farms;(b) violates the production and inventory capacities at the slaughterhouses;and (c) does not meet the demand of customers. To streamline the supply chain, we propose a mixed-integer linear programming model that supports production planning and scheduling decisions in broiler chicken production facilities. In addition, we embedded the mixed-integer programming model in a rolling-horizon scheme to improve scalability and to avoid the myopic effect of time-indexed optimization models that put too much emphasis on a specific time period. We present the results of a case study in a poultry company in Santa Marta (Colombia), where we reach profit improvements that range from 7% to 57% with a reduction in inventory costs that range from 30% to 60%, while simultaneously meeting stringent technical, tactical, and biosecurity constraints.

Materializing International Trade of Decarbonized Hydrogen Through Optimization in Both Economic and Environmental Aspects

As deviations in H-2 production capacity by countries become a considerable barrier to the realization of the global H-2 economy, international trade between countries with abundant resources and those with limited resources is required. In line with this trend, numerous supply chains between several countries have been planned, and associated studies have been conducted. However, the study which treats international overseas H-2 trade chains considering numerous major importing and exporting countries has rarely been conducted before. In this study, a comprehensive optimization for the overseas H-2 supply chain considering the three major importing countries including Korea, Japan, and Germany was conducted with mixed-integer linear programming considering both economic and environmental aspects simultaneously. Through the optimization study, the most feasible H-2 supply chains for each importing country could be verified according to years and case scenarios. Blue H-2 from Qatar turns out to be the most feasible supply chain for Japan in 2030, while green H-2 from South Africa is the most feasible one for other importing countries. In 2040, green H-2 from South Africa and Australia becomes the best one for Asian importers, and Australia finally dominates all the supplies after 2050. In the case of Germany, green H-2 from Spain is considered the best after 2040. Depending on the scenario, the difference in the selected countries and supply amounts is not significant, though the costs are varied. Ammonia turns out to be the most feasible carrier for H-2, and the total cost including the carbon tax ranges from 2.15 to 3.43 $ kgH(2)(-1), which is a range from the current green H-2 to the blue H-2 price.

Coordinated control model for arterials with asymmetric traffic

To alleviate the congestion caused by the tidal traffic and to improve the operational performance of both directions in arterials, this paper proposes a coordinated control model for arterials with asymmetric traffic demands in both oversaturated and unsaturated directions. The model utilizes a three-step architecture: (1) A mixed-integer linear programming model is built to maximize the throughput according to the relationship between traffic supply and demand as well as the balance between inflow and outflow. (2) A quadratic programming model is constructed to minimize the vehicle delay in the oversaturated direction based on Lighthill-Whitham-Richards theory. (3) A mixed-integer linear programming model is built to maximize the variable bandwidth in the unsaturated direction by introducing the relaxation variable. Furthermore, a three-step algorithm is used to solve the model and obtain the optimal arterial signal timing. Finally, a simulation model is put forward to verify the coordinated model. The results indicate that the model meet the asymmetric traffic demand through optimizing the arterial throughput, reducing delay in the oversaturated direction and maximizing the green wave bandwidth in the unsaturated direction.

Nash equilibrium inspired greedy search for solving flow shop scheduling problems

This paper proposes a new methaheurstic to solve the flow shop scheduling problem which is considered as an NP-hard problem for relatively high dimensions. The flow shop scheduling problems are commonly encountered in many industrial applications and manufacturing systems. For the purpose, a mixed integer linear programming model is presented to articulate the relationship between the objective function and the constraints of the problem. A proposed hybrid greedy algorithm based on the Nash equilibrium concept and the genetic operators is an attempt to outperform the classical algorithms frequently employed to approach the optimal solution of scheduling problems. In order to minimize the makespan criterion, various computational experiments were conducted for different size of the problem. Furthermore, a comparative study is performed to assess the developed methaheuristic against other algorithms. Simulations have shown that the proposed procedure is the most effective and robust.

Towards energy transition: A novel day-ahead operation scheduling strategy for demand response and hybrid energy storage systems in smart grid

Fossil fuel power plants continue to contribute significantly to carbon emissions, necessitating a transition towards cleaner energy sources. Despite the growing presence of renewables within the power systems, the incorporation of carbon capture technologies into the traditional thermal power plants holds great potential in emissions reduction. In this paper, the integration of renewable energy sources (RES) and coal-fired power generation units outfitted with carbon capture schemes is addressed. Multiple demand response (DR) programs and hydropower plants are strategically utilized to increase the power system flexibility. To effectively plan the day-ahead (DA) operation of the power system, a presumed market-clearing framework is adopted and modelled as a risk-constrained two-objective stochastic mixed-integer linear programming problem. The proposed framework helps to tackle the uncertainties related to RES and demand variations by employing a hidden Markovian process (HMP) technique. To simultaneously minimize the system's operational costs and CO2 emissions, an enhanced version of the augmented..-constraint method is employed. To prove its value, the proposed framework is devoted to the 24-bus IEEE reliability test system (IEEE-RTS). The system features substantial penetration of RES (exceeding 87% of peak load) and standard DR options capacities (less than 25% of peak load). The results show a 24% reduction in load peaks, an over 63% decrease in emissions, and a 17% reduction in the overall operation costs.

Considering the electricity market, data analytics paves the way for completely new strategies regarding demand and supply-side policies. In this manner, predictive analysis of the demanded power accuracy is carried out to boost profits and increase the penetration of similar demand response (DR) programs across all levels of end -user categories. Residential loads experience stiff spikes and unpredictable variations due to occupancy activities and environmental factors. To address this, we first propose a robust short-term multivariate -multistep forecasting framework that is resilient to missing or erroneous data, employing temporal convolution networks (TCNs). We then incorporate two distinct valley -filling indices to optimize the charging of electric vehicle loads according to DR requirements, showcasing the efficacy of leveraging artificial intelligence to enhance the utilization of clean energy resources. Simulation studies are conducted using real -world nodal residential loads with hourly granularity. The results demonstrate that the forecasting method is reliable for residential locations, even when dealing with highly damaged data. The case studies effectively fill the load into the valleys and minimize fluctuations in residential locations. Through the integration of emission -aware forecasting and optimization strategies, our study lays the groundwork for a comprehensive approach that not only improves economic outcomes and grid stability but also advances the imperative of reducing carbon emissions.

Assessing production fulfillment time risk: application to pandemic-related health equipment

Manufacturing companies strive to identify and manage the effects of unexpected disruptions (risks) on their production processes, which affect their performance and resilience. In this study, we propose a decision framework to capture the impact of interconnected risk sources, on the efficiency of manufacturing companies. The proposed framework utilises a novel mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) model to minimize the time of satisfying the orders while it considers the risk associated with suppliers and manufacturers. The MILP model considers the relationships among (i) material and suppliers and (ii) work centers to measure the propagation of risks throughout the production system. The proposed framework also utilises the Monte Carlo simulation to calculate the associated likelihood of delay and the distribution of the delivery time of orders. To show the complication of the propagation of risk, two distinct scenarios are compared. The first scenario considers zero risks, while the second one assigns probabilistic risk to the suppliers and work centers. The results highlight the magnitude and the complexity of the risk propagation from various interconnected sources through the production system. It also identifies the most vulnerable components of the production system affected more by various types of risk.

Novel method for welding gantry robot scheduling at shipyards

Welding is the most critical operation in the shipbuilding process and has a significant influence on the production cost and quality of ships. Therefore, the welding operation must be optimised. This paper presents a real-world welding gantry robot scheduling problem at shipyards, in which three gantry robots function in parallel. Welding gantry robots cannot cross each other and should operate over a certain distance to avoid collisions. To minimise the makespan, the welding tasks given by line segments should be evenly distributed among the three gantry robots. The welding tasks assigned to each robot should be optimally sequenced to minimise the completion time, including the waiting time required to prevent collisions with neighbouring robots. In addition, long welding edges are split, and the split small length edges are assigned to the gantry robots. This paper proposes a mixed-integer linear programming model, three-stage solution approach, and variable neighbourhood search algorithm to solve this problem. Experimental tests conducted on 20 real problem instances revealed that the proposed approach can reduce the makespan by 14% on average when compared with the conventional method.
