China's decarbonization goals have accelerated its transition from a fossil-fuel-based power system to one with a high penetration level of renewable energy, thereby stimulating a massive demand for flexible grid services. Plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) could offer a huge potential for energy flexibility in future power systems, especially in terms of mitigating high power peaks and power ramps. This work focuses on the flexibility assessment and optimal dispatch of commuter PEVs within a microgrid system. First, a virtual microgrid system including residential buildings, an office, distributed generation, and commuter PEVs was established. Second, a generic framework was proposed to quantify the flexibility potential of PEVs for reshaping the net load profile, along with several indicators to identify the flexibility characteristics in multiple dimensions. Third, a mixed-integer linear programming model was developed to schedule the charging and discharging processes of PEVs and calculate the flexibility indicators. This paper aims to explain the system configuration of the microgrid and the quantification framework and formulation of the optimization model. As such, it serves as the basis of a case study involving scenario and sensitivity analyses of PEV flexibility, presented in the companion paper (Part II). (c) 2021 Elsevier B.V. A sequentially preventive model enhancing power system resilience against extreme-weather-triggered failures

ABS TRACT Affected by climate change, extreme weather events are occurring with increasing frequency and severity, resulting in more and more blackouts. Thus, resilience enhancement is drawing wider attention from academia and industry. Nevertheless, most of the existing studies ignore the resilience enhancement operational strategies against the extreme-weather-triggered cascading failures. To solve these problems, this paper proposes a sequentially proactive operational strategy to enhance resilience against extreme-weather-triggered cascading failures. Firstly, due to the difference between the time scales of extreme weather events and cascading failures, the outage process under extreme weather conditions is regarded as a double-time-dimension process, including the weather disaster and cascading failures. Besides, given that extreme weather and cascading failures are random, the random scenarios sampling method is utilized to simulate the double-time-dimension outage pro-cess. Further, customized double-time-dimension process constraints are introduced to the proposed model to represent the correlation between extreme weather events and cascading outages. Meanwhile, by regarding the probability of outages scenarios as the weight of each objective, the proposed model can be transformed into mixed-integer linear programming. Numerical studies validate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method. The results demonstrate that the proposed strategies can prevent extreme weather from triggering cascading failures and reduce the size of blackouts, to enhance the resilience performance of the power system. The findings can provide some meaningful insights for system operators to adopt resilience enhancement measures against the extreme-weather-triggered cascading failures.

As an innovative alternative to ridesharing, flex-route transit (FRT) is widely acknowledged as a promising solution, especially in scenarios in which transportation demand is low or dispersed. This paper addresses the FRT planning problem with meeting points (FRTPP-MP), which conceptualizes each passenger's pick-up/drop-off request as a set of points (i.e., a cluster) containing the designated pick-up/drop-off point and alternative points (i.e., meeting points), stipulating that only one point in each cluster needs to be visited to fulfill the request. The aim is to minimize both the travel cost of vehicles and the walking cost of passengers by simultaneously optimizing the routes of vehicles and the selection of nodes within their respective clusters. We formulate the FRTPP-MP as a mixed-integer programming (MIP) model and develop an exact branch-and-price (BAP) algorithm to solve it. To tackle the specific challenges of cluster visit restrictions in the pricing problem, we design a tailored bidirectional label correction algorithm (TBLCA), which is further enhanced by a novel acceleration strategy. Extensive computational experiments are conducted based on benchmark instances generated from a real-life FRT system. The numerical results highlight our solution algorithm's satisfactory performance. Furthermore, managerial insights from a sensitivity analysis suggest that introducing meeting points can substantially reduce the costs associated with FRT. © 2025 Elsevier Ltd

This manuscript presents robust optimization framework with multi-objective approach for day-ahead operation of hybrid power system consisted of photovoltaic (PV) panel, fuel cell (FC) with electrolyzer (Elc) back-up. The multi-objective optimization model of PV/FC/ Elc has been developed by combining the physical and operational constraints with mathematical equivalence of affine forms as well as considering the uncertainties occurring in the load demand and PV power generation. As a novel contribution to the literature, three robust optimization approaches for scheduling the hybrid power systems have been presented through the conservatism approach. Moreover, the objective function has been described to integrate the different objectives as aiming to minimize non-supplied load, while maximize the utilization rate of the essential source. By this way, it has been aimed to accelerate the adaptation of the demand response strategies for the proposed system. Moreover, this hybrid scheme provides solutions to meet the power demands for the residential end-users located in off-grid areas or islands. The mixed integer linear programming (MILP) model is tested in GAMS v.24.1.3 using the solver CPLEX v.12 and the developed strategy is analyzed for different load patterns. Exact optimization and decomposition approaches for shelf space allocation

A B S T R A C T Shelf space is one of the scarcest resources, and its effective management to maximize profits has become essential to gain a competitive advantage for retailers. We consider the shelf space allocation problem with additional features (e.g., integer facings, rectangular arrangement restrictions) motivated by litera-ture and our interactions with a local bookstore. We determine optimal number of facings of all products in two aspects (width and height of a rectangular arrangement space for each product), and allocate them as contiguous rectangles to maximize profit. We first develop a mixed-integer linear mathematical programming model (MIP) for our problem and propose a solution method based on logic-based Ben-ders decomposition (LBBD). Next, we construct an exact 2-stage algorithm (IP1/IP2), inspired by LBBD, which can handle larger and real-world size instances. To compare performances of our methods, we generate 100 test instances inspired by real-world applications and benchmarks from the literature. We observe that IP1/IP2 finds optimal solutions for real-world instances efficiently and can increase the local bookstore's profit up to 16.56%. IP1/IP2 can provide optimal solutions for instances with 100 products in minutes and optimally solve up to 250 products (assigned to 8 rows x 160 columns) within a time limit of 1800 s. This exact 2-stage IP1/IP2 solution approach can be effective in solving similar problems such as display problem of webpage design, allocation of product families in grocery stores, and flyer advertising. In post-disaster relief scenarios, achieving equitable and efficient humanitarian logistics is crucial for the timely delivery of relief materials and the alleviation of suffering among affected populations. This paper integrates the dual objectives of efficiency and equity in conducting optimization research on emergency material distribution routes. It employs deprivation costs arising from material shortages to quantify fairness. A mixed-integer nonlinear programming model was constructed with the goal of minimizing transportation and deprivation costs, and a variable neighborhood search-based metaheuristic algorithm was developed. Using the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake as a case study, the algorithm was implemented and solved using MATLAB 2020b software, yielding the optimal distribution routes and costs. The experimental results confirm that the model and algorithm proposed in this paper are practical and effective in optimizing emergency material distribution routes. © (2025) by Aussino Academic Publishing House All rights reserved.

As the energy demand keeps growing with the world's increasing population, concerns have arisen about the carbon emissions that contribute to critical environmental issues. These environmental concerns drive many nations to commit themselves in pursuing sustainable energy resources. Different process integration techniques have been developed to achieve a viable energy planning sector. In reference to the literature review, the use of time-sliced based models in optimization problems is still sparse. Hence, this paper aims to develop a time-sliced based optimization model that can be integrated into energy integration models. With that, a multi-period pinch-based methodology (targeting, scheduling, and optimization) for electric power systems with the hybridization of renewables and fossil-based energy is proposed. The prospective framework is designed to meet the emissions limit, fulfil energy demand, and minimize the electricity bill. An illustrative case study in Malaysia incorporated with an actual billing system is used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed framework. The results show that it is capable of reducing the total electricity bill by 35% and achieving a 71% reduction of emissions by using solar PV as the renewables. (c) 2021 Elsevier Ltd. With the large-scale new energy connected to the grid, its volatility and randomness bring challenges to the power system increasingly prominent. It is urgent to study how to reduce or avoid the wind and light cutting load and evaluate the reliability of power system reasonably. This study introduces a stochastic production simulation algorithm utilizing interval probability. Initially, a maintenance strategy for the units is developed using the equal reserve capacity approach, and unit commitment is established through mixed integer linear programming. Next, scenario reduction is performed based on interval probability assessments, and the critical scenarios are selected for scheduling simulations. Lastly, through example analysis, the proposed approach demonstrates its accuracy and effectiveness, enabling it to handle a significant share of new energy integration and optimize power system operations. © 2024 IEEE.

Utilizing a Closed-Loop Supply Chain (CLSC) network to manage the apparel wastes is of utmost importance for the health of our planet, our environment, and our species. In this study, a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) model is developed to design a new apparel CLSC to minimize the total cost. The uncertainty of demand and different types of returns are considered in the model for the first time. In addition, a new hybrid robust possibilistic flexible programming method is applied to tackle the uncertainty of parameters and flexibility of soft constraints. Hexagonal fuzzy membership functions are utilized to represent the uncertain parameters for the first time. The application of the model for a Canadian company is also discussed. The results show that considering the hexagonal fuzzy numbers, to present the uncertain parameters, leads to obtaining more reliable solutions in comparison to the triangular fuzzy numbers. © IISE Annual Conference and Expo *** rights reserved.

Since 2023, Ecuador has faced significant challenges in the energy sector due to regional droughts impacting hydroelectric capacity and increasing reliance on energy imports. In this context, planning the expansion of the infrastructure that generates and transmits electricity to end consumers should focus on strategies that optimize the use of available resources. This paper presents a mixed integer linear programming (MILP) approach for multistage combined electricity generation and transmission planning (GTEP). The model employs a reconductoring strategy for existing 230 kV transmission lines, integrating higher-capacity conductors. The practicality and effectiveness of the model are validated through a case study of Ecuador's power system, which features a 21-bus system. The results confirm that the model provides cost-efficient solutions, with a projected investment of $4417.40 MUSD to diversify energy sources and reduce reliance on imports, a crucial step towards achieving Ecuador's energy independence by 2030. © 2024 IEEE.
