Flexible Joint Planning of Sectionalizing Switches and Tie Lines Among Distribution Feeders

This paper proposes an optimization model for the joint planning of sectionalizing switches (SSs), including remote-controlled switches (RCSs) and manual switches (MSs), and tie lines among distribution feeders. Considering a flexible installation of SSs and tie lines (i.e., deployment of SSs on both sides of a line and construction of external and internal tie lines on of a feeder), this model is conducive to developing an economic investment scheme while preserving the expected energy not supplied (EENS) reliability criterion. First, the minimum total cost of investment, maintenance and penalty for EENS is chosen as the objective function. Next, a route analysis method is introduced to analyze particular performances of different deployment schemes for RCSs, MSs, external tie lines and internal tie lines. Considering the differences between overhead lines and underground cables, the lower bound of the restoration time of each load is estimated based on optimal restoration strategies in different fault scenarios. Then, the joint planning problem is formulated as a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) model with the aid of algebraic operations to calculate the global optimal solution. The effectiveness of the proposed model is verified for several cases in a 54-node distribution system. Numerical results indicate that the proposed planning solution merits higher economy and lower EENS as compared to the schemes offered by other prevalent methods.

Short-term optimal scheduling of cascade hydropower plants shaving peak load for multiple power grids

Cascade hydropower plants which have good regulation performance and are managed by the dis-patching center of regional power grids are usually required to simultaneously shave the peak load for multiple provincial power grids, which is an important way of relieving the growing peak shaving pressure on power grids in central and eastern China. This paper establishes an optimization model for the short-term generation scheduling of cascade hydropower plants in regional power grids. In this model, minimizing the peak-valley load difference of multiple power grids is adopted as the objective function. In addition to conventional hydraulic constraints, the operation constraints of individual hy-dropower units, electrical constraints and head effect on the power generation are all considered to obtain precise scheduling. The original nonlinear and non-convex model is converted into a standard mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) formulation through several linearization strategies. The re-sults for the real-world case study indicate that: 1) the proposed model is computationally efficient with a calculation time of 326 s;2) the peak-valley differences of the Shanghai Power Grid and Zhejiang Power Grid decreased by 9.71% and 2.29%, respectively;3) compared with actual operation, the proposed model shows better performance in peak shaving for multiple provincial power grids. A novel location-inventory-routing problem in a two-stage red meat supply chain with logistic decisions: evidence from an emerging economy

Purpose This study focuses on a specific method of meat production that involves carcass purchase and meat production by packing facilities with a novel two-stage model that simultaneously considers location-routing and inventory-production operating decisions. The considered problem aims to reduce variable and fixed transportation and production costs, inventory holding cost and the cost of opening cold storage facilities. Design/methodology/approach The proposed model encompasses a two-stage model consisting of a single-echelon and a three-echelon many-to-many network with deterministic demand. The proposed model is a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) model which was tested with the general algebraic modelling system (GAMS) software for a real-world case study in Iran. A sensitivity analysis was performed to examine the effect of retailers' holding capacity and supply capacity at carcass suppliers. Findings In this research, the number of products transferred at each level, the number of products held, the quantity of red meat produced, the required cold storage facilities and the required vehicles were optimally specified. The outcomes indicated a two percent (2%) decrease in cost per kg of red meat. Eventually, the outcomes of the first and second sensitivity analysis indicated that reduced retailers' holding capacity and supply capacity at carcass suppliers leads to higher total costs. Originality/value This research proposes a novel multi-period location-inventory-routing problem for the red meat supply chain in an emerging economy with a heterogeneous vehicle fleet and logistics decisions. The proposed model is presented in two stages and four-echelon including carcass suppliers, packing facilities, cold storage facilities and retailers.

Shrinking and receding horizon approaches for long-term operational planning of energy storage and supply systems

To efficiently solve long-term operational planning problems of energy storage and supply systems, a near-optimal solution method based on the shrinking and receding horizon approaches was developed. A lower bound of the original problem is first calculated by solving a simplified problem, in which the number of binary variables is reduced and the related constraints are simplified. Then, a short-term operational planning problem, with a shrunken planning horizon length, is solved by providing the simplified problem results as the terminal condition for stored energy. Within this problem, the original binary variables and constraints are considered. The short-term operational planning is updated using a receding horizon approach, in which the initial and terminal conditions are provided by the previous short-term operational planning results and simplified problem results, respectively. The solution, obtained by connecting the solutions in all the updating horizons, is regarded as a near-optimal solution of the original problem. The developed method was applied to solve a long-term operational planning problem for an energy storage and supply system, which includes a photovoltaic unit and a metal hydride tank with a water electrolyzer. The results showed that the developed method could find a better solution in a shorter computation time than the conventional methods. (c) 2021 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

A hierarchical capacitated facility location-allocation model for planning maternal healthcare facilities in India

The present work on maternal healthcare in India is motivated by its current status emerging out of limited availability and accessibility of related facilities. Planning for the required maternal healthcare facilities, from basic ones to neonatal ones, is a tedious task from the financial perspectives of both users and the government. This problem has been addressed by proposing a mixed-integer linear programming formulation for determining the optimal number and location of these capacitated and varied facilities and also for the allocation of mothers-to-be to these facilities while minimizing the overall cost. Suitable additional valid inequalities are proposed to be incorporated into the NP-hard model for reducing the computational burden. For further computational advantage, a sequential approach is also proposed. Comparative performance of the proposed approaches has been analyzed using several problems with wide variation in the problem parameters' values. The sequential approach is found to be very effective and computationally efficient. The results of the sensitivity analyses with respect to coverage distance, capacity, referral proportion and fixed cost provide important and practical insights related to the mix of the facilities to be established. The application of the model for a district in India proves the suitability of the model in the Indian context.

Critical Propagation Path Identification for Cascading Overload Failures With Multi-Stage MILP

Cascading overload failures of transmission lines are one of the dominant factors that induce catastrophic blackouts. The reliability risk of cascading overload failures is significantly underestimated in traditional adequacy assessment studies. This paper proposes an evaluation model for the assessment of N-k contingencies as cascading overloading failures. The interactions between outaged lines in the propagation path are revealed with a multi-stage optimization problem. The objective function is to maximize the probability of the propagation path of cascading overload failures. Several linearization techniques are proposed to convert the nonlinear evaluation model to mixed-integer linear programming. A rolling search algorithm is adopted to improve the capability of the proposed model to evaluate high-order contingencies. The case studies on the IEEE 118-bus systems show that the proposed model enables the identification of critical propagation paths with probabilities that are a few orders of magnitude larger than those with the traditional method.

On the characterization and evaluation of residential on-site E-car-sharing

E-car-sharing concepts can play a key role in future urban areas as a new and sustainable transport system. When it comes to residential buildings, the added values of sharing systems are reduced parking space and increased use of solar photovoltaics generation on-site. This work proposes a simple and complete method to define residential building tenants' optimal investment and operation, switching from car ownership to an e-car-sharing system. A mixed-integer linear optimization framework describes technologies such as battery storages, solar photovoltaics, electric vehicles, and charging stations. Furthermore, different scenarios are defined and simulated in order to investigate and evaluate the economic potential of residential on-site e-car-sharing. It is shown that with the actual grid tariff design in Austria, the integration of bidirectional charging stations is not cost-effective if considering only the Day-Ahead spot market. The results show that integrating an e-car-sharing system in a residential building allows for fewer cars and charging stations with higher nominal power, reducing the annual total costs of the residential building tenants by up to 29%. On the other hand, the results indicate that e car-sharing systems can also lead to lower optimal installed solar photovoltaic power.(c) 2022 The Authors. Published by Elsevier Ltd. Intelligent computational design of scalene-faceted flat-foldable tessellations

Origami tessellations can be folded from a given planar pattern into a three-dimensional object with specific geometric properties, inspiring developments in various fields of science and engineering such as deployable structures, energy absorption devices, reconfigurable robots, and metamaterials. However, the range of existing origami patterns with functional properties such as flat-foldability is rather scant, as analytical solutions to constraint equations arising in the design process are generally highly complicated. In this paper, we tackle the challenging problem of automated design of scalene-faceted flat-foldable origami tessellations using an efficient metaheuristic algorithm. To this end, this study establishes constraint curves based on compatibility conditions for all six-fold (i.e., degree-6) vertices. Subsequently, a graphical method and a particle swarm optimization (PSO) method are adopted to produce optimal origami patterns. Moreover, mountain-valley assignments for the obtained geometric designs are determined using a computational approach based on mixed-integer linear programming. It turns out that the flat-foldable internal vertices of each C-2-symmetric unit fragment (UF) exist as C-2-symmetric pairs about the centroid of the UF. Furthermore, numerical experiments are carried out to examine the feasibility and compare the accuracy, computational efficiency, and global convergence of the proposed methods. The results of numerical experiments demonstrated that, in comparison with the graphical method, the proposed PSO method has not only a higher accuracy but also a significantly lower computational cost, enabling us to develop an intelligent computational platform to efficiently design scalene-faceted flat-foldable origami tessellations.

A stochastic programming model for the aircraft sequencing and scheduling problem considering flight duration uncertainties

This study presents a stochastic mixed-integer linear programming model for the aircraft sequencing and scheduling problem. The proposed model aims to minimise the average fuel consumption per aircraft in the Terminal Manoeuvring Area while considering uncertain flight durations for each flight. The tabu search algorithm was selected to solve the problem. The stochastic solution and deterministic solution results were compared to show the benefits of the stochastic solution. The average sample approximation technique was applied to this problem, and enhancement rates of the average fuel consumption per aircraft were 8.78% and 9.11% comparing the deterministic approach

Multistage Planning Model for Active Distribution Systems and Electric Vehicle Charging Stations Considering Voltage-Dependent Load Behavior

This work proposes a novel mixed-integer linear programming model for the medium-term multistage planning of active distribution systems and electric vehicle charging stations (EVCSs). Investment alternatives include the installation of conductors, capacitor banks, voltage regulators, dispatchable and nondispatchable distributed generation, energy storage units, and EVCSs. Hence, the model identifies the best size, location, and installation time for the candidate assets under the uncertainty associated with electricity demand, energy prices, renewable energy sources, and EVCSs' load profiles. Unlike classical planning approaches, conventional load is modeled as voltage-dependent. Besides, EVCSs are planned by zones to optimize the coverage of the service provided to users of electric vehicles and to reduce the discrepancy between the geographical requirements and the optimal locations for the installation of EVCSs in the system. EVCSs' load profiles are calculated using a travel simulation algorithm based on real travel patterns that consider fast, slow, and residential chargers. Moreover, as another salient feature, constraints for CO2 emissions are incorporated into the model. The resulting model is formulated as a stochastic scenario-based program, which is driven by the minimization of the total expected cost. Tests are conducted using a 69-node system to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed model.
