MILP Optimized Management of Domestic PV-Battery Using Two Days-Ahead Forecasts

This paper proposes an Energy Management System (EMS) for domestic PV-battery applications with the aim of reducing the absolute net energy exchange with the utility grid by utilizing the two days-ahead energy forecasts in the optimization process. A mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) exploits two days-ahead energy demand and PV generation forecasts to schedule the day-ahead battery energy exchange with both the utility grid and the PV generator. The proposed scheme is tested using the real data of the Active Office Building (AOB) located in Swansea University, UK. Performance comparisons with state-of-the-art and the commercial EMS currently running at the AOB reveal that the proposed EMS increases the self-consumption of PV energy and at the same time reduces the total energy cost. The absolute net energy exchange with the grid and the total operating costs are reduced by 121% and 54% compared to the state-of-the-art and 194% and 8% when compared to the commercial EMS over a six-month period. Furthermore, the results show that the proposed method can reduce the energy bill by up to 46% for the same period compared to the state-of-the-art. The paper also investigates the effect of using different objective functions on the performance of the EMS and shows that the proposed EMS operate more efficiently when it is compared with another cost function that directly promotes reducing the absolute net energy exchange.

We propose an energy management algorithm for isolated industrial power systems that integrate uncertain renewable generation and energy storage. The proposed strategy is designed to ensure sustainable and costeffective operations by managing the energy flows in the grid, and is structured so to cope with: (1) high levels of renewable power penetration, and (2) load profiles characterized by non-smooth patterns and irregular events (i.e., events such as those occurring from connections/disconnections of large scale equipment, or from large wind speed ramps). The proposed algorithm leverages a stochastic economic model predictive control (MPC) scheme capable of dealing simultaneously with the dispatch and scheduling of the local generation units. More precisely, the scheme embeds a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) optimal control policy formulation together with a stochastic programming approach. Moreover, the optimization problem accounts for multiple techno-economical objectives, such as minimization of operational costs, battery degradation, and non-utilized energy. We test the algorithm on a case study of an isolated offshore Oil & Gas platform producing energy onsite with conventional gas turbines and a local wind farm, while integrating a battery energy storage system. The results show that the proposed approach can issue ensemble predictions that successfully capture the potential irregular variations just by using recent past information of the associated random variable, even when no particular sudden events are anticipated in the near-future (i.e., step changes/trend reversals). In this way, the approach provides useful future information for the optimal management of the grid. This effect is numerically quantified via simulations that compare the performance of the proposed stochastic optimization approach against its deterministic MPC version in several realistic operating conditions. Reliability is an essential factor in distribution networkt expansion planning. However, standard distribution reliability assessment techniques rely on quantifying the impact of a pre-specified set of events on service continuity through the simulation of component outages, one at a time. Due to such a simulation-based nature, the incorporation of reliability into distribution network expansion planning has customarily required the application of heuristic and metaheuristic approaches. Recently, alternative mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) models have been proposed for distribution network expansion planning considering reliability. Nonetheless, such models suffer from either low computational efficiency or over-simplification. To overcome these shortcomings, this paper proposes an enhanced MILP model for multistage reliability-constrained distribution network expansion planning. Leveraging an efficient, yet accurate reliability evaluation model, proposing a customized technique for effectively imposing radial operation, as well as utilizing pragmatic measures to model reliability-related costs are the salient features of this work. In this respect, practical reliability-related costs are considered based on reliability incentive schemes and the revenue lost due to undelivered energy during customer outages. The proposed planning approach is tested on four networks with 24, 54, 86, and 138 nodes to illustrate its efficiency and applicability.

District cooling systems (DCS) are particularly important in the Middle East due to higher overall temperatures on most days of the year. The design, operation, and control of a new DCS should consider the abundant stakeholders and system requirements transformation using the system engineering processes. Integrating these requirements at an early stage in the system model is essential, specifically, the regulation on energy efficiency or system reliability;without such integration, the system may miss some important aspects and lead to higher energy consumption, lower reliability, higher system cost, greater CO2 emissions and may not satisfy cooling demand of the stakeholders. In this paper, a frame-work for DCS analysis is proposed by considering inputs, process (core), and outputs. The framework considers the structure and behavior of the DCS system to enhance system design and operation. The core of the framework uses a mathematical model in mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) to optimize the overall DCS cost by integrating the system and stakeholders' requirements. The results obtained from the application of the framework show that addressing the requirements reduces cost and increases energy efficiency, and when the cooling demand is variable, it might be better to have multiple capacities for chillers and chiller storage. The paper is helpful for the decision-makers to understand the impact of requirements and their management in the design, operation, and control of multi-chiller DCS in relief with the cost and energy efficiency. We present LB+IC-CMA-ES, a variant of CMA-ES that handles mixed-integer problems. The algorithm uses two simple mechanisms to handle integer variables: (i) a lower bound (LB) on the variance of integer variables and (ii) integer centering (IC) of variables to their domain middle depending on their value. After presenting the algorithm, we evaluate the different variants ensuing from these modifications on the BBOB mixed-integer testbed and compare the performance with the recently introduced CMA-ES with margin. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024.

This paper investigates the bi-objective scheduling problem of a flexible robotic cell capable of processing different types of jobs. Initially, a mixed integer programming model is formulated to minimize both cycle time and total energy consumption. Considering the NP-hard nature of this problem, a multi-objective evolutionary algorithm based on decomposition (MOEA/D) is developed. To demonstrate its efficiency and quality advantages in solving such problems, comparative experiments are conducted with the commercial solvers CPLEX and NSGA-II. © 2024 IEEE.

Artificial Pancreas (AP) is a technology that assists people with type-1 diabetes (T1D) in the challenge of administering exogenous insulin in order to maintain the blood glucose concentration in a safe range. In this work, we consider a zone Model Predictive Control (zone-MPC) with asymmetric costs, and we add to it the capability to plan and suggest the assumption of carbohydrates (CHO) to the patient. To produce sparse-in-time and quantized CHO suggestions, a mixed integer programming (MIP) formulation of the MPC problem is considered. The resulting algorithm is tuned and validated on the UVa/Padova T1D Simulator, an accurate model of T1D metabolism, approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for pre-clinical testing of T1D therapies. The results show that the zone-MPC + CHO suggestions allows to increase the time spent in the blood-glucose safe range on average, with respect to the insulin-only zone-MPC. This is achieved while consistently cutting down the time in hypoglycemia: from 1.2% to 0.3% in median. © 2024 IEEE.

A new and efficient distributed algorithm based on multi-parameter quadratic programming (MPQP) is proposed in this paper to realize distributed voltage optimization of coupled HVDNs and MVDNs. With the boundary variables between HVDNs and MVDNs as programming parameters, the proposed method transforms the solution of distributed voltage optimization model into the calculation and searches for the solution set for the parameters' corresponding quadratic functions, thus realizing efficient and distributed global iterative computation. Finally, the results show that our method can obtain a global optimal solution deviating from that provided by global centralized voltage regulation method by only 0.16%, and outperform the mainstream distributed algorithms in terms of the number of iterations and computation duration. © 2024 IEEE.

This paper addresses the significant potential of reconfiguration in renewable-based microgrids (MGs), emphasizing not only its practical benefits but also the computational challenges involved. Firstly, a nonlinear non-convex model developed for the optimal operation of photovoltaic (PV)-integrated reconfigurable microgrids (RMGs). To guarantee the optimality of the solutions, we further refine the model by extracting a mixed-integer linear programming model, achieved through the implementation of piecewise linearization technique and approximation. To substantiate the efficacy and importance of reconfiguration in MGs, comparative analyses of two distinct case studies-one with reconfiguration and one without are presented. These comparisons not only highlight the operational improvements afforded by reconfiguration but also shed light on the computational complexities encountered. Moreover, the impact of different radiality method selections on the computational time is explored. Our findings validate the significant role of reconfiguration in enhancing the performance of renewable-based MGs while also emphasizing the critical consideration of computational burden in the design and implementation of such systems. © 2024 IEEE.

This study explores the integration of reverse and forward supply chains into a Closed-Loop Supply Chain (CLSC) in the context of electronic waste network design and optimization in business and governance. It emphasizes the economic advantages and efficient management of Electronic Waste (E-waste), particularly in the context of End-Of-Life (EOL) products, as a response to the global E-waste crisis. This research introduces a novel mixed-integer linear programming model for an E-waste CLSC network, featuring hybrid manufacturing facilities and an objective function that maximizes the total profit to reduce disposal in landfills. The application of this model to a computer manufacturing network in Ontario, Canada is discussed. To this aim, the distances are calculated using Google Maps. The proposed model provides insights into the design and optimization implications of an electronic CLSC network. The proposed approach seeks to decrease E-waste by incorporating new and recycled components, with some recycled items sold in a secondary market. The findings offer a comprehensive understanding of product and part flows. The open facilities and the number of parts and products dispatched within each segment of the network are determined.
