Optimal sizing of renewables and battery systems for hybrid AC/DC microgrids based on variability management

This paper proposes an explicit approach to optimal sizing of the integrated battery energy storage systems in hybrid renewable AC/DC islanded microgrids, where the economic impacts of variability management (in concerning operational volatility and uncertainty) are comprehensively investigated. To quantitatively measure the variability levels at different time scales, two indices (i.e. volatility management index and uncertainty management index) are firstly proposed from the perspectives of system planning and operation. Moreover, the probability boundaries of both indices are derived to facilitate the initial system design processes. In particular, the concerned problem is formulated as a bi-level mixed-integer nonlinear programming model to counterbalance the variability and its induced cost at both planning and operation stages. Finally, an original decomposition-coordination algorithm based on the dual decomposition and alternate iterative strategies is proposed to ensure the efficient convergence of the solution process for the constructed mathematical model. Numerical simulations are carried out by analyzing the impacts of various factors associated with optimal sizing solutions and comparing with state-of-the-art approaches. Results show that the proposed sizing technique can facilitate designers finding the optimal capacity combination of renewables and batteries under preset renewables penetration, capital cost, and system variability levels.

This paper deals with designing of cryogenic distillation systems for the separation of hydrogen isotopes in a thermonuclear fusion process. The design must minimize the tritium inventory in the distillation columns and satisfy the separation requirements. This induces the optimization of both the structure and the operating conditions of the columns. Such a problem is solved by use of a mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) tool coupled to a process simulator. The MINLP procedure is based on the iterative and alternative treatment of two subproblems : a NLP problem which is solved by a reduced-gradient method, and a MILP problem, solved with a Branch and Bound method coupled to a simplexe. The formulation of the problem and the choice of an appropriate superstructure are here detailed, and results are finally presented, concerning the optimal design of a specific isotope separation system.

Designing a drone delivery network with automated battery swapping machines

Drones are projected to alter last-mile delivery, but their short travel range is a concern. This study proposes a drone delivery network design using automated battery swapping machines (ABSMs) to extend ranges. The design minimizes the long-term delivery costs, including ABSM investment, drone ownership, and cost of the delivery time, and locates ABSMs to serve a set of customers. We build a mixed-integer nonlinear program that captures the nonlinear waiting time of drones at ABSMs. To solve the problem, we create an exact solution algorithm that finds the globally optimal solution using a derivative-supported cutting-plane method. To validate the applicability of our program, we conduct a case study on the Chicago Metropolitan area using cost data from leading ABSM manufacturer and geographical data from the planning and operations language for agent-based regional integrated simulation (more commonly known as POLARIS). A sensitivity analysis identifies that ABSM service times and costs are the key parameters impacting the long-term adoption of drone delivery. (C) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Switched NMPC for epidemiological and social-economic control objectives in SIR-type systems

Several optimal control strategies have recently been developed to minimize the infected peak prevalence or the epidemic final size. Although these two indexes are critical to assess any control policy tending to mitigate an epidemic by means of non-pharmaceutical measures, they are usually considered separately and, in general, no consensus has been reached about how to simultaneously handle them in a simple and realistic way (i.e., accounting for the limitations in the control actions, avoiding new cycles of infections or reboundings, considering side effects, etc.) Here, based on a theoretical dynamical analysis of SIR-type models, a realistic nonlinear model predictive control strategy is proposed. Apart from minimizing the epidemic final size and keeping the infected peak prevalence under an established value, the controller accounts for feedback uncertainty and different actuator constraints, such as a limited number of social distancing policies, which may remain active for a minimal and a maximal time interval. Several simulations considering different SIR-type models illustrate the benefits of the proposal.

Optimization-based process synthesis under seasonal and daily variability: Application to concentrating solar power

We propose an optimization-based framework for process synthesis under variability in two frequencies. Low-frequency variability is represented through scenarios and high-frequency variability is modeled using modes. The proposed framework allows for the selection of different process configurations during different modes, a feature necessary to model systems under wide high frequency variability (e.g., solar-based technologies). The optimization problem is formulated as a two-stage stochastic programming model with mode subproblems nested inside each scenario. The proposed framework is applied to the design of concentrating solar power plants with thermochemical energy storage, leading to the formulation of a computationally efficient model, as well as the identification of a superior design. Optimization of loop-network reconfiguration strategies to eliminate transmission line overloads in power system restoration process with wind power integration

With large-scale wind power integration, the uncertainty of the wind power outputs will aggravate the transmission line overloads during the black-start restoration process. By constructing regional loop-networks, this paper proposes an optimization method of network reconfiguration strategies to eliminate the line overloads. Firstly, a multi-scenario set of the wind power outputs is constructed based on the extreme scenario method. Secondly, a loop-network reconfiguration optimization model is established to meet the requirements of the multi-scenario set simultaneously, where the line overloads are not permitted. Then, a two-layer solving framework is proposed to solve the optimization model. The upper-level layer is a multi-scenario mixed integer linear programming (MILP) model with the DC power flow constraints, whose objective is to minimize the operation complexity index. The lower-level layer serves to check the standing phase angle (SPA) constraint and the AC power flow constraints of the optimal schemes obtained from the upper-level layer. Therefore, the loopnetwork reconfiguration optimization model is alternatively solved by iterative computation. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by the modified IEEE 39-bus system and the modified IEEE 118-bus system, and applicability of this method to practical systems is verified by the southwestern Yunnan power system in China.

Outer approximation (OA) for solving convex mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) problems is heavily dependent on the convexity of functions and a natural issue is to relax the convexity assumption. This paper is devoted to OA for dealing with a pseudo-convex MINLP problem. By solving a sequence of nonlinear subproblems, we use Lagrange multiplier rules via Clarke subdifferentials of subproblems to introduce a parameter and then equivalently reformulate such MINLP as the mixed-integer linear program (MILP) master problem. Then, an OA algorithm is constructed to find the optimal solution to the MNILP by solving a sequence of MILP relaxations. The OA algorithm is proved to terminate after a finite number of steps. Numerical examples are illustrated to test the constructed OA algorithm.

A new coordination scheme of directional overcurrent and distance protection relays considering time-voltage-current characteristics

The power transmission systems are mainly protected by distance relays (DisRs) as a primary protection and directional overcurrent relays (DOCRs) as a backup protection. These two types of relays have a different operation principle that, sometimes, leads to miscoordination problems. In this paper, a new approach for DOCRs and DisRs coordination considering the DOCRs time-voltage-current characteristic (TVC-C) is proposed to fully eliminate the miscoordination problems found in the already published works. The coordination problem is formulated as a mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) considering a new proposed objective function. Furthermore, two new decision variables related to TVC-Cs are proposed namely: the type and the voltage control variable. An enhanced version of the hybrid GSA-SQP method is proposed to solve the developed opti-mization problem. In order to check the applicability of the proposed relays coordination method on small and large and more complex systems, the IEEE 9-bus and IEEE 39-bus are used for this task. The obtained results are compared with the published works which show the superiority of the proposed method in terms of satisfaction of all coordination constraints.

Reconstruction of delay differential equations via learning parameterized dictionary

Reconstructing the governing equations of unknown systems plays an important role in physics. Sparse modeling methods, such as sparse identification of nonlinear dynamical systems (SINDy), provide a very good framework to tackle this problem. However, SINDy struggles with discovering delay differential equations (DDEs) due to the curse of dimensionality in the candidate dictionary. That is, each possible discrete delay term in the dictionary should be regarded as an independent basis element, which makes the combination of exhaustive discrete delay terms blow up. To deal with the curse of dimensionality and further reconstruct DDEs, a variant method of SINDy is presented in this paper in which a parameterized dictionary is proposed. In the parameterized dictionary, undetermined parameter variables are included in the candidate function to cover a wide range of different functions. Then, the reconstruction problem is reformulated as mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) and solved by a bi-level algorithm in which the binary version and the continuous version of particle swarm optimization (PSO) are respectively adopted in two levels. Simulation experiments are performed in 5 test systems including 3 well-known chaotic DDEs such as Mackey-Glass system. The results validate the effectiveness of the presented method.

An integrated approach of train scheduling and rolling stock circulation with skip-stopping pattern for urban rail transit lines

Integrated planning for urban rail transit (URT) systems is a significant technique in URT operation to balance service level and operating cost. It is generally oriented towards transportation efficiency and solved in a sequential way due to the complexity, but ignores the service experiences among equitable passengers and the utilization balance among equal rolling stocks. This paper aims to study the integrated planning for an oversaturated URT line, incorporating the fairness in train scheduling and workload balance in rolling stock circulation that are measured by two defined min-max indexes. A mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) model is established to formulate the integrated planning of stop planning, train scheduling and rolling stock circulation, explicitly considering time-dependent origin-destination demand, first-come-first-serve principle and rigid capacity constraints. Due to the model complexity, an iterative searching approach (ISA) is proposed to solve the model, involving adjusting stop patterns, departure times and connections at the depot terminal. The performance of the ISA is evaluated by three cases with different time lengths based on the practical data from No.8 URT line in Guangzhou. The results are compared with the practical plans and the solutions solved by the two-stage approach respectively. It shows that the ISA can not only mitigate unfairness and balance workload, but also improve transportation efficiency. We also investigate the optimization effects and application conditions of different combinations of searching strategies in the ISA. Furthermore, the study on the typical case during peak hours shows more details about the optimization effects and mechanism of the ISA, which can reach a uniform state in both service level and resource utilization.
