Optimization of film-type optical fiber wiring design using mixed-integer programming problem

Optical fibers are among the most widely used tools in information communication today, and they have had an active development trajectory. Film interconnection is among the methods applied to optical fibers. However, due to its characteristics, the interconnection design must be done well so that each fiber satisfies several design requirements. In this study, we developed a mathematical model for automatic wiring design using film optical fiber interconnections. To design optical fiber routing from the top to the bottom of the film, we propose an exact solution method using a mixed-integer programming problem and a heuristic method based on the exact solution method. In this paper, we compare the results of our methods with rule-based methods and confirm that our methods are superior. For the experiments, we created sample data based on a previous joint research project with Sumitomo Electric Industries, Ltd. and used it. Additionally, we investigated conditions for wiring design, and this paper discusses conditions for obtaining more efficient wiring methods.

One of the ways to enhance the energy efficiency of thermal power plants is to increase thermodynamic parameters of steam. A sufficient level of reliability and longevity can be provided by the application of advanced construction materials (in particular, high-alloy steel can be used to manufacture the most loaded heating surfaces of a boiler unit). A rational choice of technical and economic parameters of energy plants as the most complex technical systems should be made using the methods of mathematical modeling and optimization. The paper considers an original approach to an economically sound optimal choice of steel grade to manufacture heating surfaces for boiler units. A case study of optimization of the discrete-continuous parameters of an energy unit operating at ultra-supercritical steam parameters, in combination with construction of a variant selection tree is presented. Resource optimisation using bandwidth-power product for multiple-input multiple-output orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing access system in cognitive radio networks

This study investigates resource allocation problems for a point-to-point multi-carrier multiple-input multiple-output cognitive radio network. Different from conventional resource optimisation problems, a joint power and bandwidth resource optimisation framework using the novel optimisation metric, namely bandwidth-power product, is developed. Besides, rate requirement of the secondary system is satisfied, and the interferences introduced to the primary users (PUs) are below threshold of tolerance. The optimal source precoding matrix is designed and two methods, namely the project-channel singular value decomposition (SVD) and direct-channel SVD methods, are applied to satisfy interference power constraints for PUs. Then the unified power and channel allocation problem is derived and found to be a mixed-integer programming problem. Hence, a sub-optimal and tractable algorithm with low complexity is proposed. The innovative idea is to determine the channel resource budget by selecting the best channels, where the criterion for evaluating the quality of channel is detailed discussed. Then the power optimisation subproblem and channel allocation subproblem can be performed independently using the Lagrange-duality theory and Gauss-Newton method, respectively. The simulation results show significant improvement in spectral efficiency by using this framework compared to classical power optimisation framework using the waterfilling scheme.

The paper is devoted to the stochastic optimistic bilevel optimization problem with quantile criterion in the upper level problem. A Logarithmic Method for Reducing Binary Variables and Inequality Constraints in Solving Task Assignment problems

This paper studies the classical task assignment problem (TAP) in which M unbreakable tasks are assigned to N agents with the objective to minimize the communication and process costs subject to each agent's capacity constraint. Because a large-size TAP involves many binary variables, most, if not all, traditional methods experience the difficulty in solving the problem within a reasonable time period. Recent works present a logarithmic approach to reduce the number of binary variables in problems with mixed-integer variables. This study proposes a new logarithmic method that significantly reduces the numbers of binary variables and inequality constraints in solving task assignment problems. Our numerical experiments demonstrate that the proposed method is superior to other known methods of this kind for solving large-size TAPs.

The purpose of this study is to model the car operation problem in multi-car elevator systems. The multi-car elevator system is such a system that more than one car is installed in every elevator shaft. To take its full advantage, intelligent car operation is necessary so that neither collisions nor reversal occurs. In this paper we will propose a mathematical model for the car operation problem in multi-car elevator systems. First, it will be formulated as a mixed-integer linear programming problem, and next a branch-and-bound algorithm will be proposed. Then, the validity of the model and the effectiveness of the algorithm will be examined by numerical experiments.

This paper investigates a covering time minimisation problem of the maritime rescue missions that arise in practical rescue operations in the context of Hong Kong waters. In this problem, a fleet of heterogeneous vessels is deployed at marine police bases to deal with emergencies. Once an emergency rescue request is received, the marine police should send sufficient vessels to arrive at the incident site as soon as possible to provide critical medical service to the injured or the sick. A basic question to the rescue missions is that what is the minimal covering time that marine police could promise to arrive at any incident site. The shorter time the water district can be covered, the more likely lives and properties can be saved and the better the rescue service is. To address this problem, this paper formulates a mixed-integer programming model. Considering the expensive computational cost, a two-stage method is proposed. Extensive numerical experiments and a case study are performed to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed algorithm and illustrate how our model can be applied to solve practical problems. Our study contributes to the stream of research on maritime rescue problem that is gaining increasing concern in recent years.

Managing supply chain risk and disruption from IT security incidents

Supply chain practices often put companies and their supply chains at risk. One of the most serious risks is disruptions. While many types of disruptions have been considered, little attention has been given to disruptions caused by information technology (IT) security incidents. Partner cooperation can assist in preventing or mitigating damage from IT security breaches in supply chains, where breaches can disrupt production, cause loss of essential data, and compromise confidential information. We develop a generalizable mathematical model that quantifies IT security risk in the supply chain. We then show how to find solutions for optimal risk reduction under several definitions of optimality: minimizing upstream risk, minimizing downstream risk, and minimizing global (supply chain) risk. We show how to develop curves for each of the above scenarios that indicate when extra funds should be spent on security, which security controls should be implemented, and when subsidies among partners are beneficial. ©Springer Science+Business Media, LLC 2009.

Click on a formula to ***, renewable energy sources are rapidly introduced to power grid because of concern for global warming and fossil fuel depletion. However, generating power from variable renewable energy, such as photovoltaics and wind turbine generators, depends on the weather conditions; therefore, balancing demand power and supply power becomes difficult with large penetration of them. One of the proposed solutions is to control power consumption of controllable loads called directive demand response. In this paper, the target device as a controllable load is heat pump water heaters (HPWHs) installed at a hot spring facility. The authors proposed an HPWHs' schedule generation method taken into account not only requirements from aggregators but also hot water demand to prevent from hot water shortage. We make steady-state models of power and generated heat of the HPWH and decide the range of amount of hot water to generate actually. Finally, we make a system to calculate HPWHs’ operation schedules taken into account users’ convenience and aggregators’ requirements by solving a mixed-integer programming problem. We show HPWHs’ schedules calculated by our system and the result of data we operated actually.
