High-precision motion industrial systems must satisfy tight performance requirements. Both positioning accuracy and throughput demands are typically achieved through improvements in hardware, thereby raising the bill of materials. A cost saving alternative could be to strive for a reduction in the hardware components needed, in combination with advanced motion control, to still meet the desired specifications. Particularly, in this paper, the possibility is analyzed to allow for resource sharing among several actuators. This results in a switched system, for which we develop a real-time MPC algorithm for optimization of both the input and the switching signals. This implementation applies to a fairly general class of nonlinear systems and uses a novel offset-free formulation in velocity form for LTV prediction models, to realize good tracking performance under the resource sharing constraints. We provide a proof of concept for this MPC solution on a high fidelity model of an industrial SCARA robot, where it is proposed to use a single amplifier to serve two actuators. The MPC solution is compared to heuristically switched LTI controllers, and the potential of the proposed approach is shown in simulations. Reported dynamic multi-satellite scheduling approaches for Earth observations show many limitations when operating in time-varying uncertain environment. They largely run over predetermined time periods and often offline, assume negligible execution time, improperly account for the passage of time during planning, remain myopic or fail to show "anytime" behavior. A novel approach to solving the dynamic multi-satellite scheduling problem is proposed. The open-loop with feedback DynaQUEST approach includes an event-driven controller monitoring dynamic situation evolution while supervising a co-evolving episodic scheduling problem solver. Reactive to real-time and delayed information feedback, the controller timely enables the problem-solver to stay responsive, interruptible and adaptive, taking advantage of emerging opportunities to timely improve solution quality. The problem-solver continually solves a new static problem shaped by dynamic changes and constrained by current resource commitments to adaptively expand the emergent solution. Problem model formulation is based on network flow optimization using mathematical programming. Departing from mainstream approaches widely promoting an exact objective function coupled with a heuristic problem-solving method, the proposed approach alternatively combines an approximate objective function and an exact algorithm. The approach embraces an extended time horizon relaxing myopic planning. Computational results prove the approach to be cost-effective and to outperform alternate baseline heuristics.

With the springing up of data centers (DCs) worldwide, their huge energy consumption presents a daunting challenge to the energy system. This paper considers DC's integration, especially DC's dynamic voltage frequency scaling (DVFS) and thermal inertia, proposing a novel optimal sizing method for the energy station in the multi-energy system (MES), which can realize the co-optimization of energy flow and information flow. Firstly, the MES integrated with DC is modeled. Based on DVFS and thermal inertia, the deep coupling relationship of DC's computing workload, electricity load and cooling load is delved. Then, the optimal sizing model aimed to minimize the total cost is established. Constraints include power balance, DC's computing workload balance and thermal balance. The problem is simplified to a mixed-integer quadratic programming one. Case studies based on a test system illustrate that the co-optimization considering DC's integration can reduce the total cost of the energy station by 7.2%.

The possible services of batteries are expanding within the scope of transforming electricity networks. In this study, the potential of batteries to increase transformer efficiency is revealed. It is aimed to maximize the transformer efficiency depending on the demand and the installed power of the transformer. Based on this aim, optimization algorithms that can decide on the optimal battery size are developed. The daily charge-discharge cycle of the battery within the scope of transformer efficiency is explained. According to the pilot site studies carried out, up to 22% efficiency increase potential is discovered in a transformer with the battery. Considering this potential, the use of batteries to support transformer efficiency is recommended as a new local service concept.

Voltage instability can be mitigated or avoided by coordination of appropriate control resources. In addition, to meet the power quality requirements, it is desirable to find the whole minimal-cost trajectory using available controls without violating any constraints. This is the trajectory optimization problem and intrinsically hard to solve in power systems because of the interactions between continuous dynamics and discrete or continuous controls. The hard constraints also add to the complexities. In this paper, the trajectory optimization problem is formulated as a mixed-integer quadratic programming (MIQP) problem which can reduce the computation burden. Due to the open-loop characteristics, this formulation will be subject to uncertainty and the system may not evolve as expected. However, the proposed framework embeds the MIQP formulations into receding horizon control (RHC) to compensate for uncertainties such as model error, disturbances, and noise. As a result, reasonable computation speed and improved accuracy are obtained.

One of the most widespread modern control strategies is the discrete-time Model Predictive Control ( MPC) method which requires the solution of the quadratic programming problem. For systems with binary input variables the quadratic problem is replaced by more challenging mixed-integer quadratic programming ( MIQP) problem. The objective of this work is the implementation of MIQP problem solver in a low power embedded computing platform with limited computational power and limited memory. The MIQP problem is solved using branch-and-bound method and the solution of the relaxed original quadratic problems with equality and inequality constraints solved in the nodes of a binary tree is found with interior-point algorithm. A simulation study of the reserve constrained economic dispatch problem for power generators with prohibited zones is presented. Simulation results show the applicability of the proposed solver for small size MIQP problems. (C) 2015 The Authors. Published by Elsevier Ltd.

We devise a model predictive control algorithm for impulsive linear systems with autonomous flow dynamics and controlled jumps. Thereby the moments of jumps are not fixed, but rather considered as decision variables. To this end, the complete system dynamics is formulated as a mixed-logical dynamical system after an appropriate discretization step. The resulting optimization problem contains both discrete and continuous decision variables, giving rise to a mixed-integer programming problem. The objective of the optimization is to steer the states into a target set. The stability is addressed through an appropriate cost function together with invariance conditions, as well as by introducing terminal constraints which are only enforced within a certain distance to the target set, thus, providing a trade-off between guaranteed convergence to the target set and computational complexity. The increasing demand for air travel combined with uncertainties has put additional strain on airport infrastructure and ground handling resources. To improve the efficiency of airport operations, in this paper, We firstly perform an in-depth analysis of the A-SMGCS dataset for Singapore Changi Airport, and then propose taxiing routing solutions for both landing and departure aircraft with involved departure uncertainty, formulating the problem as a mixed-integer quadratic programming (MIQP) problem. The proposed model considers the waypoint-based conflict checking, as well as incorporates anti-overtaking constraints, and head-on constraints exclusive for bidirected graph, aiming to minimize the taxiing time as well as the gap with the scheduled in-block time for landing aircraft and scheduled take-off time for departure aircraft. The presence of departure uncertainty prompts us to build a stochastic model, where constraints with stochastic variables are converted into corresponding chance constraints under designated confidence levels. Incorporating stochastic factors enhances the resilience and dependability of our solution. To evaluate the efficiency of our proposed method, we have elaborately investigated the computational complexity under various test scales, and analyzed how changes in uncertainty and confidence levels impact routing and scheduling solutions on a simplified Singapore Changi Airport network, which could provide significant reference for other work.

In this paper optimization of N-removal in sewage treatment is accomplished by exploiting mixed logical dynamic method(MLD). According to simplifying activated sludge process No.1 model (ASM1), N-removal dynamic models in continuously mixed, continuously fed activated sludge process (ASP) are established by employing expert experience about activated sludge process. Then predictive control approach is applied to optimal control of this process. The simulation results show that it can cover the relative expert experiences more widely by applying MLD to modeling and control of activated sludge process. These expert experiences combined with continuous variable model make model more precise and can get better effect of optimization and control. This study provides a new approach to the research of sewage treatment.

As the electric vehicle charging demand for highway travel increases, the charging operation is gradually becoming a significant challenge for highway charging station operators. Distributed renewable power generators could satisfy the charging demand by providing clean energy for charging stations. In this paper, a charging price-setting scheme for highway charging station operators is formulated. We model this scenario as a mixed-integer quadratic programming problem, aiming to maximize profits while achieving spatial and temporal shifting of EVs charging loads to consume renewable energy (e.g., photovoltaic and wind power). The numerical case study shows that highway charging station operators adopting the proposed method can effectively promote renewable energy consumption and boost their profits.
