Our work on integration of data and knowledge sources is based in a common theoretical treatment of "Integration Science", which leads to systematic processes for combining formal logical and mathematical systems, computational and physical systems, and human systems and organizations. The theory is based on the processing of explicit meta-knowledge about the roles played by the different knowledge sources and the methods of analysis and semantic implications of the different data values, together with information about the context in which and the purpose for which they are being combined. The research treatment is primarily mathematical, and though this kind of integration mathematics is still under development, there are some applicable common threads that have emerged already. Instead of describing the current state of the mathematical investigations, since they are not yet crystallized enough for formalisms, we describe our applications of the approach in several different areas, including our focus area of Constructed Complex systems, which are complex heterogeneous systems managed or mediated by computing systems. In this context, it is important to remember that ALL systems are embedded, ALL systems are autonomous, and that ALL systems are distributed networks.

model-driven methods are gaining momentum in the industry to develop software intensive systems. To be effective in quality and efficient in productivity, they require a strong toolchain with seamless automation. The DevOps approach can help reach this by unifying software development and operations with a strong focus on automation and monitoring. The aim of this short paper is to review automation tasks that are specific to a model-driven context and to classify them according to a typical DevOps lifecycle covering design, code, testing, deployment and runtime activities. Tasks are identified based on different industry use cases experienced in our research centre or reported in the literature. Some challenges are identified and discussed, especially related to the use of bots in a model-driven context.

The Digital Twin is considered as one of the key technology trends and attracts high attention in academic and application-specific publications. Besides the general understanding of the Digital Twin as a digital replica of a physical asset, many different perspectives and conceptions exist. In this paper, we will give an overview of different viewpoints of the Digital Twin and its related aspects. Furthermore, we describe a technological vision of a next generation Digital Twin and its application in the field of mechatronics systems. Motivated from a technical- and simulation-influenced perspective, we look at the economic aspects of the Digital Twin and give an answer to the question if the next generation Digital Twin will form an ecosystem. based on an exemplary lemonade production, a system of mechatronic systems, we show the main principles of our technical vision: a network of digital artefacts empowered by semantic technologies, the transfer of models between partners in the value chain and along the lifecycle as well as the use of models to generate new services - especially in the operation and service phase - like a Digital Plant Companion. model-based systems engineering (MBSE) is an approach to improve traditional document-based systems engineering approach through the use of a system model. In the current practice of system developments, there exists a large gap between systems engineering activities and engineering analyses, because systems engineers and engineering analysts are using different models, tools and terminology. The gap results in inefficiencies and quality issues that can be very expensive to fix. An integrated modeling and analysis capability was developed that bridges the gap. The technical approach is based on integrating SysML modeling tools with a process integration and design optimization framework. A capability was developed to automatically generate analysis models from a system model and then execute the analytical models. The integrated toolset enables engineers to quickly evaluate system configurations using realistic analysis models and automatically check requirements compliance. The capability was applied to a number of system development projects in industry, including a ground-based radar system. The integrated approach allowed the design teams to perform continuous design, analysis, and trade studies throughout the design process, and respond quickly to changes in requirements and design configurations.

Medical device regulators such as the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) aim to make sure that medical devices are reasonably safe before entering the market. To expedite the approval process and make it more uniform and rigorous, regulators are considering the development of reference models that encapsulate safety requirements against which software incorporated in to medical devices must be verified. Safety, insofar as it relates to interactive systems and its regulation, is generally a neglected topic, particularly in the context of medical systems. An example is presented here that illustrates how the interactive behaviour of a commercial Patient Controlled Analgesia (PCA) infusion pump can be verified against a reference model. Infusion pumps are medical devices used in healthcare to deliver drugs to patients, and PCA pumps are particular infusion pump devices that are often used to provide pain relief to patients on demand. The reference model encapsulates the Generic PCA safety requirements provided by the FDA, and the verification is performed using a refinement approach. The contribution of this work is that it demonstrates a concise and semantically unambiguous approach to representing what a regulator's requirements for a particular interactive device might be, in this case focusing on user-interface requirements. It provides an inspectable and repeatable process for demonstrating that the requirements are satisfied. It has the potential to replace the considerable documentation produced at the moment by a succinct document that can be subjected to careful and systematic analysis.
