Analysis and optimization of Asynchronously Controlled Electrostatic Energy Harvesters

Mechanical to electrical energy conversion employing variable capacitors is assisted by electronic circuits that can have synchronous or asynchronous architectures. The later does not require synchronization of electrical events with mechanical motion, which eliminates difficulties in gate clocking and the power consumption associated with intelligent control circuitry. However, implementation of asynchronous energy harvesting circuits with the mechanical-to-electrical converter can be detrimental to the performance of the converter when done without concurrent optimization of the mechanical device and the circuit, an aspect mainly overlooked in the literature. This paper carries out system level analysis of electrostatic micro-generators with asynchronous control and charge fly-back mechanism to optimize the useful energy generated by the harvester. Our theoretical and experimental investigations show that there is an optimum value for either the storage capacitor or cycle number for maximum scavenging of ambient energy via asynchronous electrostatic transduction. The analysis also indicates that the maximum power is extracted from the system when approaching synchronization of mechanical and electrical events. However, there is a region of interest where the storage capacitor can be optimized to produce almost 70% of the ideal power, taken as the power harvested with synchronous converters when neglecting the power consumption associated with synchronizing control circuitry. Theoretical predictions are confirmed by measurements on an asynchronous energy harvesting circuit implemented with a macro-scale electrostatic converter prototype.

In this study, a novel Ge-Sn based perovskite solar cell (PSC) with the structure FTO/WS2/ FA0.75MA0.25Sn0.95Ge0.05I3/MoO3/Ag has been designed and thoroughly analyzed employing SCAPS-1D. Drawing attention from the work of Ito et al where a similar perovskite-based PSC displayed a poor performance of similar to 4.48% PCE, in which a large conduction band offset (CBO) acts as a critical factor contributing to interfacial recombination and device deterioration. To address this issue, we presented WS2 as an electron transport layer (ETL) along with MoO3 as a hole transport layer (HTL), both possessing compatible CBO and valence band offset (VBO) with perovskite material. Through systematic simulations and optimizations, remarkable improvements in the PSC's performance have been acquired, getting a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 18.97%. The optimized structure involved a 50 nm MoO3 HTL, 350 nm FA0.75MA0.25Sn0.95Ge0.05I3 light-harvesting layer (LHL), and a 50 nm WS2 ETL. Bulk defect densities for the LHL and ETL were optimized to 1 x 1015 cm-3 and 1 x 1018 cm-3, respectively, significantly superior values than that of reported value in the literature. Particularly, the tolerable defect density of ETL has increased 1000 times more than the published literature. The interfacial tolerable trap density for MoO3/perovskite increased from 1 x 1014 cm-2 to 1 x 1016 cm-2. The study also explored the impact of defects on quantum efficiency, revealing a severe negative influence beyond a perovskite bulk defect density of 1 x 1017 cm-3. Light intensity analysis demonstrated a correlation between incident light reduction and device performance decay. Capacitance-Voltage (C-V) and Mott-Schottky (M-S) have been analyzed during the study. Finally, the total recombination of the optimized device concerning thickness has been analyzed along with the dark J-V characteristics. An Analytical Model for Energy Harvest Road Side Units Deployment With Dynamic Service Radius in Vehicular Ad-Hoc Networks

Due to the advantage of high data rate, low transmission delay and high reliability, the application of Long Term Evolution for Vehicle (LTE-V) has got more attention on Vehicular Ad-hoc Networks (VANETs). However, the fixed Road Side Units (RSUs), like Base Stations (BSs), in LTE-V have a small coverage, which need consume a large amount of energy to achieve long-distance communication. This could limit the LTE-V application in some practical situations. In this paper, we introduce Energy Harvest Road Side Units (EH-RSUs) in some low frequency service area instead of fixed-point RSUs (BSs) to reduce the cost of deployment and maintenance. Different from fixed-point RSUs with the wired electricity sources, EH-RSUs are powered by themselves and the service time is affected by battery capacity, charging speed, service radius and communication load, which need to be considered comprehensively. To solve these problems, we construct an EH-RSUs deployment model framework based on communication load conditions. Then, on the basis of this framework, we propose an optimization problem to minimize the deployment and operation cost of EH-RSUs and fixed-point RSUs, where the service radius of the EH-RSUs are taken as an optimization variable. Finally, a pre-deployment algorithm is proposed to solve the optimization problem. Simulations evaluate the validity of our proposed method. The results show that the energy consumption with the proposed method could be reduced to 60% compared with only fixed-point RSUs deployed.

An improvement-based MILP optimization approach to complex AWS scheduling

The automated wet-etch station (AWS) is one of the most critical stages of a modern semiconductor manufacturing system (SMS), which has to simultaneously deal with many complex constraints and limited resources. Due to its inherent complexity, industrial-sized automated wet-etch station scheduling problems are rarely solved through full rigorous mathematical formulations. Decomposition techniques based on heuristic, meta-heuristics and simulation-based methods have been traditionally reported in literature to provide feasible solutions with reasonable CPU times. This work introduces an improvement MILP-based decomposition strategy that combines the benefits of a rigorous continuous-time MILP (mixed integer linear programming) formulation with the flexibility of heuristic procedures. The schedule generated provides enhanced solutions over time to challenging real-world automated wet etch station scheduling problems with moderate computational cost. This methodology was able to provide more than a 7% of improvement in comparison with the best results reported in literature for the most complex problem instances analyzed. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. Increasing global energy consumption and consequent greenhouse gas emissions pose great challenges to the sustainable development of international human society. Electricity constitutes the largest part of energy carriers, and the power sector is identified as the key sector with great carbon dioxide mitigation potential. Therefore, power generation expansion planning (GEP) problem has drawn great attention due to its important role in global energy supply, renewable energy utilization and carbon dioxide mitigation. Several important issues, including renewable energy sources integration, operating reserve, deregulated power market, demand response and carbon pricing mechanism should be incorporated in a GEP problem. Energy system engineering provides a methodological framework to address the complex energy, economic and environmental problems by adopting an integrated systematic approach, featuring superstructure-based modeling, mixed-integer programming, multi-objective optimization, and optimization under uncertainty. Recent advances of these approaches in GEP problems related to the five issues mentioned above are reviewed and discussed in this article. (C) 2018 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Proposal of InP/AlInGaAs single delta quantum well for fiber-optic communications

In this study, InP/AlGalnAs/delta-InGaAs single quantum well for fiber-optic communications is presented, proposed and compared to the free delta layer even structure. The Al and Ga content and the thickness layers are self-consistently optimized using genetic algorithm. It is found that the optimization of structure confirm an improvement in the electron and hole wave function overlap, which leads to a significant enhancement in TE-polarized optical gain at room temperature. In addition, the transparency carrier density is significantly reduced by the insertion of delta-InGaAs thin layer which can be a necessity for fiber-optic communications. (C) 2017 Elsevier GmbH. In developing countries, the importation of synthetic ceramic particles for particulate reinforcement of metal matrixes is costly, so locally sourced and sustainable alternatives are sought after Rice husk ash (RHA) at 3-12 wt.%, glass powder (GP) at 2-10 wt.%, and stirring temperature (ST) at 600-800 celcius were evaluated for their effects on the elemental distribution, microstructure, and tensile performance of aluminum-7075 green composite. Response surface was utilized in the experimental design and statistical analysis of the experimental results for the purpose of determining the optimal combination of the three input variables. Yield, ultimate tensile, flexural, and impact strengths, as well as microhardness and compressive strength, are examined as responses. To optimize these parameters, response surface analysis was incorporated into the experimental design, modeling, and optimization procedures. Variation in experimental variables led to microstructural evolution, which in turn caused variation in performance. Response surface analysis (RSA) revealed that the input factors contributed significantly to each response, resulting in regression models statistically suited to represent the experimental data, as confirmed by the diagnostic plots. As a consequence of the optimization, a combination of 7.2% RHA, 6.2 GP, and 695 celcius with a desirability of 0.91 was deemed optimal. A comparison between the predicted values for the responses and the values from the validation experiment revealed that each response had an error < 5%. Consequently, the models are certified adequate for response prediction with a confidence level of 95%, and the optimal combination is adequate for the composite's design.

Model based Diesel Injection Profile optimization to Reduce Transient Soot Peaks

To meet current legislation limits, modern Diesel engines achieve low raw emission levels and utilize complex aftertreatment systems. Still, during fast transients undesired emission peaks may occur for both soot and NOx. These are caused by deviations in the in-cylinder conditions between the quasi steady engine calibration and the transient operation, e.g. during tip-ins. In this work a case study is performed to analyze the potential reduction of transient soot emissions during a specified engine maneuver. An additional target is to investigate potential benefits of a novel in-situ soot sensor based on the Laser Induced Incandescence (LII) principle which offers a high temporal resolution. Measurement data from a Diesel engine is used to develop time varying setpoint deviation models which will be utilized in a numerical optimization problem to determine an optimized injection profile. The modeling and optimization is carried out in parallel for both sensors and results are compared against each other. In the experimental validation the optimized injection profiles were capable of reducing undesired overshoots during transients with minimal impact on the torque response. Furthermore, the novel sensor allows to gain additional insights in the relation between input parameters and soot response, which is reflected by the obtained models and control action. © 2018

The influence of nanoparticles on gas transport properties of mixed matrix membranes: An experimental investigation and modeling

Mixed matrix membranes were made of polysulfone and Matrimid(A (R)) polymers, and SiO2 and TiO2 nanoparticles in order to improve the efficiency of polymeric membrane in gas separation and review the efficiency of membrane separation process, laboratory. The modeling results of selectivity and permeability of gases O-2, N-2, CO2 and CH4 were discussed for different membranes. Another objective of this study was to submit a report on the importance of the statistical analysis and modeling in design and optimizing mixed matrix membranes to separate gas. The D-optimal method was applied to model and optimize the selectivity and permeability due to the main parameters. The obtained results indicated that the permeability of all gases demonstrated an ascending trend when the nanoparticles were increased. Under optimized conditions, the permeability of the gases O-2, N-2, CO2, CH4 in the membrane of PSF (12)/SiO2 (13.82) was 2.49, 1.113, 12.82 and 0.885 Barrer, respectively. A statistical method was practiced in the current research to design, optimize and separate gas membranes through effective efficiency for different applications.

Cleaning of Coal by Multi Gravity Separator

India being one of the leading coal consumer, is striving hard to improve the quality of coal supplied to steel and power sectors. In the last 10 years, there has been hardly any improvement in designing of new process technology to beneficiate inferior quality coals. Owing to the stringent quality specification requirements of the end user industry, utilization of lower grade coals through effective beneficiation techniques has become the need of the day. Under these circumstances, multi gravity separator, can augment some solution through beneficiation of ultrafine size (below - 75 A mu m) coal fines. The present paper outlines an approach made for identifying the utility of MGS for treating coal fines below - 75 A mu m. A series of 15 tests were conducted by varying three operational variables such as Drum Inclination, Drum speed and its shake frequency following the Box-Behnken design. Effect of these parameters on yield percent, ash percent and recovery of combustibles to clean product, were estimated for each of the experiments. From the results obtained and with the help of RSM approach, levels of operational parameter were optimized to achieve the highest yield of 74.59%, with a combustibles recovery of 84.56% and the lowest ash content obtained was 19.22% from a coal of feed ash 33.5%.
