Enabling Open Development methodologies in Climate Change Assessment modeling

Models play a central role for climate change policy-makers, but they're often so complex and computationally demanding that experts must run them and interpret their results. This reduces stakeholders' ability to explore alternative scenarios, increases perceptions of model complexity and opacity, and can ultimately reduce public confidence . The Radically Open modeling Architecture (ROMA) is a Web service designed to address these problems by providing two core functionalities: the creation and running of surrogate simulations, which are fast approximations of much larger integrated assessment models, and a componentized view of models and stored model runs that allow clients to combine components to create new executable composite models. An Interpretable Deep Mutual Information Curriculum Metric for a Robust and Generalized Speech Emotion Recognition System

It is difficult to achieve robust and well-generalized models for tasks involving subjective concepts such as emotion. It is inevitable to deal with noisy labels, given the ambiguous nature of human perception. methodologies relying on semi-supervised learning (SSL) and curriculum learning have been proposed to enhance the generalization of the models. This study proposes a novel deep mutual information (DeepMI) metric, built with the SSL pre-trained DeepEmoCluster framework to establish the difficulty of samples. The DeepMI metric quantifies the relationship between the acoustic patterns and emotional attributes (e.g., arousal, valence, and dominance). The DeepMI metric provides a better curriculum, achieving state-of-the-art performance that is higher than results obtained with existing curriculum metrics for speech emotion recognition (SER). We evaluate the proposed method with three emotional datasets in matched and mismatched testing conditions. The experimental evaluations systematically show that a model trained with the DeepMI metric not only obtains competitive generalization performances, but also maintains convergence stability. Furthermore, the extracted DeepMI values are highly interpretable, reflecting information ranks of the training samples.

Methodology for Cycle-Accurate DRAM Performance Analysis

A new methodology for DRAM performance analysis has been proposed based on accurate characterization of DRAM bus cycles. The proposed methodology allows cycle-accurate performance analysis of arbitrary DRAM traces, obviates the need for functional simulations, allows accurate estimation of DRAM performance maximum, and enables root causing of suboptimal DRAM operation.

Integrating and managing complex enterprises requires understanding, partitioning and simplification of the complexity. Enterprise modelling supports these requirements by providing means for describing process oriented systems and decomposing them into manageable parts. However, enterprise modelling requires both a common modelling language and a methodology. The language provides common understanding on enterprise models across the industrial community. User guidance through these rather complex enterprise modelling tasks is provided by a modelling methodology. The presented methodology, the CIMOSA Business Modelling Process, follows the enterprise system life cycle starting with requirements definition, followed by design specification and ending with the description of the implemented operational system. However, in addition to this top-down approach, bottom-up and iterative modelling are both supported as well. This paper describes the CIMOSA Business Modelling Process as defined by the ESPRIT Consortium AMICE. Additionally, a graphical representation of the process flow is provided and the process is illustrated using examples from a pilot implementation at the FIAT Auto Division. CIMOSA has been developed by the ESPRIT Consortium AMICE as a pre-normative modelling language for enterprise modelling. Enterprise models may be used not only in decision support for evaluation of alternative solutions in enterprise operations, but also for directly driving operation control and monitoring. Therefore, enterprise modelling is complemented by an Integrated Infrastructure which supports the execution of enterprise models.

Parametric CAD modeling: An analysis of strategies for design reusability

CAD model quality in parametric design scenarios largely determines the level of flexibility and adaptability of a 3D model (how easy it is to alter the geometry) as well as its reusability (the ability to use existing geometry in other contexts and applications). In the context of mechanical CAD systems, the nature of the feature-based parametric modeling paradigm, which is based on parent-child interdependencies between features, allows a wide selection of approaches for creating a specific model. Despite the virtually unlimited range of possible strategies for modeling a part, only a small number of them can guarantee an appropriate internal structure which results in a truly reusable CAD model. In this paper, we present an analysis of formal CAD modeling strategies and best practices for history-based parametric design: Delphi's horizontal modeling, explicit reference modeling, and resilient modeling. Aspects considered in our study include the rationale to avoid the creation of unnecessary feature interdependencies, the sequence and selection criteria for those features, and the effects of parent/child relations on model alteration. We provide a comparative evaluation of these strategies in the form of a series of experiments using three industrial CAD models with different levels of complexity. We analyze the internal structure of the models and compare their robustness and flexibility when the geometry is modified. The results reveal significant advantages of formal modeling methodologies, particularly resilient techniques, over non-structured approaches as well as the unexpected problems of the horizontal strategy in numerous modeling situations. Discrete Mereotopology for Spatial Reasoning in Automated Histological Image Analysis

Discrete mereotopology (DM) is a first-order spatial logic that fuses together mereology (the theory of parthood relations) and topology to model discrete space. We show how a set of quasitopological functions defined within DM can be mapped to specific operators defined in mathematical morphology (MM) and easily implemented in scientific image processing programs. These functions provide the means to model topological properties of individual regions and spatial relations between them such as contact, overlap, and the relation of part to whole. DM not only extends the expressive power of image processing applications where mathematical morphology is used, but by functioning as a logic it also supplies the formal basis with which to prove the correctness of implemented algorithms as well as providing the computational basis to mechanically reason about segmented digital images using automated reasoning programs. In particular, we show how DM can supply a model-based and algorithmic context to the otherwise blind pixel-based image processing routines still dominating conventional imaging approaches. A number of worked examples drawn from the, histological domain are given, including segmentation of cells in culture, identifying basal cell layers from stratified epithelia sections, and cell sorting in blood smears.

Registration and modeling From Spaced and Misaligned Image Volumes

We address the problem of object modeling from 3D and 3D+T data made up of images, which contain different parts of an object of interest, are separated by large spaces, and are misaligned with respect to each other. These images have only a limited number of intersections, hence making their registration particularly challenging. Furthermore, such data may result from various medical imaging modalities and can, therefore, present very diverse spatial configurations. Previous methods perform registration and object modeling (segmentation and interpolation) sequentially. However, sequential registration is ill-suited for the case of images with few intersections. We propose a new methodology, which, regardless of the spatial configuration of the data, performs the three stages of registration, segmentation, and shape interpolation from spaced and misaligned images simultaneously. We integrate these three processes in a level set framework, in order to benefit from their synergistic interactions. We also propose a new registration method that exploits segmentation information rather than pixel intensities, and that accounts for the global shape of the object of interest, for increased robustness and accuracy. The accuracy of registration is compared against traditional mutual information based methods, and the total modeling framework is assessed against traditional sequential processing and validated on artificial, CT, and MRI data.

CD++: a toolkit to develop DEVS models

The features of a toolkit for modeling and simulation based on the DEVS formalism are presented. The tool is built as a set of independent software pieces running on different platforms. Not only are the main characteristics of the environment presented, a focus on its use is also considered by inclusion of application examples for a variety of problems. Many models can be defined in an automated fashion, simplifying the construction of new models and easing their verification. The use of this formal approach has allowed the development of safe and cost-effective simulations, significantly reducing development time. Copyright(C) 2002 John Wiley Sons, Ltd.

SimSketch: Multiagent Simulations Based on Learner-Created Sketches for Early Science Education

This paper presents an approach to create simulations of science phenomena based on sketches. SimSketch, an integrated drawing and modeling tool, allows students to create sketches and apply behaviors to elements of their drawing. A multiagent simulation engine interprets and executes the model, thus building an intuitively usable and motivating learning environment to build and explore simulations of scientific phenomena.
