Long term evolution constitutes the next generation cellular network beyond 3G that is designed to support the explosion in demand for bandwidth-hungry multimedia services in wireless networks by providing an extremely high performance radio access technology. To support multimedia broadcast/multicast services (MBMS), long term evolution offers the functionality to transmit MBMS over a single frequency network, where a time-synchronized common waveform is transmitted from multiple cells for a given duration. This enables over-the-air combining, thus significantly improving the spectral efficiency (SE) compared with conventional MBMS operations. In MBMS over a single frequency network transmissions, the achieved SE is mainly determined by the modulation and coding scheme selected. This study proposes and evaluates four approaches for the selection of the modulation and coding scheme. Each approach corresponds to different users' distribution and multimedia traffic conditions. On the basis of SE measurements, we determine the approach that either maximizes or achieves a target SE for the corresponding users' distribution and traffic conditions. In this paper, we propose an indoor image sensor communication (ISC) system comprising an attentive indoor environment in which rolling-shutter cameras (including smart phone cameras) are used to receive data from light sources. The challenges of intended system mainly come from the receiver side, including its rolling shutter mechanism, its low and time-variant frame rate (e. g., no greater than 30 fps), and the narrow bandwidth response (i. e. several kHz baseband). Also, the requirements of flicker-free modulation enabling the dimming capacity, and indoor distance (i. e., up to 10 m) are unmitigated challenges. To resolve all mentioned challenges, we propose new hybrid modulation schemes, including M-ary frequency-shift keying (M-FSK) modulation and a hybrid modulation of M-FSK and phase-shift keying (2-PSK) for ISC. Simulation, numerical analysis and experiment results are given to illustrate the feasibility of the intended system.

This paper presents the effect of joint modulation and coding scheme (MCS) selection on a turbo soft interference canceller (SIC) for OFDM-MIMO multiplexing using adaptive modulation and coding (AMC). We use a turbo SIC to detect signals by performing iterative interference cancellation using soft-symbol estimates based on the a posteriori log-likelihood ratio (LLR) at the Max-Log-MAP decoder output and linear minimum mean-square error (LMMSE)-based signal detection. Joint MCS section selects the best MCS combinations of all transmission streams so that the total throughput is maximized considering the residual interference from other streams for the turbo SIC. Computer simulations show that the joint MCS selection mitigates the decrease in throughput due to the large difference in the peak data rate between consecutive MCSs compared to independent MCS selection. Hence, we show that by using joint MCS selection, the total throughput with the number of MCSs of N-MCS = 8 becomes almost identical to that for N-MCS = 12 for 4-by-4 MIMO multiplexing using the turbo SIC.

In accordance with the channel status information, modulation and coding method can be changed adaptively to enhance the throughput in Long Term Evolution Time Division Duplexing (LTE TDD) system. With the scheme of Exponential Effective SNR Mapping (EESM) and Mutual Information Effective SNR Mapping (MIESM), two Adaptive modulation and coding mechanisms are proposed in this paper. Simulation results show that the performance on network throughput can be improved effectively both in the ideal channel and multi-path channel environment.

The increasing number of wireless devices exchanging high quality digital multimedia content within the home necessitates high rate, reliable transmission technologies, like IEEE 802.11n. Though providing very high throughput. IEEE 802.11n is not perfectly adapted to the requirements of a wireless multimedia transmission. However, the IEEE 802.11n amendment;allows for efficient adaptation of modulation and coding schemes (MCS) to optimize achievable throughput and to fulfill quality of service requirements without any effort for the user. This paper describes an MCS adaptation scheme using information from both PHY and MAC layer with the objective to choose the optimal MCS in an autonomous, fast and robust way which can be applied to both a single link and an entire network. In contrast to existing adaptation schemes, it accounts for volatile channel conditions as well as increased collision probability in dense wireless borne networks.

MCS selection exploiting femtocell utilization in multicast transmissions

Multicast-Broadcast over Single Frequency Network (MBSFN) technology, as introduced by the Long Term Evolution Advanced group, is expected to be part of the upcoming cellular systems offering resource efficiency to broadcast services. MBSFN transmission is suitable to serve multicast groups searching the same content. In addition, the fast emerging technology of femtocells networks and their hybrid nature can lead to efficient resource sharing between non-subscribed users when located inside their coverage. The focus of this manuscript is 2-fold;firstly, we have contacted simulation experiments to compare the MBSFN transmission with the traditional Point-To-Point transmission for various femtocell distributions and network topology changes;secondly, a novel multicast transmissions mechanism is proposed from non-subscribed users who exploit femtocells resources for broadcast services, without limiting user's data requirements. The simulation results lead to a significant system's performance in terms of average throughput, total capacity, and energy consumption.

Ant colony learning method for joint MCS and resource block allocation in LTE Femtocell downlink for multimedia applications with QoS guarantees

With the emergence of bandwidth-intensive online mobile multimedia applications in wireless networks, in order to make mobile users enjoy better Quality of Service (QoS) under the conditions of limited resources, efficient radio spectrum resource allocation schemes are always desirable. This paper addresses the problem of joint Resource Block (RB) allocation and modulation-and-coding scheme (MCS) selection in LTE femtocell DownLink (DL) for mobile multimedia applications. We first formulate the problem as an Integer Linear Program (ILP) whose objective is to minimize the number of allocated RBs of a closed femtocell, while guaranteeing minimum throughput for each user. In view of the NP-hardness of the ILP, we then propose an intelligent optimization learning algorithm called ACO-HM algorithm with reduced polynomial time complexity. The Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) learning algorithm exhibits better performance in machine learning and supports parallel search for the RB allocation, while the Harmonic Mean (HM) method is to select a more appropriate MCS than the MINimum/MAXimum MCS selection schemes (MIN/MAX). Simulation results show that compared with the ACO-MIN algorithm and the ACO-MAX algorithm, the proposed ACO-HM learning algorithm achieves better performance with fewer RBs and better QoS guarantees.

This paper proposes a practical throughput upper bound that considers physical layer techniques using adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) multiplexing. The proposed upper bound is computed from the modulation and coding scheme (MCS) that provides the maximum throughput considering the required block error rate (BLER) at the respective received signal-to-noise power ratios as a constraint. Then, based on the practical throughput upper bound, we present the causes of impairment for selecting the best MCS based on the computed mutual information for OFDM MIMO multiplexing. More specifically, through the evaluations, we investigate the effect of MCS selection error on an increasing maximum Doppler frequency due to the round trip delay time and the effect of channel estimation error of maximum likelihood detection associated with reference signal based channel estimation.

Throughput enhancement of RIS and STARRIS using adaptive modulation and coding for 6G systems

In this article, the throughput of reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) is improved using adaptive modulation and coding (AMC). The best modulation and coding scheme (MCS) is selected at the transmitter using the instantaneous signal to noise ratio (SNR) measured at the receiver and sent back on the feedback channel. RIS is placed between the transmitter and the receiver so that the SNR is maximised at the receiver side as RIS reflections are combined coherently at the receiver and results in significant spatial diversity. All reflections on RIS have a zero phase at the receiver. We show that RIS using AMC offers a larger throughput than conventional RIS with fixed MCS for all SNR range. RIS with AMC offers 48, 42, 36, 30, 24, 18 dB gain for N = 256, 128, 64, 32, 16, 8 reflectors. We obtained 10 dB gain when RIS uses AMC versus 256-QAM. We also improve the throughput of Simultaneously Transmitting And Reflecting RIS (STARRIS) using AMC. We obtained 13 dB gain when STARRIS uses AMC versus 256-QAM.

Energy-Efficient Resource Allocation and Scheduling for Multicast of Scalable Video Over Wireless Networks

In this paper, we investigate optimal resource allocation and scheduling for scalable video multicast over wireless networks. The wireless video multicasting is a best-effort service which has limited transmission energy and channel access time. To cater for multi-resolution videos to heterogeneous clients and for channel adaptation, we adopt scalable video coding (SVC) with spatial, temporal and quality scalabilities. Our scalable video multicast system consists of a channel probing stage to gather the channel state information and a transmission stage to multicast videos to clients. We formulate the optimal resource allocation problem by maximizing the video quality of the clients subject to transmission energy and channel access constraints. We show that the problem is a joint optimization of the selection of modulation and coding scheme (MCS), and the transmission power allocation. By imposing a quality-of-service (QoS) constraint on the packet loss rate, we simplify the original problem to a binary knapsack problem which can be solved by a dynamic programming approach. Specifically, we first propose a multicast scheduling scheme based on the quality impact of each SVC layer. Guided by the content-aware multicast scheduling, we optimize the resource allocation for each SVC layer sequentially. Solution at each step takes into account of the channel condition, remaining resources, and client requirements. The proposed scheme is of linear complexity and leads to the maximized video quality for the admitted clients, while satisfying the energy budget and channel access constraints. Experiment results demonstrate that our scheme achieves notable video quality improvements for multicast clients, when compared to the state-of-the-art video multicast method.
