The EFMPlus is the run-length-limited modulation code adopted for the DVD. Enhanced performance can be obtained by using equalizers that exploit the d=2 constraint of this code. Two such equalizers ate presented and their performance evaluated using modeling and simulations. The use of this equalization strategy avoids the Viterbi detector, and optimal detection is provided by used of only a comparator.

In bit patterned magnetic recording (BPMR), The two-dimensional (2D) interference composed of inter-symbol and inter-track interference is a major problem especially at high areal density (AD). One way to alleviate the destructive effect of 2D interference is to deploy a 2D coding scheme on an input data sequence before recording in order to avoid some data patterns that easily cause an error at the data readback process. However, some coding schemes generate high complexity. Consequently, this paper proposes a new low-complexity modulation code with redundant bits to eliminate the data patterns leading to severe 2D interference and compare overall system performance. Experimental results indicate that the system with the proposed code is superior to that without coding, especially when the AD is high and/or the position jitter is large.

Automatic water feature delineation from satellite imagery is a challenging task due to the variability of sensor parameters, acquisition conditions, and geographical heterogeneity of scenes. To mitigate above challenges, we proposed a fully automatic method for surface water feature dilatation from the moderate resolution satellite imagery through the integration of adaptive and automatic training sample collection by a modulated spectral reflectance curve and one-class classification algorithm. The specific modulation codes that are partially able to represent water features have been chosen to collect positive training samples for the target class. In addition, one-class classification algorithm has applied to classify multispectral imagery, and it utilized the collected datasets as the positive-labeled training samples for the target class. The novelty of the proposed approach is that it's applicable to several moderate resolution sensors having SWIR, NIR, Red, and Green spectral bands. We evaluated the robustness of the proposed method on different multispectral earth observation sensors (Landsat 8OLI, LISS-III IRS-P6, and Sentinel 2A MSI) having heterogeneous acquisition environments. We achieved the overall accuracy on test sites ranges from 93.90 % to 97.27 %, and kappa statistics is ranges from 0.7622 to 0.9453.

This paper presents the new development of the signal waveform modulation optical disc. The signal waveform modulation optical disc is realized through inserting a sub-pit/sub-land into an original land/pit. More storage states are realized with changing the size and position of the sub-pits/sub-lands, which influence the corresponding readout signal waveforms. modulation code and its realization are key technologies for signal waveform modulation optical disc. In this study, we employ maximum run transition code and level modulation process as the modulation code of signal waveform modulation optical disc. A 5/6MTR (2, 10) code is designed as the first step of the proposed modulation code, and the level modulation process are used to avoid multilevel on shortest runs. The realization process of the proposed code is presented, and the maximum level numbers for different run-length marks are investigated with the calculated readout signals.

A simulator based on the scalar diffraction theory is developed. Its validity is confirmed by comparison with the experimental results for 4.7 GB DVD-RAM. The simulator indicates that adopting the (1,7)RLL code and the PRML method leads to a 29.5 GB system, where a blue laser, a 0.85 NA objective lens and a 0.1 mm thickness substrate are used. The simulation results are compared with experimental results for a 28 GB system.

For a two-dimensional constant-weight block code, we show that the recording density is proportional to code rate and the second power of the size of the bright point. Second, we show four constant-weight block codes (two 2:16 codes, a 4:24 code, and a 4:16 code) with different code rates. In simulation experiments, we measured the maximum size of bright points for each code, the bit error rate was practical (10(-4) or less), and simulation results show that the maximum size increases as the code rate decreases. Then, we show that the highest recording density is achieved with the two 2:16 codes and the 4:24 code and that these codes are suitable for orthogonal aperture-multiplexing. We also show that there is a trade-off between multiplexity and the code rate. [DOI: 10.1143/JJAP.47.8440]

Multilevel recording with run-length limited (RLL) modulation is a novel way to significantly increase the recording density without changing the optical or mechanical units of current optical, disc systems. In this paper, a new efficient 4-ary RLL(2, 13) code with special constraint is designed for four-level RLL modulation on read-only digital versatile disc (DVD-ROM). This code can result in alternate multilevel pits and lands on the disc, and reduce the difficulty of multilevel disc replication. Further more, simulation results show the symbol error rate (SER) performance can be improved about 3 dB when the proposed code is used for optical recording channel with partial-response maximum-likelihood (PRML) detection.
