Cross-Layer in MIMO-OFDM System with Adaptive modulation and coding: Design and Analysis

The queuing performance of the cross-layer system with Space-time block code (STBC) over Multi-input-multi-output (MIMO) channel is analyzed. The Adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) in physical layer and finite length of buffer in data-link layer are combined with this model. A simple cross-layer design and the queue state process are proposed based on finite state Markov channel model, which is to solve the service process. The proposed cross-layer design is also incorporated with STBC to further improve the system performance. Simulation results illustrate the dependence of system performance on various parameters, and quantify the performance gain due to cross-layer optimization. The adjustment of target packet loss rate of adaptive modulation coding in physical layer can maximize average throughput of the system, meanwhile a significant improvement of the system performance is brought.

The performance of a bandwidth-efficient multiple-tone modulation scheme for M-ary frequency-shift keying (MFSK) is presented. The use of balanced incomplete block (BIB) designs is proposed to form the signaling frames. On each symbol interval the modulator selects a group of elements from a BIB design and divides its energy into the orthogonal waveforms corresponding to these elements. The multiple-tone FSK scheme based on these block designs is shown to increase greatly the bandwidth efficiency of a conventional M-ary FSK system. An implicit diversity is incorporated in the modulation scheme. Thus, a performance improvement comparable to that obtained by using time or frequency diversity is shown on a Rayleigh fading channel and also on an interference channel with partial-band Gaussian noise. The multiple-tone scheme based on this design is compared to a multiple-tone scheme based on Hadamard matrices suggested by J.F. Pieper et al. (1978). It is shown that similar performance is achieved on a fading channel, while an advantage close to 4 dB is obtained for the proposed scheme on an AWGN (additive white Gaussian noise) channel.< >

Improving Bit-Error-Rate Performance Using modulation coding Techniques for Spin-Torque Transfer Magnetic Random Access Memory

In non-volatile random-access memory (RAM) technologies, the spin-torque transfer magnetic random-access memory (STT-MRAM) is a promising candidate. STT-MRAM has attracted attention owing to its advantages, such as a high density, high endurance, and high-speed writing/reading. Moreover, STT-MRAM is utilized to replace dynamic random-access memory (DRAM) in Internet of Things (IoT) and artificial intelligence (AI) applications. However, because the magnetic tunnel junction is used to write data, STT-MRAM must face process variation and thermal fluctuation problems. This causes errors in writing and reading processes. These errors are independent of each other. Therefore, to solve them and increase the reliability of STT-MRAM, the data are encoded before storage in STT-MRAM devices. In this study, we propose a method for designing codewords using modulation coding techniques. Our codewords increase the minimum Hamming distance and inheritance of the sparse code characteristic to exploit the asymmetric probability of the write errors. The simulation results show that our codewords can improve the bit error rate performance of STT-MRAM compared with previous works.

The principal target of this study is to enhance the performance of the 4-level holographic data storage (HDS) systems by using a well-suited modulation code scheme. The HDS system is one of the most promising approaches for storing massive digital data for the next-generation optical data storage systems. However, the performance of retrieving data in the HDS system is severely affected by fatal interference (FI) patterns. The proposed coding design aims to get rid of all FI patterns during the recording procedure with reasonable computational complexity.

In the paper, we investigate a distortion-optimized resource allocation problem among a group of users with unicast video transmission in OFDMA networks. Since video distortion results from both encoding errors due to rate limitation and transmission errors due to packet losses, to minimize distortion we also consider joint optimization of the selection of the modulation and coding scheme (MCS) for each allocated resource unit. To proceed, we formulate a mixed-integer non-linear programming (MINLP) problem for joint resource allocation and MCS selection with the objective to minimize overall video distortions from all users. To solve the formulated problem, we propose a two-stage algorithm, where the Hungarian algorithm is used in the first stage to optimally assign the minimum resource units required for individual users based on their channel conditions. In the second stage, additional resource units are assigned to the most needed users with the greatest potential to minimize the overall distortions. As more resource units are allocated to each user, the MCS is adjusted accordingly to avoid biased selection from the initial resource unit. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm achieves performance gain of about 16%-55% compared to the conventional approach of separate resource allocation and MCS selection.

This paper proposes an adaptive mode and modulation coding switching (AMMCS) scheme for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) multicasting system. More specifically, in addition to the adaptively chosen modulation and error coding, two types of MIMO modes are adaptively switched, i.e., between spatial multiplexing (SM) mode, which can achieve higher data rate, and spatial diversity (SD) mode, which can provide higher received signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Analytical equations for scheduling rate and average spectral efficiency are derived for both SD and SM modes in a 2x2 MIMO system. Simulation results well justify our analytical equations and also demonstrate that our proposed scheme can achieve higher scheduling rate when SNR is low and higher spectral efficiency when SNR is high.

We discuss modulation coding for a digital holographic memory that uses highly sensitive strontium barium niobate, We observed degradation of the reconstructed images near the beginning of multiplexing, Concluding that the degradation was caused by medium saturation, we reduced it by using a 2 : 4 modulation code, which reduces the average intensity of the coded pattern and the clustering of bright bits. As a result, we improved the signal-to-noise ratios of the reconstructed images and hence the bit error rates of the system. We obtained bit error rates of less than 10-1, which can be elin-dnated by conventional error correction, in 50-times-multiplexing.

The aggressive scaling down of flash memories has threatened data reliability since the scaling down of cell sizes gives rise to more serious degradation mechanisms such as cell-to-cell interference and lateral charge spreading. The effect of these mechanisms has pattern dependency and some data patterns are more vulnerable than other ones. In this paper, we will categorize data patterns taking into account degradation mechanisms and pattern dependency. In addition, we propose several modulation coding schemes to improve the data reliability by transforming original vulnerable data patterns into more robust ones.

Joint relay selection and adaption of modulation, coding and transmit power for spectral efficiency optimisation in amplify-forward relay network

Three schemes are designed for joint relay selection and link adaption in amplify and forward relay network which are called RS-CAP (joint relay selection with continuous adaptation of powers), RS-DAP (joint relay selection with discrete adaptation of powers) and OTD-DAP (optimised time division with discrete adaptation of powers). In all schemes spectral efficiency is optimised using adaptive modulation, coding and transmit power subject to average power constraint of each node and a bit error rate constraint of detection. The main idea behind all designs is to save power of relays in inactive time to be utilised for active time. In RS-CAP and RS-DAP, optimised relay selection is done based on channel state information of all corresponding paths, however, in OTD-DAP just an optimised time percentage is allocated to each relay to cooperate in signal transmission. Considerable less channel estimation load is imposed on the receiver in the OTD-DAP scheme compared with the others. In RS-CAP power of nodes are continuously adapted, however, in RS-DAP and OTD-DAP, powers are discrete adaptive. Thus there is a considerable decrease in feedback rate in the RS-DAP and OTD-DAP schemes in comparison with RS-CAP. A trade-off between the performance and channel estimation load and feedback rate is seen in numerical evaluations. Noticeable improvement in achievable rates is seen by using proposed schemes compared with the previous works.
