The flexibility of WiMAX framework offers new dimensions for cross-layer optimization and can be exploited to optimize the application performance. This article focuses on identifiers that have direct impact on quality of service (QoS)and effect of such identifiers is evaluated through computer simulation using OPNET Modeler 14.5 Wireless Suite. In this paper we have used advanced WiMAX features such as adaptive modulation and coding (AMC), automatic repeat request (ARQ) and hybrid-ARQ to tune the WiMAX network MAC layer such that its adaptation improves both capacity and delay (thus optimize the performance). ARQ is treated as higher layer to HARQ. HARQ gives up after maximum retransmissions. HARQ performs fast retransmissions and ARQ takes over in cases HARQ fails after multiple retransmissions. This gives an added layer of protection to data. HARQ is proved to be most suitable (when used with aggressive modulation and coding) for WiMAX due to its hybrid nature as it takes into account both the MAC and link layer. Using ARQ in conjunction with HARQ gives slight improvement in BLER (Block Error Rate) but at the expense of high UL frame utilization.

The high-speed data services, up to about 14.4 Mbps, for the 3G networks is supported by the high-speed downlink packet access (HSDPA) concept. Adaptive modulation and coding (AMC), multicode operation and hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) are the enabling technologies used for HSDPA. The next generation mobile communications systems is anticipated to support even higher data rates up to and exceeding 100 Mbps. MC-CDMA and DS-CDMA, both using frequency-domain equalization, are considered the most promising wireless access schemes. In this paper, we compare the throughput performance of MCand DS-CDMA when packet data are transmitted as in HSDPA with AMC and HARQ using multiple codes.

We develop an integrated subchannel scheduling algorithm to maximize the system throughput while guaranteeing minimum data rate requirements for multimedia users in multiuser MIMO-OFDM systems downlink transmission utilizing adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) with limited channel state information feedback. By using the integrated subchannel scheduling, we apply the mathematical equivalence between antennas and subcarriers in the analysis, getting multiple parallel transmit subchannels, and then evaluating the channel state from the viewpoint of receivers. Joint space-frequency diversity as well as multiuser diversity is exploited simultaneously by the subchannel allocation algorithm. A modified proportional fair scheduling is proposed and a fast algorithm for more practical implementation is also proposed. By numerical examples, the system throughput and fairness superiority of our scheduling scheme are verified.

Adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) consists in adjusting the transmission parameters according to the channel state which affects the performance of the receiver. Practical implementation of the AMC is commonly done in scalar channels, where the signal to noise ratio characterizes sufficiently well the quality of the transmission. In this paper, we propose to use the AMC in matrix (MIMO) channels with the receiver employing the iterative (turbo) processing. Such solutions were not yet proposed in the literature due to the lack of appropriate performance evaluation tools. In the paper we employ the recently proposed method based on the so-called EXIT analysis, which was shown to predict accurately the performance of the turbo receivers. The numerical results obtained in the space-time bit-interleaved coded modulation MIMO transmission indicate that the throughput obtained exceeds considerably a non-adaptive transmission, and approaches the optimal water-filling solution

The system model and the algorithm for a cross-layer design combining the adaptive modulation and coding with ARQ based on frequency domain subcarrier of OFDM is developed at first. And then the effect of high speed move to the performance of that is analyzed. In order to compensate the degraded performance of wireless link due to high-speed move, a novel finite-state Markov channel model is formed to represent the frequency domain subcarrier of OFDM modeled as random process with Nakagami-m fading distribution. A correction of the threshold of modulation and coding scheme and the channel quality information as well as the method for link prediction in Chase combining is investigated. On this foundation, an improved cross-layer design combining of adaptive modulation and coding with H-ARQ is proposed. The computer simulation results reveal that the improved design and modified algorithm has higher average throughput and lower FER than the original one when the terminal moves in high speed.

Adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) is one of the main advantage of the WiMAX system in broadband wireless access (BWA) applications. The system changes modulation and coding to provide high quality of service. This feature is especially attractive for services like on demand video and image transmission. The physical layer of system monitors the channel condition and estimating signal to noise ratio (SNR) of received signals to change adaptively. In this paper, we evaluate the system performance for image transmission. We use peak signal to noise ratio (PSNR) factor in AMC and compare it with a classical system that uses signal to noise ratio for a pilot random signal.

This paper develops cross-layer adaptive modulation and coding as an efficient method for bit interleaved coded OFDM packet transmission. As objective function, we adopt the goodput, or the number of data bits delivered without error per unit of time. After the formalization of the optimization problem through an accurate modeling on the link performance, an iterative solution is derived based on the framework of greedy algorithms. Simulation results show that the proposed method improves upon the performance of static transmission and uniform bit allocation by 2-4 dB.

A modulation and coding scheme selection method, proposed by Kim and et al. (3GPP2 TSG-C, C50-20011203-014, 2001), is used for an adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) scheme in cdma2000 1xEV-DV. The proposed method, so-called modulation order product code rate (MPR), provides a good criteria for selection of modulation and code rate among various AMC levels, with more than 127 levels for accurate channel adaptation and maximal system throughput. We introduce the properties of MPR and applications in cdma2000 1xEV DV.

Adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) is a powerful technique to improve throughput especially of wireless packet-oriented channels. In general such link adaptation schemes rely on feedback from the receiver, which allows selecting the appropriate modulation and coding. In this paper we evaluate the performance of different channel quality feedback schemes and propose a general performance metric, that considers data throughput, energy efficiency, channel resource consumption, as well as control overhead. At the example of the high speed downlink packet access (HSDPA) channel for UMTS FDD, we show that channel quality feedback schemes that consider the burstiness of packet data are able to provide notably higher efficiency than the cyclic feedback currently standardized.

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has recently established the Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System (TDRSS) K-band Upgrade Project (TKUP), a project intended to enhance the TDRSS Ku-band and Ka-band Single Access Return 225 MHz (Ku/KaSAR-225) data service by adding the capability to process bandwidth efficient signal design and to replace the White Sand Complex (WSC) KSAR high data rate ground equipment and high rate switches which are nearing obsolescence. As a precursor to this project, a modulation and coding study was performed to identify signal structures which maximized the data rate through the Ku/KaSAR-225 channel, minimized the required customer EIRP and ensured acceptable hardware complexity on the customer platform.
