In this paper, we propose and analyze an adaptive modulation system with optimal turbo coded V-BLAST (vertical-bell-lab layered space-time) technique that adopts the extrinsic information from MAP (maximum a posteriori) decoder with iterative decoding as a priori probability in two decoding procedures of V-BLAST scheme; the ordering and the slicing. The result indicates that the proposed systems achieve a better throughput performance than the conventional systems in the whole SNR range. In addition, the simulation result shows that the maximum throughput improvement in each MIMO scheme is respectively about 421 kbps, 545 kbps, and 880 kbps. It is suggested that the effect of the proposed decoding algorithm accordingly gets higher as the number of system antenna increases.

In this paper, the impact of channel state estimation errors in a system employing AMC and multicodes is studied. The channel is modelled as a finite-state Markov chain (FSMC), and a hidden Markov model (HMM) formulation for the above problem is presented. An HMM filter is used and shown to yield an improved estimate of the channel state. Since the transition probabilities of the FSMC are required by the HMM filter, the problem of estimating these probabilities is also addressed. The performance of the proposed scheme is evaluated using computer simulation. The results show that the HMM filter provides a significant throughput improvement over the unfiltered case, especially when the channel state information (CSI) is quite noisy or the normalized Doppler rate (defined as the product of the Doppler rate of the channel and the transmission period) is small

We address the application of adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) for third-generation (3G) wireless systems. We propose a new method for selecting the appropriate modulation and coding scheme (MCS) according to the estimated channel condition. We take a statistical decision making approach to maximize the average throughput while maintaining an acceptable frame error rate (FER). We use a first-order finite-state Markov model to represent the average channel signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) in subsequent frames. The MCS is selected in each state of this Markov model (among the choices proposed in the 3G standards) to maximize the statistical average of the throughput in that state. Using this decision-making approach, we also propose a simplified Markov model with fewer parameters, which is suitable in systems where changes in the fading characteristics need to be accounted for in an adaptive fashion. Numerical results are presented showing that both of our models substantially outperform the conventional techniques that use "threshold-based" decision making.

The objective of this paper is to show the effect on speech quality by examining the tradeoff between the coding gain, provided by channel coding, and modulation adjustments, such as rate- and type-changes. Two basic types of systems are utilized to examine the performance tradeoffs. The first system performs a tradeoff between the voice codec and channel codec bit rates, but with a fixed symbol rate modulation (FRM). The second system is represented by a similar adaptive-rate voice codec as in the first system, but with fixed-rate channel coding and adaptive-rate modulation (ARM). Within both the FRM and ARM systems, we also examine the effect of changing modulation type. For this study, power-efficient and bandwidth-efficient modulation signaling sets are considered. For the power-efficient modulation, we utilized M-ary pulse position modulation (PPM) types. M-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) types were utilized for the bandwidth efficient modulations. In addition, orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) was utilized as the method to format and multiplex the digital data at baseband. Simulation results show, for higher order modulations, that the ARM and FRM approaches, respectively, work best for power-efficient and bandwidth-efficient modulations.

By viewing the coherent wireless sensor network (WSN) setup as a distributed space-time multi-input single-output (MISO) system, we minimize average transmit-power when sensors communicate with a fusion center (FC) using adaptive modulation and coding over a wireless fading channel. To this end, we derive optimal distributed beamforming and resource allocation strategies when the full (F-) channel state information at the transmitters (CSIT) is available, or, each sensor has F-CSIT of its own link with the FC but only quantized CSIT of other sensors through finite-rate feedback. Numerical results are presented to evaluate the power savings of the novel strategies.

It is well known that link adaptation techniques, when designed to track the channel variations, yield a higher network throughput. In this work, we investigate the throughput returns due to the employment of various combinations of adaptive modulation, adaptive coding, and adaptive power control in a fixed cellular broadband wireless access system incorporating the effects of shadowing, multipath fading, and multiple access interference. The system considered is a multipoint multichannel distribution system (MMDS) with carrier frequency 2.5 GHz. It is observed that among all the possible combinations, the combination of adaptive modulation and adaptive coding (without power control) is the most efficient type since the further employment of adaptive power control only adds a relatively small improvement in the throughput. The frequency of occurrence of different constellation sizes and code rates with the percentages of the successful and failing links, are reported as well in this study.

An important aspect of wireless networks is the dynamic behavior, cross-layer design is the central technique to cope with and utilize this behavior. In this paper, we present the cross-layer design for adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) with HARQ. For each of two widely used HARQ techniques-chase combining and incremental redundancy, the close-form functions of average retransmission time, average delay and average throughput are derived for a specific modulation and coding scheme (MCS). Based on the derived functions, a novel MCS selection method is proposed. Meanwhile, we give the analysis of how many retransmission is needed.

We study a wireless access system with adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) at the physical layer, finite-length queuing at the data link layer and a TCP protocol at the transport layer. We analyze the end-to-end TCP performance via a fixed-point procedure that effectively couples TCP with the AMC-based wireless link. Guided by the performance analysis, we present a simple cross-layer design, which optimizes the target packet error rate in AMC at the physical layer, so that the TCP throughput at the transport layer is maximized.

The combined MIMO with adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) technology can provide high spectral efficiency and link robustness. While most existing adaptive algorithms focus on physical layer, cross-layer analysis on the queuing behavior of MIMO-AMC systems is necessary, but remains open. In this paper, under the conditions of unsaturated traffic and finite-length buffer, we investigate the queuing characters of two representative categories of MIMO systems, namely the BLAST system and the space-time block coding (STBC) system. We model the service processes of both STBC and BLAST coupled with AMC, which is the most challenging part of the queuing analysis. We observe a new tradeoff between diversity and multiplexing in terms of link layer packet loss rate and queuing delay, based on which we propose a cross-layer design of diversity-multiplexing switching scheme to optimize the QoS of the MIMO-AMC systems.

There have been great efforts to study the adaptive MIMO systems, while all of them concentrate on the systems without channel coding. This paper presents a new adaptive V-BLAST scheme adopting turbo-codes as the channel coding. This new scheme divides the optimization problem into two steps which simplifies the design greatly. Also, through this two-step method, we derive two algorithms for fixed rate and variable rate applications respectively. We combine the bit and power allocation with antenna selection effectively with very low complexity through a new ordering scheme and derive a simplified power allocation algorithm. For adaptive coding, we propose a new metric - Equivalent Capacity SNR, which can indicate the overall channel condition, to select the proper coding scheme. Simulation results show that the algorithms for fixed rate and variable rate both provide very good throughput performance with low complexity and less feedback information.
