Adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) and automatic repeat request (ARQ) protocol are powerful techniques for improving the spectral efficiency (SE) or the error performance in wireless packet networks over fading channels. In this paper, we first consider a discrete-rate M-QAM based AMC scheme and propose a variable power transmission scheme for transmission of packets over block-fading wireless channels. Considering the error-correcting capability of the truncated-ARQ, which depends on the maximum number of retransmissions (N r ), we then optimize the AMC and power control schemes that guarantee the required packet loss rate (PLR) performance while satisfying an average transmit power constraint. Numerical results reveal that in wireless packet systems with limited packet length, the proposed link adaptation algorithm improves the system performance in terms of the SE and the PLR However, this improvement depends on the target PLR and N r When the target PLR is sufficiently small, this improvement will be observed in terms of the SE for small N p however, in the larger target PLR, the improvement will only be observed in terms of the achievable PLR.

In this paper we describe a multi-layered video transport scheme for wireless channels capable of adapting to channel conditions in order to maximize end-to-end quality of service (QoS). This scheme combines a scalable H.263+ video source coder with unequal error protection (UEP) across layers. The UEP is achieved by employing different channel codes together with a multiresolution modulation approach to transport the different priority layers. Adaptivity to channel conditions is provided through use of joint source-channel coding (JSCC) which attempts to jointly optimize the source and channel coding rates together with the modulation parameters to obtain the maximum achievable end-to-end QoS for the prevailing channel conditions. Results indicate that this adaptive JSCC scheme employing scalable video encoding together with a multiresolution modulation/coding approach leads to significant improvements in delivered video quality for specified channel conditions. In particular, the approach results in considerably improved graceful degradation properties for decreasing channel SNR.

WiMAX technology is considered one of the most important solutions capable to provide a Broadband Wireless Access in metropolitan areas. Mobility issues have become challenging for the rollout for WiMAX networks in order to compete against the other competitive technologies such as 3.5G and LTE. In this paper, a unified approach to derive the overall BER and data rate for mobile WiMAX (in uplink direction) will be introduced. This approach will take into consideration different operational scenarios such as time varying channels with different values of channel estimation precision values, different number of subcarriers, and different symbol durations. An analytical expression for the effect of ICI power on the bit error probability and effective bit rate will be obtained for BPSK, QPSK, and 16QAM in presence of AMC. This paper also investigates the effect of the use of AMC techniques on the obtained system performance.

Layered video multicasting can be used to accommodate the heterogeneity of users and their receive channels in wired and wireless system. In a wireless system using adaptive modulation and coding (AMC), total utility of all users can be increased by transmitting the video layers over different AMC modes and allocating proper bandwidth to these video layers. In this paper, it is shown that when the utility function is convex, the utility maximization problem can be formulated into a convex optimization problem. Then several important practical issues like limitation of layer numbers and operational layer rates are considered. With these limitations and no convex constraint on utility function, a genetic algorithm (GA) is proposed to maximize the total utility by layer rate allocation and selecting AMC modes to transmit the video layers. A 7-cell cdma2000 HDR system is used in the simulation to show the performance of the proposed methods.

This paper presents an efficient unequal error protection (UEP) approach for data partitioned video over wireless channels. We consider two methods: 1) forward error correction (FEC) with variable code-rates, and 2) hierarchical quadrature amplitude modulation (HQAM) combined with FEC with a fixed code-rate. In a low-delay application, the variable bit rate ratio between the high-priority and low-priority layers imposes certain constraints on these two methods. These constraints are discussed and solutions are proposed. Simulation results with an H.264 video codec show that combined HQAM and FEC outperforms FEC alone in both Gaussian and fading channels while having advantage over the nonlayered transmission

Adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) has been adopted in the 3GPP standard in order to improve spectral efficiency. In order to increase the granularity of the adaptation and to provide higher bit rates, multicode transmission is employed. Since the use of AMC requires knowledge of the channel state, the accuracy of this information is important. In practice, errors in estimating the channel state are inevitable, resulting in performance degradation. The average bit rate performance of AMC with multicodes is studied for a CDMA system experiencing Nakagami fading and channel estimation errors. The results are obtained in terms of the generalized Marcum Q-function. Numerical results are provided to illustrate the performance degradations due to inaccuracies in estimating the channel.

This paper deals with packet error rate (PER) prediction and its impact on adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) for an OFDM turbo coded transmission on a multipath channel. We compare four link quality metrics (LQM), including the signal to noise ratio (SNR), the capacity, and two LQM which we designed to exploit the soft outputs of the turbo-decoder. Since error prediction is used to perform AMC, we assess the throughput performance of a realistic system employing each of the four LQM. The comparison shows that while SNR performs poorly and capacity remains suboptimum, the two metrics exploiting soft outputs approach the throughput which would be achieved by perfect PER prediction

In the present and future generation of wireless networks, link adaptation is used for better channel efficiency. With link adaptation the modulation and coding scheme used for transmissions to a particular user is adjusted based on the user's channel conditions. However, because of delays and measurement errors in the reported channel quality information, the actual transmission may experience a significantly different channel than anticipated. This can either lead to transmission errors (if the channel has deteriorated) or wasted transmission resources (if the channel is actually better than predicted). To avoid the former scenario, a conservative mapping from channel quality information to modulation and coding scheme is used. However, the degree of this conservatism depends on the Doppler Frequency of the channel with higher values requiring a more conservative mapping. In this paper we propose an algorithm for dynamically adjusting the mapping from channel quality reports to the modulation and coding scheme. Hybrid ARQ is assumed and we use the outcome of the first transmission to adjust the mapping. Simulation results are used to illustrate the effectiveness of the approach.

Optimizing the performance of adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) in practice has proven challenging. Prior research has struggled to find link quality metrics that are suitable for look-up-tables and simultaneously provide an injective mapping to error rate in wireless links that feature selective channels with hardware nonlinearities and non-Gaussian noise effects. This paper proposes a novel online support vector machine algorithm, compatible with accurate multidimensional link quality metrics, that is able to optimize AMC to the unique (potentially dynamic) hardware characteristics of each wireless device in selective channels. IEEE 802.11n simulations show that our proposed algorithm allows each individual wireless device to optimize the operating point in the rate/reliability tradeoff through frame-by-frame error evaluation. These simulations also show that our algorithm displays identical performance to alternative online AMC algorithms while drastically reducing complexity.
