Optimizing the performance of adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) in practice has proven challenging. Prior research has struggled to find link quality metrics that are suitable for look-up-tables and simultaneously provide an injective mapping to error rate in wireless links that feature selective channels with hardware nonlinearities and non-Gaussian noise effects. This paper proposes a novel online support vector machine algorithm, compatible with accurate multidimensional link quality metrics, that is able to optimize AMC to the unique (potentially dynamic) hardware characteristics of each wireless device in selective channels. IEEE 802.11n simulations show that our proposed algorithm allows each individual wireless device to optimize the operating point in the rate/reliability tradeoff through frame-by-frame error evaluation. These simulations also show that our algorithm displays identical performance to alternative online AMC algorithms while drastically reducing complexity.

This paper reviews concepts and techniques related to the effect of modulation accuracy on HSDPA radio link performance. The Error Vector Magnitude (EVM) results are simulated and discussed by using the test models without HSDPA (test model 1) and with HSDPA (test model 5) defined in 3 rd generation partnership project (3gpp) [1] for RF part by introducing some non-linearity in the test signal passing through RF transmitter (RFTX) chain. In this work from the figures 5 (PSat = 10.1 dBm), 6 (PSat = 13.2 dBm) and the discussions based on 3gpp specs (EVM = 17.5 % without HSDPA and 12.5 % with HSDPA) it can be concluded that the RF TX path got to be (PSat =3.1 dBm) more linear to support the HSDPA.

A novel frequency hopped spread spectrum packet radio communication system suitable for time division multiplexed, high speed indoor office wireless networks is proposed. The hopping is carried out at a logical level on the bit stream rather than physical hopping of the carriers. This on one hand eliminates phase problems associated with differential modulation along hopped carriers in frequency-selective fading channels, and on the other circumvents the need for agile frequency synthesizers. A coding strategy has been developed to provide the best error-rate performance under given channel conditions. System design issues are discussed and an example design is presented.< >

This paper proposes a joint adaptive rate selection and power control algorithm for broadband TDMA/TDM wireless networks. The proposed algorithm is a modified, enhanced, and more robust version of the selective power control with active link protection (SPC-ALP) algorithm proposed for adaptive transmission rate and power control in CDMA networks [*** and S. Kim, 2000]. Unlike SPC-ALP, the proposed algorithm uses adaptive coding and modulation (instead of variable spreading gain) for transmission rate control. In addition, the proposed algorithm is different in two aspects; the first one is the inclusion of the cochannel interferer assistance mode, while the second one is the use of the signal quality as a criterion for user removal. Results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms SPC-ALP in terms of the net throughput and signal quality measures such as the outage probability and frame error rate. Channel reallocation is also studied and found to be very effective in enhancing the system performance particularly at low to medium loading.

Several adaptive transmission schemes have been proposed to improve the performance of wireless networks. In this paper we have analysed three criteria to compute the switching points in a wireless ATM system with adaptive modulation, Then, we have proposed two hybrid approaches using adaptive modulation and channel coding to improve the performance of the wireless link.

The adaptive modulation and coding can provide robust and spectrally efficient transmission over generalized ¿-¿ (or generalized gamma) wireless fading channels. The key idea of our proposal is to transmit the low-density parity-check (LDPC) encoded sequence over the generalized fading channel, feedback the channel state information of by an RF feedback channel, and adapt the powers and rates of so that the channel capacity is maximized. The optimal power adaptation policy maximizing the channel capacity is derived. We show that deep fades can be tolerated with proposed scheme.

A major evolution of the UMTS standard is the so-called high speed downlink packet access (HSDPA) mode, which provides peak data rates of 10.8 Mbps. Key enabling technologies include fast scheduling, adaptive modulation and coding (AMC), as well as hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ). The paper gives a general overview of the current HSDPA standard. Special focus is put on the implementation and performance of the AMC and HARQ functions, as well as on their interworking. The performance of different HARQ schemes are compared for QPSK and 16-QAM and varying code rates. Subsequently, link-level throughput is simulated. It is shown that the throughput gains offered by advanced HARQ schemes depend on the performance of the AMC function. In particular, the gain offered by incremental redundancy techniques increases with increasing errors in selecting the appropriate modulation and code rate.

Adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) is a powerful technique for improving the spectral efficiency or the error performance in wireless packet networks over fading channels. In this article, using a fixed number of modulation and coding modes we propose a variable power transmission scheme for transmission of packets over block-fading wireless channels. We obtain the general form of optimal power adaptation and optimum AMC mode switching levels that maximize spectral efficiency under prescribed packet error rate (PER) constraint while satisfying an average transmit power constraint. Numerical results reveal that in wireless packet systems with limited packet length, the proposed scheme provides substantial average spectral efficiency gain when compared to the non-adaptive case. The optimization framework presented in this article would be useful for cross-layer optimization of physical layer in packet networks.

In this paper, we evaluate the voice traffic performance of an OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) wireless access system. We propose an algorithm for serving handover calls with higher priority than new calls, considering different AMC (adaptive modulation and coding) modes. The purpose is to efficiently utilize the scarce radio resources in order to improve the system performance.

This paper deals with throughput oriented adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) techniques combined with cooperative protocols where terminals are constrained by half-duplex assumption and average total network power. We propose a novel hybrid cooperation protocol that switches from cooperative to non-cooperative transmission based on the momentary direct source-destination link quality. Then, we propose an hybrid cooperative AMC mechanism, which combines AMC with hybrid cooperation. Simulation results show that our proposal improves the average system performance and reduces the average cooperation signaling cost.
