This paper explores the improvement in information capacity and data rate for practical systems that is possible with adaptive antenna technology applied to wireless multipath communication channels. Whereas the conventional view is that multipath signal propagation is an impediment to reliable communication, this paper shows that multipath can actually multiply the achievable data rate for wireless channels provided that the appropriate communication structure is employed. Multivariate discrete multitone (MDMT) combined with multivariate trellis coded modulation (MTCM) is proposed and analyzed as a practical means of realizing a multiplicative rate advantage when channel state information is not available at the transmitter.

Assuming there are always sufficient data waiting to be transmitted, adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) at the physical layer have been traditionally designed separately from higher layers. However, this assumption is not always valid when queuing effects are taken into account at the data link layer. In this paper, we analyze the performance of a wireless system with finite-length queuing and AMC. We characterize the queuing service process induced by AMC, and derive the recursion of the queue state. We then construct a finite state Markov chain (FSMC) with a state pair containing both the queue and the queue server state, and compute its stationary distribution. The latter enables us to derive closed-form expressions for the packet loss rate and the average throughput. Guided by our performance analysis, we also introduce a cross-layer design, which optimizes the target packet error rate in AMC at the physical layer, to minimize the packet loss rate and maximize the average throughput, when combined with a finite-length queue at the data link layer.

In this paper, powerful coding techniques for differential space-time modulation (DSTM) over Rayleigh flat fading channels and noncoherent demodulation without channel state information at the receiver are investigated. In particular, multilevel coding (MLC), bit-interleaved coded modulation (BICM), and so-called hybrid coded modulation (HCM) are devised and compared using capacity arguments. For improved noncoherent reception multiple-symbol differential detection (MSDD) and a low-complexity version of MSDD are adapted to DSTM.

To enhance spectral efficiency and channel utilization in future wireless communication systems, adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) has been advocated at the physical layer. However, since the constellation size and coding rate are chosen based on the corresponding carrier-to-noise ratio (CNR) region, AMC can not guarantee to achieve the maximum spectral efficiency, especially when the number of available AMC modes are limited and the current CNR is low. In this paper, we present a scheme for spectral efficiency enhancement under fading channels. The proposed scheme combines AMC at the physical layer with hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) at the data link layer in a cross-layer fashion, where the upper layer HARQ provides an effective means to fine-tune the performance of the lower layer AMC. Both type-I and type-II HARQ are considered in our design. We have analyzed the system PER performance and the spectral efficiency of the proposed cross- layer design scheme. Numerical results show that our scheme can achieve maximum spectral efficiency while satisfying QoS requirements. The cross-layer design with AMC and type-II HARQ provides a large spectral efficiency improvement over the design with AMC and type-I HARQ.

A Markov based method for modulation and coding scheme (MCS) selection is proposed for pilot assistant adaptive modulation and coding scheme (AMC) with hybrid ARQ (HARQ) retransmissions. A first-order finite-state Markov model (FSMM) is introduced to represent the time correlation character of channel fading during (channel quality indicator) CQI feedback and HARQ retransmissions. According to different QoS targets, such as maximizing the air interface throughput or maintaining a target frame error rate (FER) for each user, the Markov based method can deduce different reference pilot thresholds for each MCS. Theoretical analysis and link level simulation results both show the efficiency of the Markov based method for pilot threshold calculation according to different QoS target and different HARQ retransmission times

We present an optimal Adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) policy that minimizes the transmission latency and modulation/coding switching cost across a finite-state Markovian fading channel. We formulate the optimal tradeoff between the transmission latency and the modulation/coding switching cost as a stochastic shortest path Markov decision problem (MDP). By exploiting special structures of the formulated MDP and under certain sufficient conditions, we show that optimal modulation and coding selection policies are monotone in the state variables. These monotone optimal policies are computationally inexpensive to implement and are scalable in terms of channel and switching cost parameters. Numerical results confirm the monotonicity and threshold-based structure of the optimal MCS selection policies under the proposed sufficient conditions.

Packet retransmission strategies are presented for MIMO eigenmode transmission where adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) is implemented. The retransmission design is based on weighted linear MMSE. It includes the transmit and receiver filter, the power and eigenmode allocation and AMC level when new packets are transmitted. The weight matrix of WMMSE is used to appropriately weight streams with different AMC levels in order to maximize the system throughput. Simulations show that the choice of the weight factors has a major impact on the performance.

We discuss some recent results on adaptive modulation and coding for fading channels. The connection between these results and the corresponding Shannon capacity limits and optimal transmission strategies are also explored. We first describe our work on adaptive trellis and turbo-coded MQAM, for flat-fading channels, including the impact of channel estimation error and feedback delay. Next we consider frequency-selective fading channels. We show that multicarrier modulation with adaptive loading is optimal for finite block lengths. However, as the blocklength grows to infinity Shannon theory indicates that a forward/backward coding strategy is required. We discuss various methods to implement such an adaptive strategy and how the performance of these methods might differ from that of adaptive multicarrier modulation. Next we examine adaptive modulation techniques for simultaneous voice and data transmission. Specifically, we propose a simple transmission strategy that simultaneously meets the delay and BER requirements of voice while maximizing the data throughput. The connection between these results and previous results on outage (delay-limited) capacity are outlined, along with extensions of this technique to more general multimedia systems with different data rate, BER, and delay requirements. Finally, we discuss adaptive CDMA strategies for voice and data users in multiaccess fading channels.

As the demand of high quality service in next generation wireless communication systems, a high performance of data transmission requires an increase of spectrum efficiency and an improvement of error performance in wireless communication systems. In this paper, we propose a multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system with adaptive modulation and coding to improve system capacity with maintaining good error performance. The results of computer simulation show the improvement of system capacity in Rayleigh fading channel.

It is well known that for delay-tolerant data services, adaptive transmission with the modulation and coding scheme (MCS) adjusted according to the instantaneous channel condition can maximize the throughput. In time-varying channels, the performance degradation of adaptive transmission caused by delayed or inaccurate channel condition feedback can be mitigated with the use of hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ). With these two techniques jointly implemented, the selection of MCS becomes a complex process highly dependent on channel and system characteristics, and is usually difficult to be optimized analytically. In this paper, we investigate the conditions for throughput-maximizing MCS selection, then propose an algorithm capable of adaptively fulfilling these conditions during transmission
