In this paper we define and address a new problem that arises when a base station in a broadband wireless network wishes to multicast information to a large group of nodes and to guarantee some level of reliability using Application layer FEC codes. Every data block to be multicast is translated into a sequence of K + n packets, from which every receiver must receive at least K in order to correctly decode the block. The new problem is to determine which PHY layer MCS (modulation and coding Scheme) the base station should use for each packet. We present several variants of this problem, which differ in the number of ARQ (Automatic Repeat reQuest) rounds during which the delivery of a data block must be completed. Most of these variants are shown to be NP-hard. However, we present optimal solutions for practical instances, where the number of MCSs is small, and efficient approximations and heuristics for the general case of each variant.

In this paper, we consider optimum rate quantization of Adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) systems by jointly designing the MCS levels and intervals. Optimum quantization leads to coupled non-algebraic equations, and is generally not amenable for analysis. Here, we propose two approximate AMC rate quantization methods, which are based on an observation of the optimal condition and the numerical results in the literature. The numerical results show that both proposed methods are near-optimum in expected throughput.

Broadcasting live digital TV to a small battery-powered handheld device is very challenging. One of the evolving technologies to provide such services is DVB-H (Digital Video Broadcasting over Handheld). Wireless channels constitute a fast varying environment that is hostile to reliable communications. Adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) is one of the most promising mechanisms to cope with the dynamic fading of wireless channels. However, the broadcast nature of DVB-H systems restricts the use of AMC as the transmitter must adapt to the user experiencing the worst channel. This would constitute a penalty to other users experiencing good channels. In this paper, a novel framework for AMC is proposed for broadcast DVB-H systems. The transmitted frames are arranged such that higher modulation symbols are transmitted followed by lower modulation symbols. Each group of symbols having the same modulation technique are arranged such that higher code rates (i.e. weaker codes) are transmitted first and then incremental symbols (constituting stronger codes) are transmitted afterwards. The proposed framework is then deployed as a power saving mechanism since power consumption has always been a crucial challenge for handheld devices. The proposed adaptive receiver adjusts its modulation and coding configuration to receive and detect the minimal amount of bits that guarantee a target Bit Error Rate (BER) performance. This is shown to result in significant potential for saving of reception and processing powers (up to 71.875%). Numerical analysis for the power saving potential and BER performance of the proposed scheme is performed for flat Rayleigh fading channel. Simulation results for the operation of DVB-H under the proposed scheme in a Typical Urban 6-paths (TU6) channel are presented. Finally, the effect of adaptation rate (i.e. how often the modulation and coding are allowed to change) on power saving potential is investigated.

In this paper, we investigate the performance of MC-CDMA with bi-orthogonal keying employing Generalized Symbol-rate-increased (GSRI) Pragmatic Adaptive Trellis Coded modulation (ATCM). It is advantageous that the GSRI TC-MPSK can arbitrarily set the bandwidth expansion ratio (coding rate) and higher coding gain than the conventional pragmatic TCM scheme can be obtained. By changing the modulation scheme and the bandwidth expansion ratio, this scheme can optimize the performance according to the channel conditions. The performance evaluations by simulations on an AWGN channel and multi-path fading channels are presented. It is shown that the proposed scheme has remarkable throughput performance than that of the conventional scheme.

We propose a precoding strategy which controls amplitude and phase of receiving signals to improve throughput for two-stage bidirectional relaying. We consider the case when the nodes know channel state information (CSI) and can adopt adaptive modulation techniques. We introduce a novel scheme termed adaptive modulation and network coding (AMNC), which jointly optimizes modulations and network coding based on the CSI. For dynamic bit loading and power allocation, we propose a practical time-sharing method called the segmented precoding, in which a packet is split into several sub-packets, and a set of modulation and network coding is optimized in conjunction with amplitude and phase controls for each sub-packet. It is demonstrated that our proposed scheme can offer a significant improvement of achievable throughput for two-way relaying.

We consider the problem of performing adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) in dual-hop transmission systems with regenerative relaying. In particular, we consider a scenario where the AMC on both hops is done independently of each other, thus requiring a potential buffering of data packets at the relay station before they can be forwarded to the actual destination. In this regard, we propose that both the current channel conditions as well as the current buffer filling level are taken into account in the AMC mode selection, so that buffer overflows at the relay station can be completely avoided. We thoroughly analyze our scheme by means of a finite-state Markov model, based on which we derive various different performance measures, such as the average transmission efficiency or the average transmission delay.

The flexibility of WiMAX framework offers new dimensions for cross-layer optimization and can be exploited to optimize the application performance. This article focuses on identifiers that have direct impact on quality of service (QoS)and effect of such identifiers is evaluated through computer simulation using OPNET Modeler 14.5 Wireless Suite. In this paper we have used advanced WiMAX features such as adaptive modulation and coding (AMC), automatic repeat request (ARQ) and hybrid-ARQ to tune the WiMAX network MAC layer such that its adaptation improves both capacity and delay (thus optimize the performance). ARQ is treated as higher layer to HARQ. HARQ gives up after maximum retransmissions. HARQ performs fast retransmissions and ARQ takes over in cases HARQ fails after multiple retransmissions. This gives an added layer of protection to data. HARQ is proved to be most suitable (when used with aggressive modulation and coding) for WiMAX due to its hybrid nature as it takes into account both the MAC and link layer. Using ARQ in conjunction with HARQ gives slight improvement in BLER (Block Error Rate) but at the expense of high UL frame utilization.

Adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) is one of the main advantage of the WiMAX system in broadband wireless access (BWA) applications. The system changes modulation and coding to provide high quality of service. This feature is especially attractive for services like on demand video and image transmission. The physical layer of system monitors the channel condition and estimating signal to noise ratio (SNR) of received signals to change adaptively. In this paper, we evaluate the system performance for image transmission. We use peak signal to noise ratio (PSNR) factor in AMC and compare it with a classical system that uses signal to noise ratio for a pilot random signal.

In this paper, we investigate a communication strategy combining of transmit antenna selection with adaptive modulation and coding for space-time block coded system. The antenna selection is based on the criterion of maximizing the average spectral efficiency (ASE) of the whole system for a given bit error rate (BER) constraint. In order to enhance system performance, low density parity check codes (LDPC) is employed as the error correcting codes. We assume that the channel state information (CSI) is known at the receiver and the adaptive control signaling can be perfectly fed back to the transmitter. Simulation results show that our proposed scheme provides a well behaved trade-off between the ASE and BER under MIMO environment.
