Based on a "capacity rule", the performance of multilevel coding (MLC) schemes with different decoding methods, which are multistage decoding (MSD) and parallel decoding on level (PDL), is investigated. The work is done for 8ASK modulation and three mapping strategies over Rayleigh fading channels are used. In each scheme BCH codes with different code lengths are used as component codes. Numerical results indicate that MSD is a sub-optimal decoding method of MLC, while PDL is most robust if block partitioning (BP) is used. For Ungerboeck partitioning (UP) and a mixed partitioning (MP) strategy, MSD is strongly recommended for the MLC system, while for the BP strategy, PDL is suggested as a simple decoding method compared with MSD.

It is well-known that multilevel coding (MLC) and multistage decoding (MSD) suffice to approach capacity if the rates at different levels are chosen appropriately. In most of the practical cases, however, the rate design rule for MSD does not leave any room for coding at higher levels of the MLC scheme, which is very important in fading environments. The rate design rule for multilevel coding using iterative multistage decoding is investigated, and it is shown that using iterative MSD with updated a priori probabilities of the constellation points, a broader subregion of the capacity region of the MLC scheme can be achieved.

Impulse radio (IR) is an ultra-wideband system with attractive features for baseband asynchronous multiple access (MA), multimedia services, and tactical wireless communications. Implemented with analog components, the continuous-time IRMA model utilizes pulse-position modulation (PPM) and random time-hopping codes to alleviate multipath effects and suppress multiuser interference (MUI). We introduce a novel continuous-time multiple input multiple output (MIMO) PPM-IRMA scheme, and derive its discrete-time equivalent model. Relying on a time-division-duplex access protocol and orthogonal user codes, we design composite linear and non-linear receivers for the downlink. The linear step eliminates MUI deterministically and accounts for frequency-selective multipath, while a maximum likelihood (ML) receiver performs symbol detection.

The problem of identifying the optimum adaptive channel code rate that achieves a target error performance in a wireless precoded link operating over slowly varying channels is addressed. It is found that pragmatic trellis coded modulation (PTCM) with adaptive QAM constellation is a natural fit to the problem at hand. It supports variable coding rates while providing decoder simplicity. Moreover, it enables the efficient exploitation of the unique features of a precoded system. The article also describes a simple technique for fast code rate adaptation based on channel estimation algorithms that combine the use of intra-frame and inter-frame physical layer information. As a consequence of the implementation of these adaptive techniques, a significant increase in data throughput is achieved, as verified in simulations.

A multicarrier QAM modulator for the wideband code division multiple access (WCDMA) basestation has been designed. The multicarrier modulator performs pulse shaping filtering for four baseband I and Q data streams. The filtered data is interpolated in three stages each interpolating with a factor of two. The modulation of four independent carriers is performed with the numerically controlled oscillators (NCO) which are based on the CORDIC vector rotation algorithm. The multi-carrier output is formed by summation of the modulated carriers. The SINC-attenuation effect of the D/A-converter is canceled by an inverse-SINC predistortion filter. The goal of the design process was to make the performance of the modulator limited by the 14-bit D/A-converter which can be considered as the state of the art available at IF frequencies.

This paper presents a new scheme of hybrid concatenated TCM (HCTCM) encoder and the iterative decoder for application to a wideband DS-CDMA system. Simulation results show that HCTCM can achieve better BER performance than turbo code /QPSK with the similar complexity. The influence of the constituent codes and decoding complexity on the BER performance is also investigated.

A new scheme termed orthogonal code division multiplexing (OCDM) is proposed for digital subscriber line (DSL) applications. Through the use of serial to parallel conversion and orthogonal codes, a "spreading gain" is achieved against narrowband interference without expanding the required transmission bandwidth of the information signal. Groups of orthogonal codes with different spreading gains and bandlimited (chip) filtering are used together with M-PAM data modulation. Spectral matching (to input power density that achieves the capacity of the copper cable channel) is performed followed by throughput optimization under a symbol error rate (SER) constraint in order to select the system parameters. The OCDM/DSL system performance is evaluated for several scenarios of interest.
