Summary form only given. Under Rayleigh flat-fading conditions, it is well-known by now that the capacity of a multiple-antenna wireless link increases linearly with the smaller of the number of transmit or receive antennas, with no increase in bandwidth or transmitted power. This phenomenon was verified experimentally with a scheme called BLAST (Bell Labs Layered Space Time). BLAST requires that the receiver learn the matrix of propagation coefficients. Our current research goal is to realize a high throughput in mobile environments where it may not be feasible to estimate the propagation matrix. A new signalling scheme, unitary space-time modulation, is nearly ideal for this task. We have developed some effective ways to design constellations of these signals. Where a user has extended access to the channel, a variation called differential unitary space-time modulation can be particularly convenient. Moreover space-time signals can function as their own channel codes, with spatial diversity replacing temporal diversity, an effect that we call space-time autocoding. This effect, which may obviate the conventional Shannon requirement to perform channel coding over many independent fades, can benefit differential unitary space-time modulation, as well as schemes where a user has access to the channel for only a short period. For example, within a single coherence interval of 16 symbols, for 7 transmit antennas, 4 receive antennas, and an 18 dB expected SNR, a total of 80 bits (rate 5) can theoretically be transmitted with a block probability of error less than 10/sup -9/, all without any training or knowledge of the propagation matrix.

Based on [1,2,3], a novel criterion, the "capacity rule" and "mapping strategy", for the design of optimal MLC schemes over AWGN channels is proposed. According to this theory, the performance of multilevel coding with multistage decoding schemes (MLC/MSD) in AWGN channels is investigated, in which BCH codes are chosen as component codes, and three mapping strategies with 8ASK modulation are used. Numerical results indicate that when code rates of component codes in the MLC scheme are designed based on "capacity rule", the performance of the system with UP is optimum for AWGN fading channels.

A WLAN standard, called HIPERLAN/2 (H/2), is currently defined in the ETSI/BRAN project. The standard can provide wireless access to several fixed networks with high data rate (up to 54 Mbps) in 5 GHz frequency range. To guarantee robustness in various types of radio channels a selective repeat ARQ with partial bitmap SRPB has been adopted as an error control mode. The SRPB ARQ mechanism was selected due to efficient retransmissions and low overhead of ARQ acknowledgements. The dynamic assignment ARQ acknowledgement opportunities integrated in SRPB can reduce the delay of acknowledgements and enhance the throughput. In this paper we describe the SRPB ARQ mechanism in H/2 and show the simulated performance.

Reduced-state sequence estimation (RSSE) is a suboptimal modification of the Viterbi algorithm (VA) which reduces the computational complexity of maximum likelihood sequence estimation. However, the maximum achievable throughput of RSSE may be significantly lower than the VA, as in addition to the add-compare-select function the critical path comprises branch metric computation, survivor memory operations, and decision-feedback calculation, This paper shows that precomputation of branch metrics can shorten the critical path of RSSE such that its delay becomes of the same order as the VA.

We first propose a new interlayer synchronization scheme for data partitioned video streams. Unlike conventional schemes, synchronization information is represented as bit position differences between layers and placed in the first layer, which is transmitted via a better channel. Based on data partitioning we design an adaptive transmission scheme where the source code rate, channel code rate and modulation schemes are changed in an optimal way in response to varying channel conditions.

In this paper, a frame synchronization method for the bi-orthogonal modulation system is proposed. The bi-orthogonal modulation system is an attractive system because the bit error rate (BER) performance improves as the number of sequences, which is employed in the system, increases under an additive white gaussian noise environment. Frame synchronization of the bi-orthogonal modulation system is difficult, however, because the bi-orthogonal modulation system uses several sequences for data transmission. In this paper, we show a frame synchronization system that utilizes two different inner sequences. This system enables the receiver to extract the frame timing from the received signal by using the conventional delay lock loop in total independence from the transmitted sequence. In this paper, we analyze the tracking performance of the proposed frame synchronization system. Moreover, the BER performance considering the tracking performance is investigated. As the result, it is found that there is a trade-off between the BER performance and the tracking performance. Furthermore, it is shown that the BER performance of the proposed system is better than that of binary phase shift keying by 1 [dB] at 10/sup -5/ BER.

According to the "capacity rule", the performance of multilevel coding (MLC) schemes with 8ASK modulation and three set partitioning strategies over AWGN channels is investigated. Two different decoding methods, which are multistage decoding (MSD) and parallel decoding on level (PDL), are used. In each scheme BCH codes with code lengths of 127 are used as component codes. Numerical results indicate that MSD is a sub-optimal decoding method of MLC for AWGN channels. For Ungerboeck partitioning (UP) and mixed partitioning (MP), the MSD method is strongly recommended to use for the MLC system, while for block partitioning (BP), PDL is suggested to use as a simple decoding method compared with MSD.

The effect of a specific set of assigned Walsh functions and the resulting variation in the amplitude, specifically the peak-to-average ratio of the amplitude of the transmit waveform from a base station in a cdma2000 system is studied. An easily implementable algorithm for optimally assigning the Walsh functions, with the objective of minimizing the peak-to-average ratio of the amplitude of the transmit waveform in an operating cdma2000 system is proposed. The use of orthogonal signals as an alternative to the Walsh functions is also considered with respect to the resulting variation in the peak-to-average ratio of the transmitted waveform.

We present a formula to calculate the bit error rate (BER) of maximum-distance-separable (MDS) codes based on the weight distributions of the codes. Because of the exact number of a certain weight of the codes, the probabilities of decoding error and decoding failure can be achieved for an incomplete decoder. The proposed formula is built by summing up all the probabilities of decoding error and decoding failure properly. Two MDS codes, RS (7,5) and RS (63,45) codes, with a 8PSK modulation scheme in the AWGN channel are chosen to verify the formula. Compared with the conventional upper bound formula, our proposed formula is more consistent with the simulated results, no matter short codes or long codes. The formula can be used widely to calculate the accurate BER of MDS codes.

We investigate the application of the sum-product algorithm to the decoding of a q-ary block-coded modulation (BCM) scheme which is based on extending the parity check equations of a binary block code to q-ary symbols. This is achieved by decomposing the code into a sub-code with an acyclic Tanner graph and its cosets which are represented by a trellis diagram. The combination of these two cycle-free graphs are used to develop an efficient soft output decoding algorithm for the given code.
