The paper presents new power and bandwidth efficient coding schemes that combine turbo codes with M-QAM modulation for fading channels. In the encoder, each group of information bits is associated with its parity check symbol which is alternately obtained from the first and second turbo component encoders. The coded digits of the two encoders are mapped to the in-phase and quadrature components of a modulation signal constellation separately. In the decoder, iterative decoding with symbol-by-symbol MAP algorithm can be employed. Using this approach, code schemes for bandwidth efficiencies of 2, 3 and 4 bits/s/Hz with M-QAM modulation are investigated. The simulation results show that the new schemes have superior performance to the known codes for the same bandwidth efficiency and interleaver size.

Adaptive signaling techniques can be used to more-efficiently utilize system resources in wireless communication systems. We have previously shown that adaptive signaling with non-uniform M-ary phase-shift-keying can improve the throughput in a CDMA wireless communication system. This additional throughput can be used to include a second multimedia message, called an additional message, along with the standard message that would be transmitted without the use of adaptive signaling. The schemes that we have investigated adapt the spacing of points in the signal constellation and the code rate and signaling rate for the additional message. Techniques that employ only adaptation of the code rates for both messages have also been suggested to achieve this same goal. In this paper we analyze the effects of imperfect channel estimates on the performance of adaptive signaling schemes that use nonuniform signaling and schemes that adapt only the code rate. The results show that, in a variety of situations, the nonuniform signaling schemes provide a higher throughput than the schemes that use uniform constellations. We also analyze the effect of using code-combining automatic repeat request (ARQ) with these adaptive techniques.

Motivated by the emergence of programmable radios, we seek to understand a new class of communication system where pairs of transmitters and receivers can adapt their modulation/demodulation method in the presence of interference to achieve better performance. Using the signal to interference ratio as a metric and a general signal space approach, we present a class of iterative distributed algorithms for synchronous systems which results in an ensemble of optimal waveforms for multiple users connected to a common receiver (or co-located independent receivers). That is, the waveform ensemble meets the Welch (1974) bound with equality and therefore achieves minimum average interference over the ensemble of signature waveforms. We describe fixed points for a number of scenarios.

A new and efficient class of nonlinear equalizers is introduced for intersymbol interference (ISI) channels. These "iterated-decision equalizers" use an optimized multipass algorithm to successively cancel ISI from a block of received data and generate symbol decisions whose reliability increases monotonically with each iteration. Asymptotically they achieve the performance of maximum-likelihood sequence detection (MLSD), but only have a computational complexity on the order of a linear equalizer (LE). And because their structure allows cancellation of both pre- and post-cursor ISI, iterated-decision equalizers outperform the minimum mean-square error decision-feedback equalizer (DFE) by 2.5 dB on severe ISI channels even with uncoded systems. Even more importantly, unlike the DFE, iterated-decision equalizers can be readily used in conjunction with error-control coding, making them attractive for a wealth of applications.

This paper presents an efficient and fast encoding of still images using the feedforward neural network technique for codebook search. The image to be coded is first clustered into a small subset of neighboring images and then the neural network-based encoder is used to find the best matching code sequences in the codebook. This subset is then used as a candidate set and an exhaustive search is then performed within this subset to find an optimal code sequence which minimizes the perceptual error between coded and decoded images. In this work, a generic codebook is developed using non-causal differential pulse coded modulation (DPCM) with residual mean removal and vector quantization using Linde, Buzo and Gray (1980) method. The codebook is analyzed to identify a pattern in the codebook. This pattern is used to train a neural network to obtain the approximate index of the pattern in the codebook. Then, an extensive search is done around this approximate position identified by the neural network to obtain the nearest neighbor of the pattern. Since the candidate set is usually much smaller that the whole code book, there is a substantial saving in codebook search time for coding an image as compared to the traditional method using full codebook search by the LBG algorithm.

The asynchronous mode W-CDMA system is known to be appropriate for the next generation mobile communication system, especially in a non-homogeneous cellular architecture. In this case, however, each base station needs to use a different spreading code for identification, so it is a demanding task for a mobile terminal to find the best cell site and get an accurate code synchronization at the beginning of a communication. Since slow acquisition of a base station could mean the failure of initiation, a fast algorithm to accelerate the cell search process is essential. In this paper, a new cell search algorithm based on the binary code position modulation (CPM) within a code block is proposed. Different cell sites are identified by different hopping code sequences, and each position modulation is performed by the hopping code. The proposed algorithm is proved to make the cell search time in most places in a cell much shorter than the previous algorithms, and to make the receiver implementation simpler.

We explore in this paper the lattice sphere packing representation of a multi-antenna system and the algebraic space-time (ST) codes. We apply the sphere decoding (SD) algorithm to the resulting lattice code. For the uncoded system, SD yields, with a small increase in complexity, a huge improvement over the well-known V-BLAST detection algorithm. SD of algebraic ST codes exploits the full diversity of the coded multi-antenna system, and makes the proposed scheme very appealing to take advantage of the richness of the multi-antenna environment. The fact that the SD does not depend on the constellation size, gives rise to systems with very high spectral efficiency, maximum likelihood (ML) performance, and low decoding complexity.

The previously proposed noncoherent sequence detection (NSD) algorithms have a performance which approaches that of coherent detectors and are robust to phase negligible performance loss in the presence of a frequency offset, provided this offset does not exceed an order of 1% of the signaling frequency. For higher values, the performance rapidly degrades. In this paper, two detection schemes are proposed, characterized by high robustness to frequency offsets and capable of tolerating offset values up to 10% of the signaling frequency. More generally, these detection schemes are very robust to rapidly varying phase and frequency instabilities. The general case of coded linear modulations is addressed, with explicit reference to M-ary phase shift keying (M-PSK) and quadrature amplitude modulation (M-QAM).
