Most receiver designs for asynchronous DS-CDMA systems exploit timing information to simultaneously detect the desired signal and suppress the multiple access interference (MAI). An ESPRIT delay estimation algorithm is proposed which required no initial information and no exhaustive search of the delays, the proposed estimators can thus be used for both acquisition and tracking. The estimate results have been compared to a previously derived approximation and simulation data. The new approach appears to provide improved accuracy.

In this paper we present a new method to estimate the radio mobile channel. The used technique is based on pilot symbols. Pilot symbols are introduced among the data frame. At reception the pilot symbols are projected on an orthonormal basis of polynomials which we call Schmidt polynomials (they are obtained with orthogonalization of Schmidt). Then an interpolation is done which gives the channel coefficient at each position in the frame. Compared to the classical method of channel estimation (based on the FFT) this method presents the same performance with less complexity.

Designing a limited word length fixed-point CDMA 2000-1X modem chip is essential for reduced die size and power consumption which leads to a cheaper and a higher performance handset. In this paper, we present the performance degradation due to the finite word length implementations of the pilot and traffic channels with various A/D quantizers for CDMA2000-1x mobile station (MS) demodulator. The performance results are also compared to that of a floating point implementation. The 4-bit, 5- bit and infinite resolution A/Ds are used in some simulation runs to compare their impact on performance. 4Viterbi decoder and a 4-bit turbo decoders are used in all the fixed point simulations. The frame error rate (FER) performance with 4- bit A/D with fixed-word length traffic and pilot symbols seems sufficiently close (maximum difference of 0.5 dB) to that of the floating point implementation.

This paper presents a new blind channel identification method for downlink multicarrier CDMA (MC-CDMA) systems. This technique uses subspace decomposition for channel identification and exploits the orthogonality property between the noise subspace and the received user codes to obtain a channel identification algorithm. It is shown that in order to increase the number of simultaneous users, and to still have a good estimation of the channel, a modification of the MC-CDMA system has to be considered by using codes larger than the spreading gain. The performance of this algorithm is analyzed by deriving a theoretical expression of the mean square error (MSE) estimation. This expression is compared with numerical results of some computer simulations to illustrate the validity of the analysis. The paper also introduces a linear detector for this environment.

An all-lag reference-code correlator generates an all-lag correlation vector at a rate equal to the rate of incoming data samples. Direct implementation of an all-lag reference-code correlator requires N parallel correlators, and the resultant degree of complexity is of the order N/sup 2/, where N is the length of the reference code. This paper derives a recursive form for the all-lag reference-code correlator. It is shown that the proposed recursive all-lag reference-code correlator can be implemented with a complexity approximately equal to that of a single parallel correlator. That is, the degree of complexity of the proposed recursive all-lag reference-code correlator is of the order N. Thus, substantial reduction in the implementation complexity is achieved.

We analyze the performance of a link adaptation scheme in which a user, based on his SIR estimate, either transmits using a given modulation and coding scheme or does not transmit (backs off). The impact of channel correlation on the optimal back off SIR threshold is studied for a co-channel interference limited cellular system. Expressions are derived for the average packet waiting time given the basic system parameters like packet arrival statistics, channel fade statistics, number of users per cell, and link adaptation thresholds. Analysis results are shown to be in good agreement with the simulation results. We show that the optimal back-off threshold crucially depends on the channel correlation, a fact not considered by the formulae suggested in literature for determining the link adaptation thresholds. For channel correlation /spl rho/=0.82, the back-off mechanism could reduce average packet delay by up to 15%, as compared to the no back-off case. No such improvement was found for /spl rho/=0.41.

We present a new block coding scheme for reduction of peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) of an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system. Since variation in signal amplitudes of an OFDM system is wide (i.e., large PAPR), performance of the system is significantly degraded by the nonlinearity of a high power amplifier (HPA) in the transmitter. In order to mitigate this distortion, we propose a block coding scheme which provides error correction capability, and also achieves the minimum PAPR for the OFDM system utilizing QPSK modulation and 4 subcarriers. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme significantly improves the bit error rate performance as compared to an uncoded system when an HPA is employed.

In this paper, we introduce a novel technique for multipath delay estimation in GPS receivers. The proposed technique is based on a nonlinear quadratic operator called the Teager-Kaiser operator. By applying directly the Teager-Kaiser operator to those correlation functions, we can easily estimate accurately the different multipath delays introduced by the channel. We examine closely the properties of this nonlinear operator when applied to different reference correlation functions, and we provide some simulations to confirm the high efficiency and simple implementation of this new technique.

A dedicated data collection system using CDMA technique for fixed stations is considered for monitoring city lifelines. Interference from a wireless LAN operating in the ISM band with the experimental CDMA system was studied. It was shown possible to measure the level of interference power from the wireless LAN using a TD-CDMA technique, while maintaining communication.

This paper presents the error performance of turbo coded TCM (TTCM) when applied to wideband code division multiple access (WCDMA) vehicular channels. The IMT2000 standard for third generation (3G) mobile systems proposes rate 1/3 turbo coding for data rates above 32 kb/s. Data rates up to 384 kb/s in vehicular environments and up to 2 Mb/s in indoor environments can be achieved either by reducing the spreading factor (SF) or by multicode operation (or by a combination of both). Multicode operation, however, increases the cochannel interference, which necessitates the use of complex multiuser interference cancellers in 3G systems. In this paper, we examine a turbo TCM scheme, which has the potential to offer much higher spectral efficiency when used in WCDMA systems. The proposed scheme is based on a punctured turbo TCM mapped to 8 PSK constellation. The error performance of such a scheme is examined in WCDMA channels using appropriate channel impulse response models for vehicular environments and the simulation results reported. Results show that the error performance of the scheme considered by us is 1.8-2.1 dB inferior to that of the rate-1/3 turbo coding scheme, however, the spectral efficiency is increased threefold, which is quite attractive for transmission at higher data rates.
