Frequency domain equalization has gained a lot of attention in the last decade, mainly pushed by the OFDM (orthogonal frequency division multiplexing) communication scheme. It has been adopted, in various flavours, for, among others, wireless LANs and xDSL. The technique is indeed leading to low complexity implementation, at the cost of a cyclic prefix, used to avoid inter block interference (IBI). The idea has been adapted to single carrier communication, almost "as is", yielding the same computational advantages and avoiding the high crest factor of OFDM. We name this scheme CP-SC (cyclic prefix-single carrier). We take a new look at this single carrier scheme, and, with a slight modification, show that the cyclic prefix can be implemented as a training sequence, and hence play two important roles: avoid IBI and help in synchronisation and channel estimation. The latter topic is of utter importance in fast fading situations (e.g. mobile). This new training aided frequency domain equalized single carrier (we name it TASC) scheme offers these advantages at the expense of only a small fraction of a dB (in terms of E/sub b//N/sub 0/). All these arguments make TASC an interesting candidate in situations where multipath and fast fading are present, while in other situations it has hardly no drawback compared to CP-SC.

An integratable transceiver architecture utilizing a new spread spectrum local oscillator technique is presented. In this type of transceiver architecture, the effects of two or more spread-spectrum oscillators combine to produce a desired "phantom" oscillator useful for frequency translation. The phantom oscillator technique is particularly applicable to the up-conversion and down-conversion paths in integrated transceivers, since spread-spectrum oscillator leakage does not create problematic DC offsets.

We present a technique to incorporate the knowledge of the transmit filter and the receive filter into the channel estimation process, when the spacing between the medium rays is shorter than the symbol duration. We use the EDGE (Enhanced Data rates for Global Evolution) air interface to evaluate the impact of this new channel estimation technique. For the EDGE air interface, we derive analytical expressions showing that the error in estimating the channel coefficients is reduced by incorporating side information in the estimation operation. Simulation results with the EDGE air interface (8PSK modulation) are presented, and these simulations show a 1 dB reduction in E/sub b//N/sub 0/ required to achieve 1% block error rate at coding rate of 0.76 (i.e. MCS-7 mode of EDGE).

The role of the interleaver in a bit-interleaved coded modulation (BICM) system is investigated. Square block interleavers and convolutional interleavers are compared to the random interleaver originally used by Zehavi (1992). It is shown that for short latencies (20 ms) the square block interleaver performs better than the random interleaver. However, when the side of the square block interleaver, /spl radic/N is a multiple of n, the coded bits are grouped in such a way that the diversity, and hence performance is reduced. For short delays, the convolutional interleaver outperforms both the random and square block interleaver as the vehicle speed varies from pedestrian to freeway speeds.

A direct sequence code division multiple access (DS-CDMA) multi-carrier system with minimum-shift-keying (MSK) modulation is proposed. Transmitted data bits are serial to parallel converted into M parallel streams. The bits on each stream are transmitted on S carriers with successively non-overlapping spectra using MSK modulation. Then the modulated streams are spread by a pseudo random (PN) code with a suitable chip rate. The resulting signal will have overlapping spectra. It is shown that the condition of single path fading for each carrier can be achieved by increasing the number of carriers and the separation between successive carriers. Also frequency diversity is achievable for the same bit transmitted on different carriers. The system is analyzed with one-bit differential detector in a static Rayleigh-fading multi-path channel. A simple formula for the probability of error is derived. MSK with one-bit differential detector has the advantage of simpler implementation than BPSK with CMF since the exact frequency and phase of the carrier are not required in the differential detector.

A generic M-ary continuous phase modulation (CPM) scheme, with a modulation index of h=1/M, can be modeled by a continuous-phase encoder (CPE) followed by a memoryless modulator (MM), where the CPE is linear over the ring of integers module M. By designing a channel encoder (CE), which is a convolutional encoder, to operate over the same ring of integers module M, the CE and the CPE can be combined to create another convolutional encoder called an extended CE. In this paper, a 1/2 rate CE over the ring of integers modulo 4 is combined with a 4-ary CPM scheme whose modulation index is h= 1/4 . Using this trellis coded modulation design, the paper explains the design of an effective serially concatenated channel coded system, where the inner encoder is the extended CE and the outer encoder is another convolutional encoder. Simulations show that good results are obtainable by concatenating an outer quaternary convolutional encoder with the quaternary extended CE.

This paper presents a low-complexity method of transmitting digitally compressed imagery through AWGN and fading channels. The proposed method combines a wavelet-based image coder that employs phase scrambling and trellis-coded quantization (TCQ), and source adaptive modulation (SAM). We present two versions of SAM that utilize BPSK (SAM-TCQ) and 16-ary PPM (OSAM-TCQ), respectively. We then compare the performance of the OSAM system to that of a system that utilizes unequal error protection (UEP). In our previous work, the SAM-TCQ system was shown to perform as well as UEP-TCQ at high bit error rates (BER), and within 1 dB of the UEP-TCQ system at low bit error rates. In this work, we show that the OSAM-TCQ system performs nearly 4 dB better than UEP-TCQ at high bit error rates, and the same as the UEP-TCQ system at low bit error rates, with much lower complexity than the UEP-based system.

Turbo-equalization has been proposed as a powerful means for recovering unknown symbols sent through frequency selective channels. Most algorithms proposed so far were designed in the framework of a binary symbol alphabet, and then extended to modulations with a larger number of states. Moreover symbol interleaving was mainly considered. This paper improves existing algorithms in that our algorithm (i) exhibits better performance when used with large constellations, and (ii) can be used in conjunction with bit interleaving and thus applies to bit interleaved coded modulations (BICM), which are now frequently used in wireless transmissions. Two variants of the algorithms are presented, namely a turbo-equalizer and a turbo-canceler.

Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) has some technical advantages compared with single carrier transmission in high data rate applications and multipath fading channels. Differential modulation techniques are used in combination with OFDM to avoid any effort for channel estimation and equalization in the receiver. In this paper, the combination of differential modulation and convolutional channel coding is re-interpreted as a concatenated code in which the differential modulation scheme is the rate R=1 inner code and the convolutional code the outer code. Turbo decoding is applied in this case at the receiver resulting in a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) gain of more than 3.5 dB compared with classical soft decision Viterbi decoding.
