Multilevel coding (MLC) schemes based on channel capacity with multistage decoding (MSD) and parallel decoding on levels (PDL) are considered and compared. The channel models AWGN and Rayleigh fading are used in order to study the performance of MLC systems under different conditions. The investigation is done for 8ASK modulation and three set partitioning strategies. In each scheme BCH codes with different code lengths are used as component codes. Numerical results indicate that MSD is a sub-optimal decoding method of MLC for both channels, while PDL is most robust to varying channels if block partitioning (BP) is used. For Ungerboeck partitioning (UP) and mixed partitioning (MP) strategy, the MSD method is strongly recommended to use for the MLC system, while for the BP strategy, PDL is suggested to use as a simple decoding method compared with MSD.

Various studies have shown that adaptive antenna array techniques are good one to cancel multipath and multiuser interference. However, many of them need training signals to estimate the desired signal or have heavy complexity to compute the algorithmic processing. An antenna array receiver in a direct sequence/code division multiple access (DS/CDMA) system with M-ary orthogonal modulation is proposed. At every antenna element a channel estimation technique is used, which refers to the maximum correlator output of a RAKE receiver. The estimated channel coefficients enable the signal to be detected coherently with no need of training signals. Moreover, the antenna weights, which are determined by the estimated channel coefficients, make it possible to focus the receiver on the desired signal and to suppress the interference signal. Consequently, the proposed receiver has a 2D (dimensions) RAKE structure which can exploit both spatial diversity and temporal diversity. Simulation results show that the performance of the proposed scheme improves 1.5 dB in E/sub b//N/sub 0/ at a BER=10/sup -3/ over the receiver of noncoherent detection. The results also show that at a BER=10/sup -2/ the proposed receiver improves about 2.3 times and 3 times the system capacity with 3 and 5 antenna elements, respectively.

A key requirement for next generation CDMA systems is to provide a high bit rate packet data service and improved sector throughput for both low and high mobility applications. A 1.25 MHz DS-CDMA evolution called 1XTREME (Third Generation Enhanced modulation and Encoding) has been proposed. 1XTREME uses a forward shared channel (F-SHCH) that is shared by multiple packet data users and is capable of supporting peak rates of up to 5 Mbps, compared to third generation CDMA system indoor peak data rates of 460 kbps and 2 Mbps for IS-2000 and W-CDMA, respectively. In this paper the link performance of the F-SHCH is evaluated for different modulation and coding scheme (MCS) configurations. Based on the link results, the average sector throughput is presented for two simple scheduling algorithms, as well as performance as a function of the maximum allowed FER operating point.

We present a new modulation method, i.e., M-ary MC-CDMA system with quadrature spreading codes. In the transmitter, M-ary orthogonal modulation is applied to serial-to-parallel converted data bits. The modulated symbol is then spread in the frequency domain using each chip of complex orthogonal codes. Each spread symbol is then modulated on corresponding subcarrier, finally the multiple branches are combined and transmitted. Considering the frequency selective slowly fading, we investigate the system's downlink performance. Using equal gain combination (EGC) and maximum ratio combination (MRC), we study the effect of complex quadrature spreading codes on the system performance and compare it with that of the single spreading code case. Also we analyse the effect of the guard time on the system and compare it with that of no guard time.

Modulator development is an ongoing program at SLAC. The Stanford Linear Accelerator with its approximately 240 klystrons and modulators operates for 6000 plus hours a year. This operation gives SLAC an important insight into component and system reliability in the high voltage environment. The planned NLC is approximately 10 times the size of SLAC and the high voltage modulator klystron systems are one of the largest cost drivers. This paper contains a brief progress report on the optimized line modulator and touches on solid-state advances, which make solid-state, high-power pulse modulators the wave of the future. Klystron protection remains a critical issue along with modulator reliability, efficiency and cost. Configurations whereby multiple klystrons are paralleled on a single modulator may exacerbate the problem. The majority of this paper discusses tests at SLAC of klystron arcs on line-type modulators with single and double klystron loads. This talk may introduce and refer to other talks at this conference and other conferences by national and foreign laboratory collaborators and industry, specifically in relation to DOE SBIR programs.

This paper describes the work undertaken in Core 1 of the UK Mobile Virtual Centre for Excellence (MVCE) programme on resource management. MVCE Core 1 was a 56 man year project involving a collaboration of 7 UK universities and 24 companies. The work involved the design of a flexible resource management system which can be used in diverse mobile systems involving multiple standards, air interfaces, networks and operators.

Based on a capacity rule and block partitioning strategy, a robust multilevel coding (MLC) scheme is proposed for AWGN and Rayleigh fading channels. Punctured convolutional codes using soft or hard decision Viterbi decoding are selected as component codes. The considerable performance gains over the uncoded 4ASK system are demonstrated by computer simulation and the results can present some references for the optimum criterion of multilevel coding design.

Multimedia applications are driving the mobile and fixed wireless networks of the future toward supporting data bearing services. However, in a wireless environment, especially those involving mobile terminals, the communication environment is changing continuously. Under the conventional system design paradigm, the setting of modulation, spreading, and coding/interleaving parameters is usually fixed and made a priori. Because the channel conditions can change continuously over a wide range of conditions, the effectiveness of a combined spreading, coding, and modulation strategy is less than optimal for many cases. We present the development of MASSCoM, a multi-adaptive spread spectrum coding and modulation protocol in which channel measurements are employed to adapt the frequency hopping spreading strategy, the modulation options, and the coding scheme to maximize throughput while maintaining target BER performance goals.

Transmission of information over the mobile radio channel is of a growing interest for the mobile telecommunications systems. By considering the nature of services that will be broadcast, systems have to work at high data rates. These rates can be reached by the use of coding schemes working at high spectral efficiencies and low complexity. In this paper, we present comparisons between trellis coded modulation, bit-interleaved coded modulation and block coded modulation over a correlated Rayleigh fading channel. The 16-QAM modulation is used in order to find a compromise between spectral efficiency and complexity. The results are shown as a function of the interleaving depth versus the channel coherence time and in terms of measured data flow, giving a rough approximation about the decoding complexity.
